Luke Flegg is behind the camera (again), and he did say it isn't truly a one-shot, but close. There are a couple of spots, such as getting into the car, where he spliced together as best as he could for a one-shot feel. BTW, this video continues with Animal Flow. @@itsjonhiller There were at least 3 cuts, maybe 4. Maybe coming in the window. Definitely coming out the front door, into the car and out of the car. Coming out of the car is the most obvious because there's a white car to the right of the shot outside that isn't there when shot from inside. Not to detract from the work and a lot of Ren's videos are continuous shots.
@@kylefrandsen2665pretty sure Luke confirmed in the comments on Joe E Sparks reaction that there are 2 cuts, going in and out of the car. The rest is one shot. I was sure they’d done the in and out of the car and that window shot by passing off the camera between people (I had it all worked out in my head how it could be done that way) - but no, Luke said it has 2 cuts (and you can see the white car appear as he splices the shots from inside and outside the car together as the camera leaves, and I think I can see the drivers hand move slightly on the transition into the car but I might be imagining that) and going into the window was done with him backing in.

Ren has said he has something special lined up for his next big release. The budget for the video is over £1000 for the first time. People speculate on themes like the masks, or using the same settings, I wonder if its just value for money and making the best of what there is. I believe that is his flat, the Bongo Bong video was filmed on that roof. The room used for Sick Boi and Hi Ren is his the basement of the building.
That flat was his home that he shared with Romain and the Big Push practiced there. Ren has a tour of it from three years ago on his channel. I don't know if he still has that apartment.

@jonathanhiller_ it's amazing, think it's a great choice for you. There's a video that has then entire trilogy together. That's definitely the way to watch it.
First time I've seen one of your reactions, loved the filmmaker expert insight! I've just searched your Ren reactions and look forward to catching up with those. Unless I missed it, the Tales of Jenny Screech Violet full version is an absolute must! All 1 takes you feel like you've been dropped into the plot!
Definitely think you'd enjoy/ appreciate the tale of Jenny and Screech. This is the complete version which is recommended: ua-cam.com/video/TYAnqQ--KX0/v-deo.html
I have a strong feeling that you missed that while the focus was still in the car after Ren got out, the focus was actually on the rear view mirror, where there was a great frame of the driver's face before the focus shifted forward and back to Ren. It's a _really_ cool shot.
agree camera was on the mirror, then dropped to allow driver to get out first ,then camera operator was able to get out and see the driver at the rear..
Thanks for the insights! Three (edit: probably four) cuts for this one I believe, (through the bedroom window), through the front door and then into and out of the car, but all very nicely done by the cameraman, Luke Flegg. I also liked the little touches like the focus on the pigman's eyes in the rear-view mirror. I really admire what Ren can do creatively with such a small budget and a few talented friends.
@@richardhuff1256 Yep I reckon the bedroom window could be uncut too (super smooth either way), but there is a cut when he comes out of the front door of the building - his cuffs change, his hair's a bit different and the sun is now shining.
Pretty sure that every time the camera passes through a door or window there is a cut. The last 3 are easy to verify as mentioned above. I think the first window would have been too difficult for cameraman to climb through backwards without wobbling the camera, plus Ren would have had to adjust his wardrobe and get those boxing gloves off really quickly to make that entrance on point.
Welcome back, you have been missed! this was great. I do hope that one day soon you will be able to do the Tales (full version). The filmmaking on these 3 videos is just amazing.
@@itsjonhiller Theirs's one cut that does stand out upon further review, that's when the camera exits the car window. If you carefully take notice, before the camera exits there is no white car parked on the side of the street but once the camera exits window the white car is suddenly there. This "mistake" can be attributed to Ren's low budget gorilla filming of course, due to not having physical control of the filming location. Still, even with this minor continuity problem the editor did an admirable job in disguising it.
All of Ren's videos seem to be so artistic; even this one with the black & white to color, the colors & 'props' used, the driver wearing the pig mask. Love it all. You probably know this by now, but it was chloroform he poured into the rag. Welcome back by the way!
Great reaction Jonathan. Luke added some more info about this shoot in comments to another reactor. Here they are verbatim: "Ha every time you said 'handing off' I was like "I wish" It was only me on camera the whole time - kinda wish I showed the empty back seats though Fun fact, because I was such a stubborn bastad about getting those 'float through the window' shots, we had to do a second day of takes before we finally nailed it. Shout out as well to our champ running alongside us (including alongside the car) with the speaker playing the tune for timing the lip sync So we actually had to hide a cut going in and out of the car because it was just me on camera and also shooting in a moving car with really specific camera movements and focus..I didn't know anyone who could do it the way I wanted, so I just had to end the first shot be leaning as far into the car as I could with the camera. Then cut and open the door, sit in the car. Then hold camera out of the car window as far as I can and record as I bring it in again, starting the next shot. Hardest thing was to 99% match the overlapping shots in that moment it goes through the window: angle, composition, etc. So there's a freeze frame where the inside of the car is a different shot to the outside of the car So we've hidden a couple of cuts because there wasn't anyone else to hand who I was comfortable doing the shots in the car (Can be quite tricky filming in a moving car; focus, composition, movements, keeping yourself out the rear view mirror..) So the first shot finishes with me putting my camera through the window and leaning inside the car as far as I can. Then cut. Open door and sit in car. Then I lean out the window as far as I can with the camera, hit record and the hardest bit is to try and exactly match the angle and composition speed and movement as I bring the camera back in through the window, because it has to pretty perfectly overlap so we can achieve the effect. So there's a freeze frame when the camera is half inside the car - the inside of the car is one shot and the outside of the car (the street) is a different shot. If they move or wobble differently, it's super obvious that it's too different shots in the same frame. It wasn't perfect but think it just about works!"
Hey! Jonathan. Interesting how at 7:20 you mentioned that as Ren left the car, the focus did not remain on him. I actually wonder if you noticed that the focus was 100% on the rear-view mirror. I'll leave it to you to see what treat lay in store ...

Love you broke down the thirds and maybe sixes in another vid... Sick Boi? Peace and Love my Friend. Jenny and Screetch... the acoustics and setting is EVERYTHING. Back on 74 is a fav also... they had 2 hours to shoot. Run the Renegade train. His crew is phenomenal.
Loving your breakdown of Ren’s videos! I really do hope to see your thoughts on the tales of Jenny and Screech (and Violet). But also really want to see your thoughts on Money Game part 1 and 3. (Part 2 has an awesome lyric video. There is a live version but it’s not the full song.) But part 3 is the first video they were actually able to spend some money on. Would love your thoughts on how it compares to his other videos.

7:52 - Chloroform. Were it ether, in the car, they'd both have passed out already. (Obviously it's not really chloroform either, they'd all have migraines by the end of a shot.)
Im in love with your videos and really appreciate your work. It gives people like me a very good input about cameras and filming. Plus your taste of music is 100% my taste, too. Keep up the great work :)
Been missing your analyses lately! I'm surprised you didn't comment on the backseat shot after Ren gets out of the car where cameraman shows Pig in the rearview mirror while still staying out of the shot, then moves forward to focus on the action with Ren while Pig has very stealthily exited the vehicle and closed his door again. Also, I think there may be at LEAST 3 camera people shooting this (just my own theory)... the two shots while entering and exiting the car are through the backseat *window* of the car without opening/closing the door, which means that there might be at least 3 camera people? Somehow they've all managed to stay out of the periphery shots and the reflections (bedroom, bathroom door sign, rearview mirror in car). Wild stuff!
Just one person with two sneaky cuts into and out of the car. 😊 Luke (the videographer on this one) said he wasn't happy with the way the transition looked, so he forced them to do a second day of shooting so he could get shots the way he wanted.
@icyravens well hell... I was giving it the benefit of the doubt on the single-take, though I had the same question about the transition from the building to the street. Still very smooth all the way through though. Thanks for the info :)
When Ren was getting out of the car and walking towards his victim, as you said it was out of focus that was because they were trying to get your focus on the lights above the tear view mirror in which a sliding glimpse of the pig’s eyes who was now sitting in the back seat!
This one wasn't a one take you can see that when the camera leaves the car and there is a white car there that wasn't before but awesome video from you and Ren. I love your reactions.
It definitely wasn’t a one take. You can tell when we’re inside the car and the camera transitions out of the window. A car suddenly appears and is parked where there wasn’t one before.
The first time I watched his video I was focused on Ren walking down the street I missed them focusing on the pigs eyes in the rearview mirror of the car
I wish someone would explain how the camera made such a smooth transition from inside car to outside. FYI the guy in the trunk is the guy tied up in animal flow
Nope, see Luke Flegg's comments on Joe E. Sparks' reaction. Handoff was reactor speculation; Luke confirmed he was the sole camera operator on this one.
It’s a few years old now. But it would be fantastic to see you check out songs from Bo Burnham’s Inside special. Extremely thought provoking and existentially creative, similar to Ren. He wrote, filmed, directed and edited the entire special by himself during lock down. So it would be interesting to hear your thoughts on the filmmaking.
Awesome reaction. A good Ren video to do from a filmography perspective would be losing it. Interesting lense choices plus framing and perspective. I appreciate your intelligent breakdowns.
Hey I just found your channel, this was Knox Hill level breakdown but of the videography/filming instead of bars/music. . Neato. I’ll check out your other reactions.
Hi Jonathan. I would love to hear your reaction/review of Ren's new video "Money Game 3." They had a bigger budget for the video and I think the production values are better. .
Silly me; I was thinking that this video was so simple that you wouldn't have much to say. The videographer on Murderer replied to one or two reactions that I saw and he did share a little info, but I enjoy learning from you what's happening with the creation. You help me understand what it is about the videos that helps stimulate the feelings that I get from them. Thanks for this.
Yep - it was a very cleverly planned/executed 1-take fake! Most noticeable cut is near the end when the camera exits the car... before the frame of the BMW "gets in the way of the shot," the closest car parked in front of them on the right of the lane is a black car. After the camera clears the interference of the BMW, a white car is now parked closer to them than the initial black car.
You may also appreciate Jenny and Screech and Violet's tale. 3 x one shot trilogy of Ren and Sam's. Then follow up with Ren's latest, Money Game 2 for the icing on the cake! Enjoy, and please share your thoughts.
@ 7:39 I wanted you to tell us how the cameraman got out of the car without opening the door! Pretty interesting. Cheers. ---edit after watching back a few times i realised there's a white car that appears on the right all of a sudden....movie magic i guess.

live version is fantastic
React to Money Game part 3 please. It is a masterpiece in video art, basically a movie.
You will NOT regret it.
It is by far Ren's best video.
I would love to see your reaction on Rens Money Game Part 3, please! 🙏🏼
Nice reaction! First one Iv seen of yours, gonna subscribe and check some more out. Love Ren 🖤
Tell a lie, it’s not the first Iv seen and I’m already subscribed 😂😂 I’m old, Iv been at work all night stop picking on me 😝
7:52 - Chloroform.
Great reaction! Appreciate your insights ❤
😊 Luke (the videographer on this one) said he wasn't happy with the way the transition looked, so he forced them to do a second day of shooting so he could get shots the way he wanted.
fascinating! thanks for the analysis!
I love your reactions.
ahhh thanks for the detail!
Ren❤❤❤❤
That transition in and out of the car though
It definitely wasn’t a one take. You can tell when we’re inside the car and the camera transitions out of the window. A car suddenly appears and is parked where there wasn’t one before.
so good! thanks for the deal.
Really brilliant insights great to watch, your videos look great. 👍
How have you not done The Tales of Jenny and Screech yet??!!
Really loving your videos!
Have you reacted to The Tale of Jenny and Screech yet? I'd love to hear your breakdown of all three parts!
The first time I watched his video I was focused on Ren walking down the street I missed them focusing on the pigs eyes in the rearview mirror of the car
I wish someone would explain how the camera made such a smooth transition from inside car to outside. FYI the guy in the trunk is the guy tied up in animal flow
Love this
can you confirm that there are two camera persons that the camara is handed off to from outside to inside the car and reverse back out.
The reflection of the pig face in the rearview mirror while Ren is abducting the guy is just so cool!
Hey I just found your channel, this was Knox Hill level breakdown but of the videography/filming instead of bars/music. . Neato. I’ll check out your other reactions.
Hi Jonathan. I would love to hear your reaction/review of Ren's new video "Money Game 3." They had a bigger budget for the video and I think the production values are better. .
Yeah, you would love the Tales of Jenny and Screech trilogy. Each are entirely live and one-shot. subscribing for your insight when you do.
Try the "Murderer", live Acustic by Ren. Is same song, with a totally different feel. Also a very creative video for being live.
If you want to see some brilliant camera work on some of his videos check out "Losing it" and "the tale of Janny and Screech"
REN!
Thanks for this.
so glad you appreciated it!
The kidnap victim is the prisoner in the apartment in Animal Flow. Its all connected!
no way! this is awesome
It's two cuts in this video. One entering the vehicle and one leaving it.
🤓🇸🇪
ahhh nice!
The victim in this video ends up tied up to a rack in Animal Flow with the pig as minder.
Ren said this was filmed BEFORE HI REN which is kinda nuts and Ren also might invite you to his twitch to talk, I recommend you to him....
fascinating..
Money game 1 would be great for you to react to, also Crutch-amazing video's.
@ 7:39 I wanted you to tell us how the cameraman got out of the car without opening the door! Pretty interesting. Cheers.
---edit after watching back a few times i realised there's a white car that appears on the right all of a sudden....movie magic i guess.
2nd camera guy?
@@kingofshit303 pretty sure there is a cut
