    Ever since I was a kid I've always made sure I have a Victorinox . Got my first one in the 80s, and now I have several. I put one in my haversack, another in my first aid kit, etc, etc. You always want a larger knife, too - but these little fellas are so handy. I prefer them over a Leatherman 100%

      Oak Knob Farm So you watched McGyver too, huh? ;-) No worries, that was the exact reason I carried a SAK ever since. If I don’t have one on me I feel naked...

      @@dutchbachelor My aunt from Germany presented a SAK to my mom when I was young and it was the first time I saw one and instantly fascinated. Macgyver came later and people started to call SAK “McGyver knife" and it hurt me. I enjoyed the show but I hate it when people talk of McGyver whenever they see multitools. You don’t call duck tape “McGyver tape” or paper clips “McGyver clips”

      @dutchbachelor 3 роки тому

      @@mingshey Ehm, I did not call it McGyver knife. Wouldn't dream of it. I said it was the first time I saw one and it made me want one. That show probably sold more knives then any marketing campaign ever could and is still selling them to people all over the world, whether you like it or not. I was six years old when I saw the show, I kept bugging my parents until I got my first when I was 9. And for me it's either a pocket knife, a SAK or a Victorinox.

    Thanks for bringing this tool to our attention. The Victorinox Farmer has been my wilderness carry pocket knife for a long time. I did see this Farmer X hit the market yesterday. I wish Victorinox could sort out how place the tweezers & toothpick in the Alox versions. Not mandatory additions, but nice to have extras, especially if you replace one with the FireFly ferro rod. But carrying it in a belt pouch resolves that.

    Be still oh beating heart. They finally made it, my idea of the perfect Victorinox. Those scissors have been trimming my nails exclusively for 10 plus years. They have stayed incredibly sharp, and I only touched them up with a pocket stone once about 3 years ago. A year ago I wore the spring out and it broke so I bought a new spring. Thanks for the heads up 👍

    I’m using the scissors in victorinox swisschamp for more than 25 years mainly for clipping fingernails and it is still as sharp as new. The self-sharpening feature seems to keep it that way. I don’t do my toenails with it (use clippers) so it’s just fingernails and it the fingernail thickness and hardness differs from person to person so it’s not a guarantee, but at the least I can say the scissors will last very long as far as you don’t put extreme jobs on it.

    I have that without the scissors. It’s my daily driver and I absolutely love it. I’ve never understood putting scissors on a SWAK, but, to each their own. For Fist aid I use First aid shears because SWAK scissors can’t cut clothing like denim. I know I’m in the minority, I’m not trying to convince anyone they are wrong for wanting this. I’m just pointing out that there are other versions for those that don’t need scissors.

      Alex Paulk Or, one could take a file to the front end of the screwdriver/bottle opener to square off the edges. This way when you scrape the ferro rod the pressure is in the direction the tool will support with it’s spring, not in the direction that may force it close back into the handle. Always there, always ready, no danger, simple one time modification.

      On the Pioneer range of knives you can just use the sharp edge of the awl. Works great. Something even better is to grind an edge on the inside curve of the cap lifter. All Victorinox knives before about 1980 came from the factory this way. This gives you more surface on the ferro rod.

    Victorinox scissors are also amazing for first aid. The blades meet perfectly from the base to the tip and I've found that to be super important for dressing wounds, cutting gauze, cutting skin, cutting thread for stitches right up next to the injury, etc. ESPECIALLY nice for one handed if you're operating on yourself.

    Love it but think I'll be sticking with my one handed trekker for now considering I'm left handed and keep my finger nails cut extremely short. I would have bought the X if I'd known about it when I bought the Farmer. Instead I teamed it up with a Gerber Dime. A good small woods tool set but Victorinox scissors are better. The Gerber scissors require a knack and knacks disappear when it's belting down cold rain, your hands are swelling with the wet and cold and you need to get the shelter up in failing light. The Farmers fantastic its the best parts of my most used Victorinox (Camper and German Army knife) in one knife.

      The Army 7 looks great. Having said that I like the fact that the flat driver on the end of the can opener serves as a PH2 driver, provided that it's not a recessed screw. Also here in the UK not all cans have ringpulls and it would be a pain in the ass to open one of those without a can opener.

  • @garygoldstein327
    @garygoldstein327 3 роки тому

    Between the can opener and the screw driver is a space to add a tiny wafer thin neodium magnet.
    Great for magnetizing screws, bits, and picking up lost magneitic metals burried in leaves.
    I lost a screw between the radiator and the grille and tied a shoe lace through the folding knife's lanyard ring and opened the screw driver and placed the magnet on the fold out screw driver to lower the knife body to retrieve the screw.

    I own several SAKs, the Alox are the best,and this one will definitely be a huge success,its really the perfect Sak we never had.For people comparing it to fieldmaster and other medium size Victorinox models, i get it, but you re just wrong.First off,the alox series are more robust and strong, the tools are snappier, the knife blade is thicker and stronger,they are slightly bigger(93mm), and the reamer well, the alox reamer is just the best there is for many reasons. I love my farmer but i always wished it had scissors as well, and now i can have it, its great.What i would really love though is for them to offer it in various colours from the start, but i guess you cant have everything, i ill get the silver one and probably will get the coloured version as well (hope its green) when it gets released! Having that said, maybe in the future we ill see, dare i say, a 111 mm alox version?

    I love the Alox scales, but I am more tempted to get a minimalist Bantam (or Pioneer X) with them for urban EDC than for outdoor use. Currently looking at the Huntsman for this as the hook and corkscrew seem useful along with tweezers and toothpick (that you can swap out with a Firefly ferro rod, too). A slightly bigger alternative with a locking blade would be the Outrider, but it comes with less tools.

    IMHO the Alox-series is rather expensive compared to the plastic scale ones.
    I actually carry an Outrider- larger scale (115mm), locking blade, saw and scissors longer too - and most of all: I got a "Bosch"-merchandise one for 19,95€ - can't beat that, regular price is 57€ in the EU.
    If you're unlucky with plastic scales, just take them off and grind down the scale-holders.
    The Outrider comes with cork-screw, tweezers and tooth-pick too, you can replace the tooth-pick by a Tortoise Gear "firefly" and fill the corkscrew with Helix Tinder from Tortoise Gear, makes it a small survival-kit of it's own.

Now I need to either order a leather pocket slip for the 4 layer Farmer X or use a spare 2-3 layer 111mm slip that I already have, I tried a 3 layer Pioneer X in it & its not a very tight fit so I believe that the 111mm slip will expand enough to hold the Farmer X

    Do a search for "Swiss Army Knife", then click on the company's link and you'll find they have more models than you can shake a stick at. Not to mention colors. Some of them have a clock built in their side, or fold-out memory sticks you can stick into your computer. Some even have pens and small flashlights. They've come a long way over the years. I purchased my 1st SAK 50 years ago and it's still going strong, but it now has a couple of brothers. My recent purchase was the Woodsman.

    And here I thought that teethbrushes and qtips were the things folks don't think about in the longer term. Many to most folks carry a multi tool that has a file so nails are covered, sharpening stones work too, just slower.😁

    Nice knife. I just bought a Pioneer which is very similar to Swiss army's issue knife to troops. Thinner for my pocket, but it is really too big for my pocket. Saw and scissors nice add for pouch carry. I have a bigger version for that. And that has a huge saw that can be used with ferrous rod in closed position.

      RangerGrip is larger SAK I carry in a pouch. No scissors though. Like your XL. Wish for an additional smaller blade, clip point most likely on my pocket knife. I do most of my whittling with a small blade.

    Kinda like the field alternative to the urban Compact. Bantam Alox can disappear into the smallest pocket. Cadet adds another layer and multiplies the function. Farmer-X is about as heavy as I'd want to go for pocket carry. Anything more and I'd need a belt clip or pouch.

    There's another Swiss Army Knife called the "Camper" that is better.... more camping/bushcraft ready version of these tools.
    It comes with tweezers and a toothpick built into the plastic sheaths. One big and one small knife and a better awl in my opinion. It's slightly wider so you can drill wider. Plus it has the rest of the tools this knife has.
    As always a great video.

    Sharp looking and handy. How do you carry it? It looks too thick and uncomfortable for pocket carry and if I'm gonna carry a sheath I'd take a Leatherman, has everything that has and a stout pair of pliers with wire cutter. If I'm carrying a knife it's gotta have a pocket clip and one hand opening so it's ready to go in a hurry. I mostly carry the knife when I walk my dog to protect her and myself from other dogs. I did however pickup a Victorinox fieldmaster as my nephew's first knife and I have to say it's shave sharp and great quality for the price.

      @@kenkowalski5996 Agreed. The Ranger is a nice knife. But it suffers from having Cellidor scales, so without the preferred ALOX build it’s not nearly as robust as the ALOX series, the main blade is slimmer, it doesn’t have that heavy awl on the end where it should be, etc. There is indeed an ideal SAK out there among the many, many designs. Good thing I’m not picky. 😄

    Fun SAK fact: the tweezers in combination with the corkscrew on models so equipped are handy as an improvised roach clip at parties. Maybe you have to have gone to high school in the 70's to understand any of that. I should post a video...

    Congrats on discovering the awesome world of Victorinox! If you would like some wonderful tips for using it, like preventing the knife or saw from closing on you with a little string or creative use of the awl or the can opener, search for “Felix Immler” here on UA-cam.
