The clip you used was from 1995 when she was nearly 60. She originally released this song in 1969 - twenty six years earlier - yet nails every note like they were nothing. Thank you again for paying great respect to this amazing singer.

It was a sketch at a musical called mermaids and rascals. A third half-verse gives a happy twist. But it's a somber song, especially when these last lyrics are ommited.

High-powered thanks for mentioning that this was part of a movie.. was it inside of taverna? Where the women in the background were dressed like they were in mourning dancing all over the place.. and this young fellow in a traditional sailor's cap in very casual clothes meiming to her words. An halfway in the video he stoops very smoothly and rolls down in a few turns.. and then meets this blonde Greek woman very tall very beautiful famous singer. Has she introduces him to a very young woman where they're holding hands while the women in the back are waving around their veils while. dancing. Somebody says it's from 1969 I think this very thoughtful moderator should view that it's pretty theatrical and her voice is very powerful. This being clip with too much theatrical drumming a little too over the top.. but nevertheless her voice is powerful and poignant in this 1995 video thanks again moderator for viewing this I just wish you had the lyrics I wished I had the lyrics to understand. To learn the full meaning of her song. We really all all appreciate your reviewing this. I would like to hear your other reviews of other musics around the world thank you so much brother take care stay well

@@thepowerheadthanks again powerhead I appreciate you original movie video from 1969 do you know where we can get the lyrics of the songs it's hard I try my best.. what I can gather is she saying' just open the stone to hide her from the sun while she's in deep sadness. Do you think she's talking about a grave or a cave like where Jesus at the stone rolls after his crucifixion.. then she eventually says the mountains are covered in.. then she she either lost her man or the man. As a little tricky but hearing a beautiful dramatic voice is bone chilling.. thank you I hope this moderator use the video the original thanks so much take care brother take care

I'm a 14 year old from Greece and i listen to her since i was a toddler. It's been 5 years at least that she's my favourite singer of all time. Many Greeks when i said to them all these years that she's my favourite greek singer didn't believe me because today's children are out of control all over the world they listen usually to crap. But she's my idol. She's my inspiration for so so many years and she's talented. My wish to myself two years now is when I'll be 18 i will go and listen to her live. Just to be in the same place with her for once. To see my idol. Unfortunately she's having very very harsh moments because she had a blood stroke last night. I hope she's ok and recover and continue to show her perfection in my and the next generations. I am completely amazed for so many years now that she's an old woman but she's better than 90% at least from the artists today. Really an inspiration ❤️ I hope she recovers and returns to her lovely family ❤️. I wish her the best and deal with this. And i really really hope that my dream can come true. Thank you for the inspiration ❤️❤️ I wish you the best!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Love your videos man ! Your comments are so accurate and you look like you understand so much of Music!
Marinella is one of the best (probably the best) voices and drama singers of Greece. This song is a masterpiece of love betrayal. Music (Mimis Plessas) is perfect, lyrics (Lefteris Papadopoulos) are absolutely soul ripping and Marinella nailed it in almost every single performance she ever did! Pure diamond! In the comments i will put a performance couple years ago, where she is 84...!!!! Unbelievable!

The song was composed for a film. In the film there is a third verse, where she invites the girls to join the dance, for that man eventually came back to her. That song was added to the soundtrack in replacement to another song which she could not sing, allegedly due to a medical condition, and ended up becoming one of her greatest hits. Here is the film clip. ua-cam.com/video/CHOOZHlVSeo/v-deo.html

The other day I saw Hurt sung by Cash. Everyone was talking about what a sad, soulful song it was. It's kind of funny cause the majority of Greek music is like Hurt, while it's not common in American songs. I think it's because Greeks use music as a communal carthartic response to tragedy.

this song, just as most older greek songs, it has few lyrics, so these few lines have to carry meaning.
that's why i wanted to give a little analysis here for anyone interested
firstly, there's context behind the open stone part lol
there's this greek saying that goes along the lines of "i want for the earth to open up and shallow me" and we say it as a hyperbole for when we feel too much sadness and/or embarassement.
here, open stone means basically that, but she also uses the imperative tense, to command the stone to truly open up, for she is so influenced by the cheating man (whether sad or humiliated maybe angry or anything, since it doesn't tell you, you can interpret it however)
also it leaves it open to interpret with the "instead of a bride i should be dressed in black" cause it may be a show of her sadness on the matter or since traditionally women would dress in black if the husband died well, yeah she'd do crimes
this last one is also backed by the lyric "night descend" command, followed by her using as the reason for it the fact the man's cheating, cause when would one kill their husband (this may just be my opinion)
she does say everything clearly but even still she doesn't in a way, cause you wouldn't want to believe the darker side so you can always choose to interpret it differently
At last "the sun may not see me" is not the best translation one could say. It is, however, litterally what she says, she wants the sun not to see her, meaning she doesn't want to see the light of day, that could be depression, but also, due to the closed nature of society in those days, it may just be because she doesn't want to face the judging faces of everyone or more.

Anoixe petra has to be one of the all time classic Greek songs, and probably the most characteristic song sung by Marinella. The song was heard for the first time in the Greek movie “Gorgones kai magkes” in 1969.
Marinella was not a very known and popular singer up that point, because she was under the shadow of Kazantzidis, but the movie and her impressive performance of that song made her an instant star. Marinella sings a love song about the loss of her love - Anoixe petra literally means “Open stone” but in popular Greek language the stone can refer to the tombstone, especially in cases of despair, fear or loss.
    Music: Mimis Plessas
    Performed by: Marinella
Anoixe petra - Marinella - English Lyrics
Open rock for me to shut in
so that the sun may not see me,
instead of bride I now must,
    I must dress in black.
Open rock for me to go in
I’m losing the man I love
    Night descend from the mountains
    night clad in black,
    the man I loved
    now hurts for another woman.
    Night descend from the mountains
so that day may never see me again
''It is recalled that Marinella collapsed on the stage of Herodei, during her concert, on Wednesday (25/9 /2024). As it became known, a few hours after being transferred to the hospital, the artist had suffered a "serious stroke (bleeding)".
Marinella (Greek: Μαρινέλλα) (born May 20, 1938) is a popular Greek singer whose career has spanned several decades. Even though Marinella is often considered a singer of folk songs, her range is quite broad and has included a variety of musical styles including traditional, laika, pop, blues, and jazz. Marinella is characterised as "The Great Lady of Song" in Greece, where she is regarded with great respect. She rarely makes public appearances, and her concerts are few. She was born Kyriaki Papadopoulou, in the city of Thessaloniki in northern Greece. She released her first song in 1957, "Nitsa Elenitsa" ("Little Helen"). Her early career was marked by her collaboration with singer Stelios Kazantzidis.Marinella was the first Greek singer to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest of 1974, placing eleventh with the song "Krasi, Thalassa Kai T' Agori Mou" ("A little wine, a little sea and my man"). She also performed in several Greek musicals, both as singer and actress. Her popularity rose in the 70's and 80's, with a string of successful albums and live shows. She developed a new standard for shows in the Greek night clubs, introducing costumes, dancing, and special lighting effects. Many of today's popular Greek singers (Anna Vissi, Despina Vandi etc.) have modelled their shows on Marinella's shows of the 80's.
In 1998, Marinella performed in the Megaron Music Hall of Athens, performing her older hits to great acclaim. In 2003, she collaborated with George Dalaras. They gave concerts in Athens and Thessaloniki as well as abroad. The tour was titled "Mazi" ("Together") and the released CD from these performances reached platinum status. In 2004, she released a brand new album with new songs by Nikos Antypas and Lina Nikolakopoulou. In the same year she performed at the closing ceremony of the 2004 Summer Olympics.
In 2005, Marinella released a new album titled Tipota Den Ginete Tyhea, composed by famous Greek composer and lyricist Giorgos Theofanous. The album reached gold status and includes duets with famous Greek singers, such as Antonis Remos, Glykeria and Kostas Makedonas. In 2006, 2 new compilations of Marinella were officially released, the first titled Sti Skini and containing older live recordings and the second one titled Ta Logia Ine Peritta - 50 Chronia Tragoudi, which is a complete 8 CDs boxset with Marinella's greatest hits from the beginning of her career till her collaboration with Kostas Hatzis at "Recital".
Marinella returned to nightlife by performing live with Antonis Remos in the winter season 2007-2008 at Athinon Arena. It was a much anticipated show in Greece, especially given that Marinella had not appeared in any music club for 10 years. Her great quality of voice and the strength of her performances turned this live show to the most successful one for this year in Athens! At the same time Minos EMI and Sony BMG Greece jointly released a double album titled "Marinella - Antonis Remos LIVE" with recordings from these live shows, which has already reached platinum status for sales

As a singer and a musician and a greek, I have heard this song since childhood so I know pretty well the music from the organs doing the companion and the melody that accompany her voice right? in this concert which I have never heard before, she keeps the exact melodic quality and stability while basically she is acapella. This is a raw talent over there because the notes are quite hard to hit and to keep the melodic value of the song and not sounding flat. She is knitting it and she does a great job because for a sec my brain went to the organs while there are none.

One has to see this in context. "Anoikse Petra" is an iconic song sang by Marinella first time in 1968 for a legendary film. The song characterised Marinella, became synomynous with the big drama scene, defined an era of Greek cinematography, but also it is intensely in the collective psyhe of the Greeks as all the above. Hence the dramatic play with the drums responds to all the above.

Thank you. I had not seen this version.
First, the translation of the line “hurts for another woman” is better translated to “is deeply in love with another woman”.
Second, I first saw her sing this in 1969 at a night club outside Athens. There were no drums but rather bouzoukis. The stage opens in total black and total silence. You could hear a pin drop. Then the spot light comes onto Marinella as she starts a cappella with AH-NEEK-SE PE-TRA!!!! Then the bouzoukis come in. Incredibly powerful.
In this rendition her voice is even stronger.
Here is a link to the album from 1969. The song is at 17:55

You FELT this song, even if there were no _subtitles_ you would have still felt it resonate deep within your core. And just think: Marinella was 80 years old here during this performance, and I can tell you that her vocal range as well as her _voice_ is better here, than it was during her youth, when she first emerged back in the early to mid 60's.
