Hey man, you don't gotta like back reeling to take in another perspective. Plus the grip advice was valid, I've seen mad people miss that. But I get what you're saying, this dude do be rambling. It'd be easier to digest if he didn't make it seem as though every drag system was useless and that noone should try it. It seems at the VERY LEAST like the easiest way to use the reel when starting out. I've been doing it for years and caught a lot of fish that are pin size fish on them.(we give pins out for really big catches in my state).
Ive been fishing for all kinds of stuff, big or small. Something I don't do? Backreel. It increases the chances of you putting too much slack in your line, and if you are catching fish like Shark and bull drum, that can lead to a lost. By the way. For beginners getting into Saltwater fishing? Good luck finding a spinning reel with an anti reverse knob. Its just another area for salt to get into your reel and mess it all up.
Amen . Trying to back reel with a Bull Red, Mahi Mahi, Cuda or Tuna…….no way. Technic might be OK for fresh water but back reeling on a 60-100lder…….going to lose the fish for sure, no way you can keep up with a lightning fast saltwater fish.
Been backreeling for 50yrs. Never have trouble with slack line, with a little practice it can be done.u actually hav more control over the fish,I guess would be hard to understand if u hav always done it the other way.
More bites because reeling backwards? 🤔 You reel backwards after the bite. I also doubt that you can beat the reactiontime of a drag. 😉 If you close your drag you can brake your line while setting the hook. An open drag might prevent this and as others mentioned before, backreeling increases the chance of to much slack in your line. But if it works for you, great. 👍
A couple winters ago, I was fishing my Megabass Ito 110 jerkbait when I hooked up with a 6-8 pound striper. After the hook up and initial run by the fish, I quickly realized I had a striper and not a big spotted bass. My first thoughts to myself was “ don’t lose that $25.00 lure”, and then my thoughts were, “ I need to try out Randy’s back reeling technique while fighting the striper”. I can tell you two things. I got back my favorite jerk bait and that striper made me “ His bitch”. I had never gotten my hand so brutally slapped by the rotating handle while trying to keep up with his powerful runs. After three very painful back reeling attempts, I clicked on the anti reverse and simply set the drag and boated the striper. I can back reel on smaller bass, but on larger fish, it is difficult for me. This is just the experience I observed.
@af4od02 I hav caught 15pd catfish doing it. Also several 7_9lb walleye doing just that. In some extreme cases the drag will help out a little, but I never let go of reel handle. But I've been useing spinning tackle since the 70s.
It works for some people. Not everybody. And a lot of reels do not have the selector switch. Personally, I just set my drag to be tight enough and can easily adjust it while fighting fish if I need to. It comes down to preference. Good video though, Randy.
Are there any professional fisherman left in either series that still back-reel? I’ve watched the coverage of most tournaments over the past thirty years and I don’t remember when the last time I saw someone back-reel.
Ever since going to braid to fluoro leader, I have eliminated the line twist you get on spinning reels with straight fluoro or mono. Would I prefer to use those lines straight? Sure, if they didn’t twist up. No twist with braid on a spinning outfit makes my fishing day more enjoyable and productive because I don’t have to worry about my line twisting. No problems using a fluoro leader. Just make sure to tie a good connecting knot and retie it after a while…especially after hauling in some fish.
I do the same but only with the heavy spinning rod that I use for musky bucktails after the casting rod has worn me out.

Been fishing spinning reels and back reeling big fish on light line for almost 50 years. Yes, it works. And yes, they'll be guys who say it's unnecessary. Funny, they only say it when the fish is in the boat.
I buy Daiwa's because of the anti-reverse Back reeling allows me to apply just apply the right pressure Especially when I forget to set the drag correctly :)
@ronaldmcdonald3965 yep, everyone thinks backreeling is crazy. If they would take time and learn how they would understand. Been doing it for 50 + years
Im 64 years old, and for decades my fishing buddies chastised for for lock down on my drag and back reeling. "You're going to loose that fish " !! Now time has proven them wrong. Like you said, I've caught monster fish while bluegill, walleye, crappie and Saugerties fishing with a open face reel. They never have. Sssnap!!
Worst advice ever and somehow you calk it a fact. You must be using some poor quality fishing reels if you don't trust drag. If backreeling was the way to fight fish how come Shimano the biggest producer of fishing reels doesn't have that option on their reels anymore? I have never seen anybody using backreeling intead of drag.
I cast like you hold it. But Especially when I am finesse fishing and especially swimming crappie jigs threw tree tops I have my hand up on the rod when retrieving or atleast my pointer finger. Cant detect alot of small ticks. It works for me. Keep them coming
If you buy quality reels with quality drags, you can infact use the drag. I have caught big bass on light leaders as well as 12lb+ steelhead on 3lb leader, 30lb+ salmon with 10lb leader relying on my drag. Good luck back reeling on steelhead or salmon without breaking knuckles. If you have to back reel, your reel and drag isn't a quality product. People use their reels how they want. This video is matter of opinion.
Aside from how much fun it is watching and feeling a fish pull drag I see where you’re coming from. I have a few really nice KastKing spinning reels with the reverse switch. I’ll give your tip a try but I’ll say this as a talking point. Maybe the reason all the old school angers had to reel in reverse is because drag\brake technology wasn’t what it is today. Randy you’re on point of how to hold a spinning rig that’s a fact.
There's no skill involved using ffs ... anyone can follow instructions on a screen. But you probly couldn't catch a bluegill without ffs so... just play fishing video games and leave the real stuff to those of us that understand fish biology and can read a lake top chart.
I love your spinning reel videos for reminders and better understanding. No offense but I'll forever disagree with the backbreaking. I've found even mid-level spinning reel drags to be reliable. That's just me.
Do a backreling tutorial. It seems like nonsense to me, but I'd like to see another perspective. My opinion may change if I can get a better idea of what the technique is and when to use it.
Do a video for us old timers that are getting cataracts. What type of line that would help us see and don't say anchor rope. Lol How to tie your hook on if there is nobody there to help you.aybe clips , or safety pins. I'm serious. Any ideas will help.and I'm sure you have other tips , and safety tips. I am really getting bad in my Right Eye. Any suggestions. Love to fish ,don't want to trouble anglers , like to be able to do things on my own. I will be 70 soon.
Good to know.Im just getting into the spinning part. I have always used baitcasters. I ordered 2 rods yesterday and now looking at reels. I always heard there is too much line twist with straight floro? Straight floro would be great
You can use straight flouro no problem. I've done it hundreds of times. Get like 15-25 dollar flouro though, not the mega cheap stuff. The cheap stuff breaks and twists pretty easily.
Went into this video expecting to disagree with you, but I echo everything you are saying. The ONLY time I use that anti reverse is when I hang that hook in the keeper and put the rod away.
I do occasionally but you need an old direct drive reel to do it. The last one I believe anyone bought was the Abu 5000D, and maybe some of the earliest flipping reels.
@davidpelo-w3g I'm just curious why this technique isn't advertised, or implemented into new reel production. My guess is skill level of user vs skill level of consumer ?
I would you are right about the industry appealing to the path of least resistance. This happens, best example I can remember is after “a river runs through it” came out the rush of new fly fishermen couldn’t figure out how to reel with the right hand (probably after learning spinning reels first) the whole industry responded by making fly reels left hand wind by default, doesn’t matter if it’s better or not.
I bought a casting rod last year. Brought it home and put a spinning reel on it. Felt like a dumb@ss. Ended up bringing it back and trading it for a spinning rod. I guess I wasn't paying attention that day LOL. The sad part is that I used to build rods so I should have paid attention. I just looked at the handle didn't have a trigger on it like most of my bait casting rods have.
Maybe your no drag technique is okay for bass. But I promise you cannot reel in reverse fast enough to deal with a saltwater fish that runs for real. It's just not going to work for king mackerel or tuna or even bonefish on the flats. I can't believe it's possible to back reel 100 yards of line in a couple seconds. But if it's working for bass, cool.
I disagree. Your whole hand should be in front of the reel seat. If not, your rod is top-heavy, not balanced. I have relied on my drag on my Quantum PT and Lew's reels for decades and have NEVER lost a fish due to drag.
Not using your drag is insane, that is your opinion and I disagree with it but I totally agree with using straight fluorocarbon, I don't understand the reasoning behind using braid to a fluoro leader.
Sitting in a boat on top of the fish no braid is needed. Fishing from the shore every meter you can cast further counts, sometimes. 😉 Braid is thiner and you can cast further. Also less resistance In a current, so you can fish lighter jigs because they sink faster.
@@TheZeppelin14 do as you like. Everybody has his preference. I hope you never have to fish a spot, where you need the extra few meters you could cast to catch a fish using braid or cut through aquatic plants the hooked fish is taking you in. 😉 Tight lines and be save
Using braid on spinning reels eliminates the typical line twist you’d get from straight fluoro or mono/copoly. I’d prefer using straight fluoro or mono if it didn’t twist on a spinning reel. Going braid to fluoro leader gives me no line twist and makes my fishing day more enjoyable and productive.

When throwing light lures, which is mostly what I do, I put the line under my thumb and release. Unbelievable accuracy!
