I'm spinning singles for a shawl at the moment and, having watched your video, tried this method with a little of the yarn. I have to say this is wonderful. I can't get to my swift at the moment but as it was only a small amount of yarn I simply unwound it rather than wind into a ball and then wound it on my tiniest niddy noddy. When I have finished spinning the singles I will be using your method to finish the yarn. Thank you so much! 😀💗💗👍
@@tinyStudioMagazine I finished spinning my fine singles of 40 wpi and went on to treat the yarn with your method. It worked really well but I was exhausted and my arms were dropping off as there were 800 metres of yarn!! I have knitted it now into a lacey shawl and it was lovely to knit with. Perhaps another time I will spin the same length in shorter amounts at a time so I can avoid the fatigue!
Wanting to try spinning singles but no idea how to finish. Than you for this video, saved it for future reference. Been spinning for over ten years and still learning new things.
I am so excited to try this thank you so much for creating such an east video to follow. Just one question what was the temperature of the water you soaked your singles in? Thank you.
Spun worsted for this one. Y ou can use the method on woollen as well but it will compact it rather than fluff it up, so for woollen yarns it can be better to thwack to finish, letting the air into the fibers and allowing the loft in :)
The only problem I can see with that is getting it off the first niddy noddy, I think another option would be a willing pair of extra hands to hold the damp skein for you to rewind back onto the niddy noddy again!
This is done with damp (not dripping) yarn, in order to very lightly felt (full) the outside surface of the yarn. It remains soft and airy because you are not felting it with agitation or smooshing, but it needs to be a little damp to work well.
I was pleasantly surprised at how well this method worked! My singles now much more balanced and smooth. Thank you
Great to hear!
This video saved my first hand spun yarn!! Thank you!!
thank you so much!
You're welcome!
This is lovely , also nice filming ! Thank you 🙏

That sounds like it was a great success! I can't take credit for this technique, but I am happy to share it, the results are so good :)

I must try that
Thanks for posting this, I have been wanting to try setting twist on singles for a long time now, but wasn't sure how. Thanks!
Glad I could help!
Very timely video, thank you. I have just spun a singles mohair yarn that is definitely causing bias. Will try this method on a sample length.
Lovely video and very nice music too!

Just hand warm is good for this :)
❤
This turned out lovely 🥰 Could you use this method on plyed yarns to remove some energy from the yarn?
Yes, although it will alter the look of the yarn somewhat. I’d suggest trying a small sample piece first :)
Thanks always want to spin a single yarn but just worry it is too unstable. This video really help
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for this. Do you rinse the soap out of the yarn?
Sometimes, it depends how much I put in, usually its just enough to help it get well saturated in the water.
When you wind it into a cake, then wind it back on the niddy noddy, do you start with the inside end or wind from the outside?
I usually go from the outside as it’s easier when it’s damp that way
Hi Suzy, would you mind telling me if you spun the yarn worsted or woollen please? I guess that method works well for either. Thanks - Nola

Very cool. I don't have a swift or a ball winder. I wonder if you moved it from one niddy noddy to another in the same manner if it would work?

@@tinyStudioMagazine Yes, that would be difficult by yourself. Maybe that's what grandaughters are for. lol. Thanks!
Sorry did the yarn dry on a swift after washing, and only after it had dried you put it on a bobbin? Or you did this with wet yarn?

What breed of sheep was this wool? Very beautiful.
I believe this one was a mix of eri silk and merino :)
