NOTE - an alternative method for setting the twist - after wrapping the yarn on your niddy noddy leave the yarn on, then soak the yarn still on the niddy noddy, try to squeeze some of the water out and let it completely dry on the niddy noddy, then remove.

Thank you! I’ve been watching both tutorials with keen interest. I’m a lace knitter (haapsalu, Shetland, Ohrenburg… ) and my main issue is finding lace weight yarn that is to my liking. One of my favourite things to do is when I am in a situation that involves giving a gift, I prefer to give something I made myself. Knitting and crochet already fills a lot of that need. But being able to gift a lace shawl or scarf I didn’t just init or crochet myself but also spun the yarn for is something I’ve been contemplating for ages. I thought I’d need a spinning wheel. Apparently not. A spindle should do it and surprisingly there is A LOT more choice in wool, wool blends etc to pick from that with some practice I might be able to spin!
I think I might get myself two spindles. A slightly heavier (medium?) practice one that would work towards getting the hang of it, and once I’m satisfied with the results, the lightest one I can get for laceweight yarn. There’s even a local farm that sells washed, carded wool to crafters and the fibers are ideal for spinning fingering weight and even lighter weight yarn. And they sell it cheaper than I can get online if I go pick it up myself (they have this eco-deal that the closer you are, the less they charge).

Thanks for actually illustrating how it pigtails after being plied. All the other videos I watched on finishing, they all had these perfectly relaxed hanks after plying (but mine most certainly is not!), so I watched this today to figure out how to fix that. But in watching your video, now I know that this is normal! And, I can even feel free to add a little more twist when plying! This is great to know. Thanks so much for solving this mystery! I don't know why nobody else mentions this!

Great tutorial. It's a lot of work but a lot of satisfaction seeing the end result of your work.
Now we can understand why hand son, hand dyed yarns are so pricey. Although those who do it and sell it probably aren't getting as much money as they should be for all their work.

Funny that you mention Bob Ross, I was just thinking about him today, because my Mom & I were talking about him yesterday - his quotes are so funny, down to earth, and TRUE. I don't spin, but I really enjoyed watching 2 of your spinning videos today, they are so interesting that they seem shorter in length than they actually are! Your kitchen looks a lot like mine, the counter tops are the same colors, black appliances, and my cabinets are very similar!

If you need tension on the spools to keep them from unwinding unevenly, you can use rubber bands around the drive groove or the tops.

Thanks! Good seeing how to wind it before the skinny dip. I finally have one ready to ply. I had to pre-draft everything to get any kind of consistency. It's a long process, but for me it's relaxing and fun.

The yarn is gorgeous. I'm so glad you said you use the Russian join. I use it 99 % of all my joins. Even have used it on thin yarns. But all my sisters in my church, on our quilting day, and I'm working on a crochet project . I use the Russian join and the sister s that watch are saying that it's too much bother. Not to me. The Russian join makes the project seamless. No unsightly knots it loose ends that always work their way out of the weaving in the ends.

Very cool, loved your video,often wondered and now I know, but truthfully, I made my own spindle, and will probably make my own knitty knotty, a length of pc pipe and two elbows from Home Depot, not a problem, when you are not well to do you learn how to make your own stuff. I'm real handy that way, after all couldn't you make one from tinker toys like we played with as kids?
