  • Amy and I love traveling and we chose Bora Bora as the ultimate place for our 30th anniversary. We stayed in an over-the-water bungalow at the world-famous St. Regis Bora Bora and were totally impressed.
During our 10-day stay we did a lot of things including jet skiing, snorkeling, standup paddleboarding, fine dining, and ride bikes, both on the land and in the water. We also swam with sharks and stingrays, rented a car to check out the center main island, did lots of chilling and even rented a private plan for a few hours to go sightseeing.
So, here are our recommendations of the best things to do in Bora Bora on your vacation.
Although we loved walking around the property at our resort, the most-fun way go get around is by bicycle. There are approximately a dozen resorts in Bora Bora, and most of them have bikes available for guests to move around the property. Our over-the-water-bungalow at the St. Regis included the complimentary use of two bikes, and we probably rode them 10 to 15 miles during our 10-day stay. The bikes are a lot of fun and extremely relaxing. Trust me, these bike are your friend!
We also recommend riding personal watercraft, such as a Bombardier Sea-Doo, Kawasaki Jet Ski or Yamaha WaveRunner when in Bora Bora. The water during our stay in March was 85 degrees Fahrenheit and it’s absolutely perfect. An organized tour like the one we went on costs about $350 per couple and lasts about two hours. We chose this over a sunset cruise because we wanted some type of adrenalin rush mixed into our vacation.
One of our favorite things to do on vacation is to snorkel, and most resorts offer free use of mask and fins. We snorkeled directly in front of our over-the-water-bungalow, and also in the St. Regis Lagoonarium. The Lagoonarium is a several-acre spot that is full of 120 different species of fish and coral, and ideally suited for viewing. Amy and I spent about two hours in the water, and the concentration of undersea life was fairly robust. There are all sorts of companies that offer snorkeling tours, but we opted for the more casual and relaxed method and never had any regrets. We did go swimming with sharks and stingrays, and we will show you that later in this video.
Without a doubt, one of the most-relaxing things to do in Bora Bora is to simply float on an inflatable toy. Amy was smart enough to bring a 100-foot of rope so we can simply tie off to our bungalow and not drive too far with the current. This was absolutely the best, but make sure you wear a lot of sunscreen and keep applying throughout the day because the sun reflects off the water and white sand with more intensity than at most other beaches.
Amy’s favorite part of our Bora Bora vacation was swimming with the sharks and stingrays. We stopped at three separate spots, the first of which was a shallow reef with a wide variety of colorful fish. We saw a few thousand fish during our 30-minute stay, and even saw this amazing eal. Our group featured five other couples and a guide that was born and raised in Bora Bora.
I brought along my GoPro 11 and played with a variety of settings. Having a quality underwater camera is a must in Bora Bora, and if you don’t want to spend the money on a GoPro, companies like Pelican make incredible cases for phones that are very capable of helping you create lasting memories. So take note, swimming with sharks is a must for any Bora Bora vacation.
The high-end bar on the property of the St. Regis is incredible and we went there a half dozen times to begin most evenings. The view at the 727 Bar at sunset was amazing. The 727 in the name comes from the 727-meter high Mount Otemanu, the highest point on Bora Bora. Service is also top notch and every evening there is a ceremony to open the first bottle of champagne with a sword. This was done by a different person every night and was a cool tradition that we looked forward to each evening as the sun was going down.
Without a doubt, sunset is the most-popular time on the dock. The colors are absolutely stunning, and the temperature is perfect all year round. Even though weather apps will show lots of rain, the rain mostly falls at night.
The highlight of the trip for me was a private plane flight. Amy and I originally booked a helicopter tour, but they had to cancel for maintenance. I am a private pilot and found someone on another island who was willing to let me take the controls for about 75 minutes. The owner of the plane only spoke French so it was one of my most-interesting flights to say the least. The plane also only had two seats, so Amy stayed back at the resort. Amy is absolutely amazing!
