For the last part of the question, if each part of the string moves with a different speed how can you take the velocity of the ant relative to the string to be v?
After thinking about it for a while I think I have started to understand it. How the parts of the string below the ant move are irrelevant because the velocity v is said to be relative to the string (even if each part moves with a different velocity), it is really really weird.
