      Here's something to think about:
      There is more metal in one medium-sized asteroid (just one of many) in our solar system than all the steel we have mined on the earth so far. We far have more than enough metal to build the executor, death star etc in our solar system's asteroid field.

      @@StarWarsJay it's not really a discrepancy. The DS2 is significantly BIGGER than the ORIGINAL Death Star.
      The original Death Star was the size of a freakin' moon.
      The Executor is the size of a small city. Which is a lot smaller than a small moon.
      At the time of the destruction of it's bridge, it was pointed at the Death Star, engines going full power.
      Unable to steer it, it just kept going until it hit the small planet sized DS2.
      This only took a couple minutes because of the power of the Executor's massive thrusters.

    • @GuukanKitsune
      @GuukanKitsune 3 роки тому +4

      @@StarWarsJay That I always put down to sheer imperial hubris. I mean, they kind of have a track record of building huge imposing super war machines they tout as unbeatable that turn out to have an exploitable design flaw. (DS's exhaust port, AT-ATs are topheavy and vulnerable to tripping, the SSD losing it's bridge)
      Although, in fairness... the hit came just after a concentrated prolonged attack SPECIFICALLY TARGETED on the bridge's deflector shields, with gold leader probably intending to fire a proton torpedo right through the helm until he was hit and decided he could do more damage by BEING the torpedo at that point.
      I mean, much like the Death Star, the imperials figured nobody would be stupid enough to mount a smallscale attack of fighters, and geared the SSD up to take on entire fleets at a time instead.
      Didn't learn from the original DS, it would seem.

    Triangle-shaped ships make sense due to the fact that triangular structures are good at dispersing weight and force across their surface, so not only would the ship have high structural integrity, the impact from weapons fire (energy-based, or kinetic) would not be as damaging as if it was slamming into a completely flat side wall. At the same time, if the Executor-Class could angle itself properly in the direction of incoming enemy fire, its triangular hull would also give it the effect of sloped armor, letting any physical projectiles, and the kinetic energy and explosions generated by them, to slide off to the side, as well as, for all practical reasons, thickening the armor from the perspective of the direction of the shots hitting it.
    The only thing I _definitely don't like_ about them, as the video pointed out, is that exposed bridge. Shield generators or not, the thing is exposed, and shield generators only seem to be effective at repelling energy-based attacks, and explosions (to an extent), whereas objects with high masses and kinetic energy levels (such as an A-wing pulling a kamikaze attack) just seems to go right through them, armor plating or not. I'd have the bridge in the center of the hull (like on Covenant warships in the Halo franchise, or the USS Defiant and its class of star ship in Star Trek) and the tower that normally holds the bridge instead having folding armor plating that can be deployed over the rest of the ship's superstructure and citadel in order to provide additional defense when required. All the space inside what would normally be the bridge tower would instead be used to hold additional shield generators and motors to maneuver those fold-out armor panels I mentioned before.

    • @177SCmaro

      For as much as Disney messed up the sequel trilogy the Resurgent-class Star Destroyers used by the First Order make somewhat more sense with their lower-profile superstructures, bridge, and shields (of course, Disney turned right around and screwed it up again by making the Xyston-class, which were basically cut, paste enlarge and add a super laser versions of the old SD). I think what George Lucas was going for with the original Star Destroyer design was imitating the appearance of World War II battleship superstructure, especially the conning tower and mast. What he apparently didn't realize was that most battleship conning towers were among the best protected areas of the ship with exceptionally thick armor precisely so what happened to the Executor in Return of the Jedi didn't happen in real life.
      In a spaceship an over-exposed bridge on top of the ship makes no sense and is a huge weakness especially given it's apparent lack of armor such that a single fighter in a suicide attack can take out the entire ship.

      I always thought the TIE compliments listed for Star Destroyers (144 for an Executor-class, 72 for and ISD) were rather a minimum guaranteed compliment assigned to the ship regardless of what it was doing. Given the compactness of TIEs and the size of the ships, I believe they could carry far more, and do depending on their missions, but don't always carry a full load of ships, troops or vehicles. Sort of how aircraft carriers in our world don't always have their full airwing.

    • @grandadmiralzaarin4962
      @grandadmiralzaarin4962 3 роки тому

      @@oliverdavis1910 While they have the potential to be modified, most don't have the room for the TIEs as those areas are reserved for garrison, supplies and lodgings. There were some Executors modified to be carriers, such as the Terror and Night Hammer, but these were the exceptions to the rule and usually custom built.
      Remember that most of the Imperial High Command believed in Big Gun ships and that fighters were only for the small work or basic screening. That's largely because at the end of the Clone Wars, it was Big Gun ships like the VSD and ISD that put down the Sep Holdouts who generally relied on fighter swarms, so it was doctrinal and also big ships cost more money and have more status so careers and corporate deals were tied to the Big Gun Big Ship mentality. This wasn't helped by the fact that the two main proponents of fighter supremacy in the Empire(Zaarin and Batch) turned traitor or their projects blew up, discrediting the Fighter supremacy argument. Most of the top fighter believers in the Empire outside of those two defected to the Rebellion.

      I can let it go because its just for fun, and we can say it was allegorically designed with one bridge and no backup systems or anything because it's meant to represent how the Imperial forces for all their might and scary fronts are ultimately brittle on the inside. Good info, though it matters if you take only Canon or Legends information.
    In Canon, there are 5 named Executor-Class vessels: Executor (first of the line & Darth Vader's flagship), Annihilator (renamed 'Liberty's Misrule' by pirates after capturing), Arbitrator (hyperspace jump miscalculated & ended up in a black hole, oops), Eclipse (Emperor Palpatine's flagship) & Ravager (destroyed in the Battle of Jakku). Rebel Alliance's intelligence believed there were more than a dozen additional other than (First Order has &/or in Unknown Region?), though no confirmation of & might have been a result of Imperial propaganda (though still a scary thought).
    In Legends continuity, there were 10 named vessels: Executor (Darth Vader's flagship), Terror (had cloaking devices, destroyed by Rebels), Vengeance (believe destroyed at the Battle of Nocto), Annihilator (destroyed), Eclipse (Emperor Palpatine's flagship, developed into a new class with a super laser as its core weapon, destroyed by one of Palpatine's rogue Force Storm), Reaper (destroyed at the Battle of Celanon), Brawl (renamed 'Iron Fist', severely damaged the Battle of Selaggis, destroyed at Dathomiri shipyards), Executor II (renamed ' Lusankya' after capture by New Republic Forces), Guardian (captured by New Republic Force & put into service of) & Night Hammer (renamed 'Knight Hammer', was post-Galactic Civil War built, had stealth plating & destroyed by falling into the gas giant, Yaven Prime). There was an 11th being built during the time of the Galactic Civil war that was supposed to have enhanced cloaking, but it was destroyed at the shipyards.
    The Super laser's output for the Legend's Eclipse was believed to be only 25% of that used by the Drath Star; not enough to destroy a planet out right but powerful enough to crack the crust of.
    If you understand the math for the power needed to be anywhere between the dinosaur meteor extinction theory & that level of impact forming the Moon theory, it's somewhere in that range of magnitude of destructive capabilities.

      Wrong about the Lusankya: the New Republic didn´t give it the name Lusankya. This SSD was built at the same time than the Executor but on a different shipyard(Fondor, while Kuat took care of Executor), but since it was conceived to be a lifesaver for the Emperor in case Coruscant was under siege, the Empire classified it as a black project and gave it the same name as the Executor, to hide it and deviate the needed funds to build it without raising suspicions. It was fully finished and buried beneath Coruscant. Then the Emperor gave it to Ysanne Isard to use it as a torture facility and prison for political prisoners; to brainwash them and use them as dormant agents against the New Republic(Tycho Celchu was accused to be one of them). Isard knew all the time the true name of the SSD, and once she boarded it and took off Coruscant(destroying thousands of square kilometers of city in the process) its transponders started emitting its designation. It was captured by the New Republic after the Bacta War and Isard´s defeat and apparent death. The New Republic repaired it, put it under Wedge Antilles´s command and was in service until it was sacrificed to defeat the Yuuzang Vong.

    • @Nacho_Ferrari
      @Nacho_Ferrari 3 роки тому +1

      @@GGrey1975 My bad if I sounded harsh, it wasn´t my intention. The Lusankya is my favorite SSD and I always got carried away when talking about it haha. The Lusankya wasn´t officially comissioned because it was a black project: the vast majority of people didn´t know it even existed, the engineers of Fondor thought they were building the Executor, and it wasn´t adscribed to the Imperial Navy; hence it didn´t appear on any database. It was built in secret under the name of Executor, brought to Coruscant and buried underneath the city. How? It´s rumored that the Emperor used the Dark Side of the Force to cloud the perception of millions of people while it was being buried. After that, the Emperor renamed it himself to Lusankya and gave it to madame Ysanne Isard, director of Imperial Intelligence, to use it as she pleased.

    • @GGrey1975
      @GGrey1975 3 роки тому +2

      @@Nacho_Ferrari You have shown & were in defense of your passion, I can't fault you for that.
      I knew of the Lusankya through looking up the Legends information of the Executor-class, though none mentioned that Emperor Palpatine christened the vessel with that name (as a 'Black Project', Executor II would've been a designation, like serial number 002 of a series). The rest was though well commented on in the 'cliff notes' versions on.
      At best, I might had thought Director Isard named it as the facility used before the departure/use (& destruction of parts of Coruscant's surface/city) of the ship as designed.
      Speculatively looking back to the construction of, hiding it in the bureaucracy becomes actually elementary due to the departmentalization of the Empire for that "black project."
      As the Executor-Class was a new & 'experimental' layout (though all relative technologies used in were numerous & 'off the shelf' at the time); budgetary over-runs on construction could be "waved away" because it was "new" in needing development & research, deflecting the fact that two spaceframes were actually being built. Any later filings/paperwork that mentioned continued work at the Kuat Shipyards could then be explained as 'continuing the co-development of systems' for the class after one had been moved to Fondor in response to the Battle/disaster at Yavin (as if 'Project Stardust' was not enough of a disappointment/headache at that point!).
      As the Fondor Shipyards had been used for other capital ships, the finishing off the Executor's systems would been nothing new to see from a business aspect; especially if it meant any new construction of the class might be contracted to them. Also, in not knowing of the second spaceframe (later the Lusankya) was being finished off at the Kuat Shipyards, they couldn't have spoken of because they dd not have that information for any Imperial Budget Oversight Committee investigators to find.
      The burial of the Lusankya as a massive "planetary shield generator" looks good in filings/paper, though someone had to witness it. Staying with the wizarding that's known as the Force: if Palpatine was aboard during the 'instillation' of the generator, then a Force Illusion (mind trick on a massive scale) might have happened (look like what was supposed to be happening), with ISF sent out to quiet any "conspiracy theorists, rumor mongers & seditionists" (witnesses of that are a species the Force doesn't affect their mind or those that were believing them), which would not be out of line for their usual work to combat 'misinformation' on events (& no additional questions about asked).

One of the comics displayed it being able to take a hit from one or two Imperial-class Star Destroyers ramming it after emerging from hyperspace, and the vessel survived with only heavy damage to the shields.
      In addition, one of the crew members mentions that the bridge deflector shields were offline after we see rebel A-Wings destroy one bulb on the command tower, so it may be possible that each shield bulb we see covers a different part of the ship.

    Like, the thing is bigger than entire regions of cities, how much space do the imperial troops need? Are their lifts going an absurd speed to be able to get people around it? Or does it have a tram...that also goes absurdly fast? Don't get me wrong I know it's just rule of cool, huge ships are cool, so its not really bugging me or anything but its just so funny to think about for fun how absurd its size is. I wonder if people got really lonely on the emptier parts of it.
    Like, if ships of this size were generational ships or massive colony ships in space then it'd make some sense but for a military ship its just obnoxious. It works for Star Wars though because it's obviously meant to represent the Emperor's colossal ego- I mean, "spread fear across the galaxy to any who'd challenge the Empire."
