If you're interested in our evangelical scholar's analysis of this moment, read below:
Could Jesus Pray for Judas Iscariot?
SHORT ANSWER: Yes, Jesus could pray for Judas Iscariot. There is no logical contradiction in the idea of Jesus praying for Judas, and there is no indication in Scripture that Jesus would somehow have been prevented from praying for Judas (or any other sinner).
LONG ANSWER: Treating several questions related to this main question.
Did Jesus pray for others? We know that Jesus prayed while on earth (e.g., Matt. 14:23; 26:36-44; Mark 1:35; 6:46; 14:32-39; Luke 3:21; 5:16; 6:12; 9:18, 28-29; 11:1; 22:39-45; John 17:1-26; Heb. 5:7). Furthermore, it seems clear enough that Jesus prayed for other people, with examples that include him praying for children (Matt. 19:13-15); apparently for a demon-possessed person (Mark 9:14-29); for Peter (Luke 22:31-34); for his immediate followers (John 17:6-26), for the people who were crucifying him (Luke 23:34), and even for those of us who would become his followers later on (John 17:20-26). Moreover, Jesus is currently praying for believers (Rom. 8:34; Heb. 7:25). Significant here is that Luke reports that Jesus spent the night in prayer before selecting the men who would be apostles (Luke 6:12-16); it would be odd to suggest that Jesus prayed about eleven of the twelve but did not pray about Judas.
If Jesus and the Father are the same, they share the same will, so how could Jesus pray for Judas? This question has three difficulties, each worth treating on its own.
    a) First, the question begins by accidentally sliding into heretical thinking, that is, assuming that Jesus and the Father are "the same." While Jesus and the Father are one and the same God, they are not the same person. This is the mystery of the Trinity. The Father is God, and Jesus is God, and the Holy Spirit is God. But the Father is not the Son, and the Son is not the Spirit, and the Spirit is not the Father. The three persons of the one God are distinct. The Father did not die for our sins; Jesus did. The Holy Spirit did not become incarnate; Jesus did.
    b) Second and similarly, the question does not recognize that it is equivocating (i.e., subtly changing the meaning) on the definition of the word "will." While Jesus and the Father share the same "will" in one sense of that word, it is evident that they don't have the same "will" in another sense of that word. This becomes clear when Jesus himself makes a distinction between his will and the Father’s will, which he does in the Garden of Gethsemane while praying(!) (see Matt. 26:36-44; Mark 14:32-39; and Luke 22:39-45). Apparently it is entirely possible for the sinless human will of Jesus to give expression in prayer about a sinless natural desire (like health and safety), and this will of Jesus must ultimately be sacrificed for a greater purpose (i.e., providing salvation for humanity). Perhaps this kind of distinction is behind Jesus's own comment in John 5:30, "I do not seek my own will, but the will of him who sent me." The important christological discussion regarding the two natures of Jesus is not the only distinction. This also surfaces the important theological topic of differentiations of “God’s will” in Scripture. Note for example, that "God our Savior ... desires [i.e., one word for "wills"] all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2:3-4) and that “the Lord ... is patient toward you, not wishing [i.e., another word for "willing"] that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance” (2 Peter 3:9). But God “wishing/desiring/willing” that no one will perish does not guarantee that all will believe. While he certainly could if he wanted to, it is evident that God does not always override human free will to bring about what he "wants."
    c) This brings me to the third sub-point here: prayer is not magic words. Just like any of the rest of us, when Jesus prays, he is not casting a spell that makes things happen exactly as he prays. That is not what prayer is. It is a mistake for us to assume that “the prayer of a righteous person” (cf. James 5:16) gets whatever they ask for as if prayer were like speaking a magic spell; that’s not how the verse in James 5 reads. And the story about the seven sons of Sceva in Acts 19:11-20 warns against praying “in Jesus’s name” as if it were some formula for getting what we want. It is not necessary to suggest that Jesus could pray “about” Judas without praying “for” Judas, as if Judas’s free will would have been destroyed had Jesus prayed “for” him. If that were the case, why wouldn’t Jesus simply pray his magic words “for” every single person in the whole world so that everyone would be saved? Furthermore, we see Jesus expressly say that he had prayed for Peter (Luke 22:31-34), and it apparently was a prayer that did not prevent Peter from sinning but was nevertheless answered in Peter’s repentance. It would be odd to claim that Peter was the only one of his followers for whom Jesus prayed, or to press it further, to suggest that Jesus prayed for all his followers except Judas. That would again be suggesting that prayers-esp. Jesus’s prayers-are something like magic spells that overpoweringly make things happen. In other words, Jesus could pray for Judas without making it automatic that Judas be saved.
Was Judas ever (or never) a believer? This is a good question, but I'm not sure it really matters to any of us now (!). Judas Iscariot was definitely numbered among the twelve apostles (Matt. 10:1-4; Mark 3:13-19; Luke 6:12-16; John 6:70-71), so he was clearly a "follower" of Jesus. Of course, we know that he was not always behaving in a forthright way during those years of following Jesus (e.g., John 12:4-6). Nevertheless, he apparently believed something about Jesus enough to follow him for a few years. But he most famously betrayed Jesus and was replaced as an apostle because he defected from the faith (Acts 1:12-26). Those of an Arminian theological bent might like to argue that Judas was a believer who then gave up his belief; those of Calvinistic theological convictions might like to argue that Judas never was a true believer. To me, it matters little. Perhaps Judas is the quintessential example of false belief, i.e., a person who poses as a disciple but is ultimately not one, and there are other false believers mentioned in the New Testament (e.g., like Simon Magus in Acts 8:9-24; and the people against Jesus in 1 John 2:18-19). But my point here is that there is no need to try to determine the eternal fate of Judas Iscariot as if that would somehow help us recognize any further that he is not a model for any of us to look up to. That is already clear enough.
Was Jesus praying for Judas in John 17? Maybe not, but that is different than saying that Jesus never prayed for Judas. The prayer Jesus prayed in John 17 was not his only prayer, and his statement "I am not praying for the world" (v. 9) is certainly not a pledge to have never ever prayed for the world. After all, Jesus died for the world so that the world could be saved (John 3:16), for the world being saved is what God wants (1 Tim. 2:4; 2 Peter 3:9). So, John 17:9 is not proof that Jesus never ever prayed for Judas or anyone else in "the world"--it is simply a statement that Jesus was praying specifically for his followers in John 17. It seems odd to utilize John 17 to suggest that Jesus would never pray for unbelievers even though he was willing to die for unbelievers. Moreover, the New Testament gives us an example of Jesus praying for unbelievers while he was dying on the cross (Luke 23:34). If Jesus could pray for unbelievers while they were crucifying him it seems that Jesus could pray for Judas even while Judas was planning to betray him.
Could Jesus pray to God the Father asking for Judas Iscariot to not betray him? Why not? In a sense, Jesus's prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane might be said to have entailed just such a wish. Notice what Jesus prayed: “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me" (Matt. 26:39a). Jesus's request to have "this cup" of suffering pass from him might well have included Judas's betrayal not happening. But Jesus submits to the bigger plan and prays, "Yet not as I will, but as you will” (Matt. 26:39b). And in God's way of doing things whereby he maintains sovereign control over all even while humans exercise free will, God allows Judas's free choice to betray Jesus, which moves ahead the means of salvation for humanity through Jesus's suffering and resurrection.

For the record, I love The Chosen. My wife and I have been watching it every night and are now coming to the end of Season 3. I just want to say that nothing in this world is perfect, but you guys have done an amazing job. It’s as lifelike and brilliant as one could hope for.
In my ministry, I face controversy daily-it’s to be expected. With over 47,000 denominations today, controversy is inevitable. I understand that you’ve added some creative elements to the show that aren’t explicitly in the Bible, aiming to bring out the humanity of the story. Personally, I think the show is heartfelt and worthy. In my opinion, it has the potential to renew many people’s faith and even bring people to Yeshua.
I’m a heavy studier of the Scriptures. While I believe the Trinity is a concept influenced by pagan ideas and can be proven incorrect biblically, I understand your intent to remain true to the overarching message. For example, phrases like "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do" were not part of the original manuscripts. Still, you’ve done your best, and the message is strong, even if some errors exist.
The King James Version, for instance, contains added texts that have caused confusion about concepts like the Trinity. As many know, 1 John 5:7 was not in the original manuscripts and has misled people about the chapter’s original meaning. Similarly, added texts can sometimes obscure the truth, such as the example where Yeshua didn’t actually say, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do."
Despite these issues, the central message is what truly matters: salvation is for all. It is a gift from our Heavenly Father, and we are called to repent and follow Yeshua’s example. Today, the confusion caused by so many differing interpretations has diluted the basic message. Even foundational truths, like the one true Sabbath, have been distorted and misunderstood, though I find them to be very clear in Scripture.
The Chosen is amazing, but remember, we are called to work out our salvation with fear and trembling. Don’t be disheartened if some things in the show aren’t perfect. The overall message is incredible and a blessing to many.

Your key words are "preach" and "contrary." The Chosen is a drama based on scripture. It doesn't preach.
There are movies that have used word for word presentations with actors reading exact Gospels. Try Matthew from the mid 1990s.
The Chosen is not an exact recital of a Gospel. It's a blend of them with character developing story lines that seek to give the audience a base to understand what drew people to start following Jesus in 21st century language. It is not contrary to the core storyline.
Before the very first scene of season 1, this is explained.
The Chosen gives context to Gospel explanations that most in 2024 will simply miss. Example: Compare a first century tax collector to today's IRS agent. Their goals and responsibilities are wildly different, yet they have the same job title.

When you say "free will" are you importing that idea from culture or getting it explicitly from Scripture? You'll recall that The Bible often refers to our will as being enslaved to sin.
Regarding God's foreknowledge, how are you defining that word? Do you mean that God looks down the corridors of time and sees events and therefore knows events?
The Biblical understanding of foreknowledge is to "know" beforehand; "know" in the intimate sense of the word (ginosko), whereas you may be using "know" in the general sense (oidas, to know of).

I was talking to my family about this scene last night and I actually told them "If anything, I would find it MORE strange if Jesus just watched Judas fall away and didn't care at all about him" and they said "Same! It would be unlike His nature to not care or want the best for Judas" It just makes no sense. Scripture says God desires for NO one to perish, and Jesus did pray for everyone, John 17 is dedicated to Jesus' prayer to the Father. Yes in John 17:12 He did say Judas was the only one who He lost as Scripture prophesied but it's not because He wanted him to or made him fall away, it's because Jesus knows the beginning from the end and knew what kind of decision Judas would ultimately make. In the way that I saw it, this section from the Bible doesn't refute that Jesus could have prayed for Judas before he got to that point.. He could've prayed for him earlier on but knew what choice he would ultimately make, and that's why in John 17 He said He lost Judas. So my family and I were scratching our heads at what was so controversial, it was a perfectly well made scene that showed Jesus' compassion for Judas, unlike other movies that made it seem like He didn't love him, which always made me sad, because Jesus' nature is to love, so it's not like He loved Peter who denied Him 3 times, but hated Judas, He loved both. He loved Judas despite knowing that he would betray Him. He even added "do what you came for, friend" in Matthew 26:50, a cutting remark to show Judas that they had a good relationship and he betrayed him just like that. And just because something isn't explicitly written in the Bible, it doesn't mean that it couldn't have happened. The Gospels are more of a summary than a word-for-word recording of everything that happened, John said if he wrote everything that Jesus did, there would never be enough space. So it wouldn't surprise me at all if in that unwritten part, Jesus prayed for Judas. In fact, the opposite would surprise me more. You guys did a perfect job portraying Jesus' loving nature that is not contingent on how the recipient acts. HE loves. And yes of course, Judas is still condemned because of his choice and for removing the chance to ask for forgiveness, but Jesus still loved him

With that being said, of course he would want to pray for someone he loved, it's the human thing to do. Attempting to explain his Divine nature is a slippery slope and best left to God [the Trinity]. I think people/critics just try to nitpick entirely too much. Misery loves company. The Chosen is designed to motivate people to dive into The Word. While it is based on Biblical truths and scripture, people need to open their Bible and find answers themselves. My 11 year old daughter LOVES this show sooo much and it was a catalyst that inspired her to dive into her Bible, to seek a close relationship with our Father and she professed her faith through baptism! We own all 4 seasons on blu-ray and we often rewatch them. New questions arise every time and we always refer to scripture. Thank you, Dallas, for your dedication & commitment to getting it right! The hard work that you & your team put into this is absolutely amazing. Your heart is true! We have shared The Chosen with our pastor and many members of our church family. It really helps to see people from our Bible “come to life” and to see that they were real people with real feelings and situations. I am a visual person and I am so thankful for The Chosen! God bless you, your family, & all of the cast & crew of The Chosen!

The scene was powerful. It showed how we can have a different agenda from God, and think we know best because we have certain skills, or outlook. Forgetting that our ways and thoughts are not His. The scene was played excellently. When Judas stood up, his offense had taken its final root. His words and actions after that spoke volumes. May none of us get to the place that we think we know more than God. May we always practice humility even when we don’t understand. Praise the Name of Jesus for all prayers and intercession He does on our behalf. And may we always side with His will.

In the story of 'The name of the Rose' there was a huge barney over whether Jesus owned the clothes he wore.
There was nearly a fist fight among high ranking clerics over this question.
Dallas, you're doing fantastic work and are loved for the wonderful thing you've done with 'The Chosen'. My church is showing an interest and we're having wonderful discussions about it. We're loving it, as it is, and whatever arguments arise they can't harm this work you're doing. Jesus will give you the answers you need, you can rely on that.

Oh Dallas! I am still on your side! I found the scene to be very moving, and PLAUSIBLE. I don't understand why all these people are so proud as to believe that they have solved 2000 years of debate, nor do I agree that you are heretical. As believers, we choose our theological camps, based on our FLAWED understanding of the Bible. That same pride has caused the many schisms in the Church. May you not be wounded by such landmines. God bless you for sticking your neck out for the Chosen. I love it.

Foreknowledge does not equal causation. Probably the hardest thing for human beings confined to space and time is to comprehend our God is outside of space and time. Sorry, but movies like back to the future, when mere humans can change the outcome of actual history is NOT realistic.
What we know is that Jesus is God. JESUS EXISTED in heaven with God before he condescended to become human for our sakes, pleading with the Father that if there is any other way for humans to be saved, let this cup pass, but if there is no other way, I submit to your (our) will... yes I know I took some creative license, but it actually shows that Jesus is the only way, and as gruesome as the crucifixion was, it was the only way to provide for our salvation!!
Just because Judas's acts were prophesied does NOT mean they were caused by God.

When Jesus asked Judas "Who has your heart? I want it" it broke me in pieces. I mean, Jesus gave us free will, we're allowed to choose what we want to do, the problem here isn't that Judas betrayed Him, because this was God's plan, but the problem is that he decided to take his own life bc he regretted what he did. For me, I saw Jesus's question not as he didn't want Judas to hand Him over to the Romans, bc this what Judas needed to do, but Jesus didn't want Judas to give his life and soul to the evil.
I think you did a great job in Judas and Jesus relationship, bc with The Chosen we can understand a bit what was Judas motivations

Jesus would have known Judas was going to kill himself. I can imagine, if nothing else, Jesus was pleading for Judas' life. If Judas had lived long enough for the resurrection, it's possible he could have been reconciled to Christ. Why are the critics so stirred up about Jesus praying for any of humanity??

From my perspective, I don't know that Judas ever stopped believing. It seems to me that his betrayal wasn't driven, necessarily, by unbelief but by a misguided belief that he was, in some way, helping the "revolution" that he (and many others) were expecting to take place at the coming of the Messiah. I don't think he believed Jesus would be killed. I think he believed Jesus would, ultimately, take "his rightful place" as King. But that's just my speculation, especially given his obvious regret of that betrayal afterwards.

Thank you for coming forward to have this conversation. It speaks to your integrity. However people want to feel about it, the Chosen show is a part of my salvation story and coming to God. People need to remember that all things work together for good to those that love the Lord; this show included. We are flawed, but God's will is not and He can do great things with anything. So however they feel about it, based on my newbie understanding, it is unbiblical to reject something that does so much good for the body of Christ. Thank you for inspiring me to read the bible. God bless you!
