There aren’t many singers, if any better than John with such great diction. You hear and understand ever word, to me that is very rare and welcomed and makes the listening pleasure so much more enjoyable.
Such a devastating desease for a singer. Mouth cancer. He had part of his jaw removed. But apparently is recovering well and is even singing again. The man is unstoppable ❤❤❤
The greatest male vocalist of all time. Such a great entertainer, gives so much love to his band and fans. John can and has sing in just about any genre, amazing vocal range, such agility in his voice and adapts his music from decade to decade. Epic.
So agree. I like many singers but not necessarily all their tracks. . But John is the only singers whose entire collection I love. Play his songs every day, many times. Jan. '24. UK. E❤
John is a born entertainer with such amazing vocal, stage and interactive skills with his audience and band members. I love the way he jumps up and down (reminds me of an excited child lol) which highlights what he is about to sing- as in "I'm not waiting any longer" (I think you were checking your gear at that very moment - it's always dangerous to look away even for a second with John, you never know what you might miss ;-) A change of pace; Listen to the Wind (LIVE of course!) I enjoy your reactions, great job!
Nice to see you react to John again! This concert tour was late 1990 to early 1991 I believe, so might be why there's a bit more wireless stuff. John was always open to embracing new stuff as well from all accounts - the camera mounted on the guitar that we see a shot from in this video was very new then too. John has often said that the only reason he did any of the other stuff - recording albums in the studio, doing interviews, going on TV etc. was all so that he could perform live on stage, as that's what he loved most in life. It really does show in his performances, I've never seen one where he is giving any less than 100%, even at the end of a 2.5 hour concert, he'll still give it everything (the live performance of Help! you watched was an encore for example). That's why we all love him so much, he's been such a generous and genuine person through his entire 5 decade career.
Thanks for the response Saan. You can clearly see his passion for performing in each and every live show I’ve watched at least. Man is an absolute legend. I wish I could have attended a show back in the day as I would have been screaming my ass off haha 🤘
Great reaction to our John, as always. I love how much admiration and respect you show for a master craftsman. I'd love to see you react to John singing 'When The War Is Over' from the Whispering Jack concert. He sings it with pure, raw emotion. It gives me goosebumps every time I watch it.
This song, which John Farnham co-wrote, is very meaningful to him. John was in the famous Australian Little River Band/LRB for some time. He joined after Glenn Shorrock left. There were politics, jealousy and pecking order in the band and some didn't like the fact that John liked to move around on stage and get the lime-light. In those days equipment was wired. Some taped down the microphone cord so John couldn't move. But this is the way John engages with the audience, so he ripped it up and kept moving. Here, John stumbles in a mocking of what happened, as the song is about trying to get out of the group as he'd had enough of some of their attitudes and actions. Some members of LRB followed him into his own band after he left LRB and are on stage with him here.
Australians have always been early adopters (or indeed designers) of new technologies. Radio mics, expensive and scarce, were being used on a live to air TV awards show (Logies) in 1983...one was dropped in rehearsal and there was a scramble to get it fixed/replaced in time for the show.
John was also a part of the Little River Band. There is a video of him leading them in a live version of Reminiscing. As always, his vocal acrobatics is amazing.
Oral (mouth) cancer, not throat cancer. Gaynor Wheatley says his vocal chords are unaffected, and his sons say he is singing around the house. It's been a gruelling time for John since August 2022 - reconstruction surgeries, (and more to come?), an emergency admission to hospital not many months after the cancer surgery. I believe his last public performance was in Feb 2022, just before covid lockdown, and he was still belting it out then in his early 70s. He is so loved by his fans, we all have our fingers crossed for a full recovery and a long and happy life with his family. Feb'24. UK. E ❤
Wi-Fi was invented in Australia - the main instigator, won the noble prize in physics. Quite a number of businesses including bands were using 2.4 GHz basic transmission at this time.
From the same concert you have reacted to here: Help - (I know you have reacted to his MSO concert which is great but..) is worth checking out also; John starts off singing the Beatles version then morphs into his slower, ballad version; Brilliant!
Wireless setups are earlier than you think. It was part of the early success of AC/DC in the mid 1970's. Angus was one of the first to use wireless connections for his guitar, along with KISS and ELO at a similar time. Wireless mics were claimed to have been developed by Schure in 1953, but schematics for home experimentation had been published in Popular Mechanics in 1947. Those early wireless mics were flaky and had very short range, but by the 1970's, transistorization had lead to better performance. Despite wireless instrument set-ups being put together in the mid-70's, it wasn't until the 1990's that they became common world wide. Perhaps because of the AC/DC history, they may have been adopted a little earlier in Australia. The country has had a history of electronic innovation and early adoption in media and entertainment.
John could in deed do it all, look for his covers of 'Black Dog' and 'I'ts a long way to the top' yes Led Zep and AC/DC unfortunately Black Dog is audio only as it was a sound check song they used, but the ausdio tch recorded it anyway.
I'm not tech minded and often anti tech.... .especially the stuff that doesnt work, like the internet and mobile computers ( phones ). But a lot of these " new " and not so new developments were invented in Australia. I know nothing about wireless microphones etc , but maybe we and John had them first ? I do know that Australia pioneered in car cameras for motor racing. Had to laugh at a NASCAR broadcast many years ago....... The commentary team were waxing lyrically about the technical brilliance of their own station team who invented the new in car cameras.......except they were on loan from Australia who invented them 2 years earlier for the Bathurst 1000, Australias greatest motor race. lol
