I've said it a thousand times, and I'll say it again: Considering how we're in an age of nothing but technology, if Disney re-released Treasure Planet in theatres, I GUARANTEE that it would make all the money it lost in it's initial run (perhaps even more). It would kinda be like the way Pinocchio was a bomb until it got re-released again. Sci-fi and futuristic settings are what's hot in the media now and, considering how a lot of the people who went to see Treasure Planet would (probably) have kids now, it would be a great way to introduce a new generation to the film and (hopefully) give us a franchise. That or just make the damn sequel already. It wasn't that nobody wanted to see it, they just picked a bad time to release the film (it was up against Lord of the Rings at the time).
Knowing Disney's relationship with sequels, we should be happy they cancelled it. But I do agree if they released it again, there would definitely be people in the theatres.
Treasure Planet is one of my personal favs from the last 20 years. I got a huge man crush on Silver right off the bat and even created a character right around that time inspired by him. If Disney released that movie today it would be received completely different, I don't think the world of pop culture was ready for Treasure Planet in 2002.
You left out one additional highly underrated element: the soundtrack. John Rzeznik captured the essence of Jim and converted it into song......without beating us over the head with obvious references and tie ins. You can listen to "I'm Still Here" without ever having seen Treasure Planet and understand Jim as a character. If you see the movie after, it enriches the meaning all the more. It's also an atypical theme to an atypical Disney film. While John Rzeznik isn't exactly "hard" rock, the song has a much heavier sound than the typical syrupy-pop feel of the signature song of a Disney movie.
Treasure Planet is probably the Disney film I've watched most! Whenever I went over my aunt's house as a kid, the only way she could keep me and my brother entertained was to stick a movie on and the only kids movie she had on VCR was Treasure Planet! Safe to say we were over there a lot. Definitely one of my Disney faves, I'm so sad that it's underrated, I can't understand why!
treasure planet is literally a childhood favorite for me, i was born in 1998 and i watched that movie so many times as a kid!!!!!! that and atlantis lol those two movies are very underrated disney films imo
I did see it in theaters when I was 7 and I just rewatched it on Hulu and I think I love it even more. It is in my humble opinion a flawless movie, perfect in my eyes🙆🙌⛄
my favorite disney movie ever is treasure planet, I'm sad it flopped, because as some who gose to Disneyland regularly I see nothing of it in the park and there should be something there with it.
This just reignited my love for Treasure Planet. I gotta rewatch it soon aaah it's SO good. & it might be the biggest animated Disney flop (tragically) but there are a plenty of live action Disney films that lost them more money
Like you said about Treasure Planet being a really underrated Disney film, like many Disney flops they just get sweeped under the rug. In stark contrast to heavily overrated and not-so-pioneering animated films like Frozen. Personally I think Treasure Planet is a huge work of art in terms of animation, thats what I love about this film
I remember watching it back in 2008 on my DVD player, it was awesome!! Although it kept freezing and I eventually gave up on it. Who would've thought 7 years later I'd finally finish it and love it!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I just saw treasure planet for the first time a couple of months ago because it was going off netflix so I decided to watch it...it was a wonderful decision!
mad timing- I watched treasure planet for the first time 2 days ago! It's been on my viewing list for ages, and it didn't disappoint! Can see why everyone loves it. :-)
I ABSOLUTELY LOVEEE TREASURE PLANET!! I am so happy I came acres your channel as we share similar passions, and yes i mean Disney! I love your videos and i am now looking forward to a marathon! Beauty and the Beast is my favourite and I saw your pin collection and fell. in. LOVE! Thanks Sarah for your amazing content!
+imSarahSnitch thank you for replying!!! That's so kind and I really do look forward to your videos Sarah!! How is the Pizza Planet replica going? It looked amazing!
I love Treasure Planet. I didn't see it until it came out on video (yes, I originally watched it on VHS) and I was just obsessed. And I listened to the Johnny Rzeznik song a lot.
Speaking of hella underrated, expensive-ass box office flops in the early 2000s... Ever see the Disney movie Dinosaur? Talk about your groundbreaking CGI; I'd say a lot of the visual effects hold up to this day. It was the same kind of realism that made Jurassic Park so famous and groundbreaking, but with a family-friendly story, entirely CGI characters, seamless, damn-near flawless integration of actual live-action background scenery and actual special effects like dust clouds, water splashes, and explosions. Nobody EVER remembers this movie, even though there's a popular attraction at Animal Kingdom, but its production is sooo fascinating! It's got a fantastic score as well, btw.
I still remember seeing this movie in theaters as a kid, I was soooooo excited and had to convince my parents to take me to a PG movie (I was 5 at the time).I was that little girl who was obsessed with space and adventure so this movie was great. and damn, that CG holds up a lot better than a lot of others especially since its blended so well with hand drawn animation.
Treasure Planet is definately one of my favourite Disney Movies of all time! I think I might go and watch it now! XD If you havenn't already, you should really do a Down To Disness for The Great Mouse Detective or The Rescuers Pretty PLEASEE!!
haven't seen it. I did not realize it was based on Treasure isle. the Disney treasure isle is just wonderful. one of my favorite. i'll have to check out this movie with the kiddies.
One of my favorite Disney movies. Even with the sci-fi look it follows the book's story beats wonderfully and maintains the book's sense of adventure. Also, as an old Dungeons and Dragons gamer I (as well as most of my gamer friends) know that Treasure Planet is as close as we'll get to seeing a Spelljammer movie.
Yes! Love this series! I would love for you to do the great mouse detective or Beauty and the Beast since it's coming out in live action. Thanks Sarah for a fun video.
I've always heard that Treasure Planet is totally underrated but when I tried to watch it a year or two ago I couldn't make it past the 20 minute mark. I just wasn't enjoying it, but now I really want to give it another shot!
My elementary school teacher took the entire class to go see this movie in theaters during school hours. It is one my absolute favorites. Also I had a morph bath toy they gave out at McDonald's.
you know I've read the book that was based off before titled Treasure Island and seen Treasure Planet on netflix before and it was okay! btw Jim Hawkins is loosely based off James Dean!
Hate to say it but Treasure Island had been to space twice before. First was the 1982 Bulgarian animated film "The Treasure Planet," with the next being the 1987 Italian/German live-action production "Treasure Island in Outer Space," though it was called in the original italian "Il Pianeta Del Tesoro" (meaning Treasure Planet).
I haven't watched this movie, but have heard of it. I guess I'll have to watch it now. Based on the time it was released I was at that teenage stage, sophmore, where animated movies were uncool and for little kids.
Thinking about it and all the live action films that are coming out, I really think that a live action Treasure Planet would be amazing to see. Treasure Planet was and is still one of my most favorite Disney movies, despite the rep that it gets. I think making it into a live action film could rekindle a lot of the magic that the fans over the years saw in it, as well as to mention that the technology in this day and age has developed to be so complex that a live action adaptation of this film could work well. Although that's my two cents. I'm so glad to hear that so many other people love the film as much as I did. The little five year old me is thrilled for sure.
i literally cannot remember anything about the movie besides the fact that i fell in love w/ the main character, but i do remember that its my favorite movie. my dvd got snapped in half, though.
Anyone know the status of the voice actors for treasure planet, you think they would come back and reprise their roles? Also I read that treasure planet two was in the process of being made but then got cancelled right after the opening weekend. What happened to the script for that? I read the story was actually already written. Couldn't they just take that and run with it?
I've said it a thousand times, and I'll say it again:
Considering how we're in an age of nothing but technology, if Disney re-released Treasure Planet in theatres, I GUARANTEE that it would make all the money it lost in it's initial run (perhaps even more). It would kinda be like the way Pinocchio was a bomb until it got re-released again.

That or just make the damn sequel already. It wasn't that nobody wanted to see it, they just picked a bad time to release the film (it was up against Lord of the Rings at the time).
Jennifer Haynes No, you got that right. It was just released at the wrong time and (I think,) the wrong era
+ZOMBGiEF I agree :)
I agree
+ZOMBGiEF Agreed!! =D
Do you think it would be a success if Treasure Planet was re-release in cinemas now with it's huge following?
I totally agree!!!!!!
Lisa Trudi YES PLEASE!
Lisa Trudi I would sooooo pay to watch that.
Best. Movie. Ever.
3D re-release, because of some of the digital scenes. Everyone would see a 3D movie.
Treasure Planet is so amazing. I love it!

Treasure Planet is in my top 5 Disney movies. I'm still in love with Jim.
You know, I know Treasure Planet's major pull is really just an aesthetic change but DAMN if it isn't it a cool aesthetic.
I really love this movie.

it has always been one of my favorites new era disney movies! i never understood why it never got the attention it well deserved.
treasure planet is literally a childhood favorite for me, i was born in 1998 and i watched that movie so many times as a kid!!!!!! that and atlantis lol those two movies are very underrated disney films imo

I did see it in theaters when I was 7 and I just rewatched it on Hulu and I think I love it even more. It is in my humble opinion a flawless movie, perfect in my eyes🙆🙌⛄
Literally almost screamed when I saw the video title. Hands down my favorite disney movie of all time.
my favorite disney movie ever is treasure planet, I'm sad it flopped, because as some who gose to Disneyland regularly I see nothing of it in the park and there should be something there with it.

Great Job Sarah! I would LOVE to see you do The Aristocats!
Treasure Planet would fit so well in the Kingdom Hearts universe it's not even funny
I WANT THIS IN KINGDOM HEARTS SO BADLY!
It was supposed to be in Dream Drop Distance, but the world was scrapped. They should definitely put it in one of the next games, though.
