About Us.
Byther Farm is a small organic homestead, being designed and managed using permaculture practices. We aim for self-sufficiency in fruit and vegetables for increased self reliance and better resilience to the modern world. I recognise that we are unlikely to be truly self sufficient, but do the best we can. I share our home with my loving husband, Mr J and our cat, Monty.
We are a fifty-something couple who live on a smallholding in Carmarthenshire, Wales. We are going green and creating a gentler, cleaner and more healthy life for our family.
Having had a highly successful smallholding in Monmouthshire, we hope to recreate the abundance at our new home. There will be a large organic kitchen garden with no dig gardening raised beds and young food forest in which to grown our fruit and vegetables.
We keep a few sheep and Aylesbury ducks.

A great workout and focused Famer will eventually get the best,,,,I really appreciate your Farming
You don't sound British!
What a heartwarming video. I bought 14 acres of grassland in Nth Cumbria in 2003, and dumped my job. It's been an arduous journey to single-handedly change it into woodland and a small veg garden with polytunnel over the years (planning authories, locals et al). I've finally got permission to build a few strawbale & cob guest dens too. Now I'm self sufficient in woodfuel and charcoal, and bottle/dry most of my food (I'm off grid and can't freeze) and wouldn't ever go back to my old life. If you're really going to do this with plenty of years to enjoy it, take that leap of faith and burn some bridges....don't leave it until you retire or you may never get there.
I love urs expression" 60 int s never late to change u Live" Bravo!!!
If 25% of World population start growing their food and contribute to local market, the World would be better place without hunger, poverty and misery. Surplus funds of Government will go to health care and infrastructure. Growing Food is the source of a healthy life, peace and prosperity. You are the inspiration for many of us.
I am 66 years old, I have 13 beds, and quite fruits trees. I canning everything is posible, I made the tomato sauce for a whole year, I only have 0.2 acres. I manage two crops every year! When I hear 👂 you talking remind myself so much. We bought the house in 2018 buy very little from the store. Love to see your animals! My concentration it was in microbiology too. LOL 😂!
I have a Planet of my „own“.
What crops?
@@vincentroberto7357 one crop in fall and one in spring! That’s two crops! North you have only one because of the snow, but south of U.S. is different.
@@izabelazielak8963 If your happy 😃 in your planet 🌏 more power to you. I am happy on mine, we have hurricane seasons, one time I was the only one prepared for the whole neighborhood, I was glad!! I think what happened in P. R. With the hurricane Maria, no one was prepared a lot of people die hungry!!
I am trying to find a place where I have shelter and be able to do my farming. Any suggestions?
i started a business growing herbs and seedlings when we moved to a small block here in nz. I was 55 and always had a veg garden of some sort.Gardening is the best mental health treatment available. My husband died suddenly just 4 months into the start of the business. I was very busy but very satisfied and I would not be mentally as good as I am now given various traumas in my life not least th sudden death of my husband and during lockdown here hss been my saviour. Nothing beat the taste of home grown
Yes future is respecting nature and getting back in sync with it.
So true
I hydroponically germinated 6 determinate cherry tomato plants. All 6 are different sizes ranging 1.6ft to 4.6ft and flowering...gotta luv nature
I’m in the middle of a life crisis….physically and emotionally. Our granddaughter died last year and because of inactivity and a knee injury I can no longer garden as I did. I want to garden again which I didn’t for the last year and now my physical issues seem insurmountable. I’m desperate to break out of this corner I’m boxed into and garden again. Right now I have to have a chair and cane. My dream is to find my way back…..🥺🥺🥺
Wishing you healing 💜
@@nickforster7712 thank you so very much.
I’m so sorry you’re having a difficult time. Gardening can be so therapeutic. Start small maybe some containers of herbs, etc. or a small raised bed until your strength and energy levels increase. Build up slowly. Best wishes to you. ❤️
You are an incredible women, your lifestyle is what i dream of.wishing you and your family long and healthy life,
That is so kind. Thank you. 😌
I love Saronne,s channel . She’s literally living my dream life with her beautiful garden, goats 🐐 🐑 sheep and chickens 🐓 . I just love her videos . She’s so down to earth and her videos are beautifully made . Thanks for adding this video 💖xx
Thank you Anna ❤️
We've known Saronne & Bob since they arrived in the area...I've learned so much from them about goats & growing, & we continue to share & learn each time we get to spend time with them. Their smallholding is a fraction the size of ours, yet they've accomplished ten times more with what they have. They are an inspiration!
Thank you Carol! We’re so pleased to have you and Tim as friends. ❤️
Couldn't say it better myself.
So many amazing people in the comments wow
🙂 getting ready to ret and move to a small house in a farm and grow my own vegetables, fruits and raise a couple of animals
Sounds lovely!
This is a great idea to Live organically and not relying on the supermarket.
Oh wow. What a dream! I am so inspired by this video! Less than half acre I have! But I am so ready and working on it! God bless! 🙏🏼
Thank you for watching!
Wow! You can make it. Good luck!
As someone who is nearing retirement and who has just quit my job as I couldn't take being a Corporate Hamster any longer, this is an absolute inspiration.
Nice!
I too started this over the age of 65 and what a blessing. We grow most of our meat, fruit trees are getting established and veges that we like. I have found myself more active and strong since leaving the job market.
Wonderful! 😊
Awesome. You have inspired me to fulfil my dream. New subbie from South Africa 🇿🇦
Quite a lot done since 2019! This was wonderful. And she is so witty and droll (I talked to the animals, and maybe it’s a good thing they can’t answer back)! Thanks!
Thanks, for reminding those of us that a over 60 that it’s still possible. Best of luck Dave... you can do this!
Enjoy watching, have a garden with vegetables and fruits its mydream for real
I think it would be a better Country with half the population we have now, and everyone had access to their own living and growing space. 21st century living could be living with the wonderful fruitfulness of Mother Earth combined with the global connection of the internet.
I like that beautiful garden plenty of edible plants
Thanks for introducing me to Sow, Grow and Cook.
Our pleasure!
Subbed to Sow Grow and Cook. Thanks Liz! Still locked down here in Melbourne. Been under a rock but getting excited about 2022.
Hello Liz
I can't tell you how timely this video is for me. I too am not young (66 and beginning to feel it!) and have never had a garden as such although I've always dreamed. I'm now buying a plot of land (only little, 1000m²) with 2 tiny derelict houses and hope to move in May next year. I live in NW Turkey and am on my own now but thankfully have some good friends who will help me when needed. There are moments when I think 'oh my word whatever have I done?' but this video along with yours and Huw's have really given me the encouragement to believe I can do it!
Sorry for the long missive. All the best
Davut (Dave)
Liz....please don't think I was implying that you're old. It's just that the lady on the video admitted to being in her 60s and it made me feel better!!!
Hi Dave. This made me chuckle! Some days I feel full of energy and about 30, while other days I feel every bit of my 60 ( something) years. Best wishes with your garden!
I am 72 and we have just moved to Oklahoma from Kansas and moved my container garden! You got this.
LOL, I didn't take it that way, but as I'm nearly 60, I think it's fair to say I'm pretty old!!
You can do it! I am over 70 and still expanding my gardens!
It's 1:36 am here in Louisiana and I just found your channel. my garden is my peace and confirmation I'm in the right direction...
I have to say you don't look 60. I have grown some of my veg thisyear and it tastes so much better looking to grow more next yearxx
Thank you! ( I’ll be 63 next birthday).
What a great harvest
Beautiful garden. Yes gardening is so rewarding. Like you I worked for the NHS Retired, and love growing, planting, etc. Thank you for sharing..Continue to enjoy
So nice of you 😃
Lovely to see a fellow Speech and Language Therapist following her dream.
Hi there! Wow another speechy! X
I can related what she's saying. before, when I live where there is this small plot of land I can grows, I grow so many vegetables, before sleep I always wishing morning would come sooner so I can get back to my garden again. I really missed those times a lot. Moving to new place, where no place for me to do gardening I really stressed out. Now I'm focusing on finding stuff that I can enjoy at this age now that I can't gardening by doing a lot of cooking and baking and knitting and sewing to fill my time and learning editing too but still searching for channels which do gardening like your. Love watching people enjoying gardening life like I do. Thank you for sharing. Now I added your channel to my favorite too so when I missed my garden I can get here and watching yours instead. 🥰
💚
I still have hope to live organically. 🙏. Like her. I still have to work and no land for project like this yet, hope I can get a small lot to start this one day. Now I am just growing season food in the back yard.
Growing in the backyard was something I did for several years. It was nice to be able to go out the back door and pick fresh herbs and salads. ❤️
Love that you are growing in the polytubes!!! That space could truly allow people to grow food for themselves regardless of space or climate. Thank you.
Thanks, yes it really is helpful
Love your idea of small garden ! 60 x 100 with two polytunnels !! what a luxury.
Love your way of life, sustainably.
Hand to heart: I want the life Saronne is living. I _will_ get there.
Nice to see your garden. Those who want to start homestead life should watch this.
Your message is very encouraging for all times God Bless you and all gardeners 🙏
It’s great to see someone living exactly the way they want. My husband and I want to purchase property on the countryside too. We are in our early 30s and like many commenters said, life is in the way but we will go for it anyway. Hopefully we are graced with many years of life to create a garden like yours with some animals too. Take care.
Best wishes to you both -and I hope you succeed!
Nadya Peña we have no problem 😉
What a wonderful video. I also like the interaction with the tomato picking. We also have such lovely chicken. Thanks 🙏
Lovely plot thanks for sharing.
Beautiful
i garden in my back garden and grow all year round im 71 and still going on but old knees are telling a bit now
What a great attitude.
Thank you 😊
Thanks for sharing Liz. Lovely vid! ❤
This lady is doing exactly what we did here in Queensland Australia, we were in our fifties brought ten acres 3 years ago and haven’t looked back just wish we’d done it earlier, good on you love, I will be subscribing to your channel 🪱🐝🌈😎
Hi Brian, I'm in Qld and in my fifties dreaming of doing this too. Just wish we could afford acreage to do it.
To Nicola: Hi, just want to encourage you to have you own garden, you don’t need acres to have some plants even if they are herbs. I hope you get you desired come through!
@@CH-hm8ud Hi, thanks for your comment but already do CH have a suburban block with vege beds, fruit trees, herbs, flowers etc and am a Patreon of Liz. Been gardening for years but would like to become more self sufficient on acreage like Brian but real estate where we live in Queensland is quite expensive.
@@nicolajj15 look at land at Wattle Camp Qld. 2.5 hours to Brissie Can get 5 acres for under 100k. close to Kingaroy with woollies, BCF, Bunnings, Big @ IGA, Harvey Norman. Hard land to live on but I am enjoying my journey into self sufficiency
Wheres good land in qld? The places that are even remotely "affordable" are gas fracked such as tara &/or completely unusable for homesteading.
I love it.
Saronne and Bob
Thanks. I enjoy what you are doing. I do some of your farming
My regret is that l didn't get started earlier. Nevertheless , l am seniorly active and love the outdoors.
I love to watch Bushradical . Continue to make your dream a reality.
My greatest joy is to eat what l have grown.
Thank you so much 😊
This is so inspiring. Im 68 and always wanted to live on a smallholding. But like you said, life gets in the way.
What an idyllic life style .
I agree I am trying to creat this lifestyle as well
So pleased for Saronne, she had a plot at our allotment, my ex work colleague In NHS, miss the chicken poop, so proud
Hey Winsum! Thanks for watching xx
Thank you for thus inspiring video. I am trying to work towards becoming self sufficient on my little piece of land.
Thank you and I hope you succeed!
I really enjoyed growing some of my own food and herbs for four years, prior to neighbours standing against it, trying to make a move now. My son stills remembers how I made my own pizza's for him when he was a child, lovely memories.
Nice to see Saronne and how fab the smallholding has come along. Cheers ladies!
Thank you Kerry. X
I've started 3 years ago when I was 27 let me tell you it took me two years to figure out why my tomato's weren't growing also finding the right varieties. It's also a lot of focus but I am so glad I know how to grow vegetables.
It was so delightful listening to your gardening life. That is something I would love to have. I’ve had very small gardens over the years but life gets in the way of what I would love to have. At the age of 78 I still have that dream. This summer I grew 20 tomato plants from seed. So delicious! I hope to start my seeds earlier next year and hopefully get to growing some veggies! Thanks for sharing! 💕
This proves it’s never too late to start! Thanks for sharing
💚
So enjoyed watching this. We started homesteading a few years ago. Love it
So encouraging. No, you're never too old to pursue goals. All the best ☺️
Just saw this and it made me SO HAPPY!! Thank you.
Thank you so much!
Love your message that it's never too late to start. I was a mediocre gardener before the pandemic, but lockdown gave me a chance to actually water my plants regularly and check in on them more often, and that made ALL the difference.
Your garden looks beautiful
Thank you!
Beautiful place!
That was cool to watch, Thankyou. I have now subscribed to Saronne's channel, it looks interesting.
I fell in love with everything you said 🥺🤔❤️
That’s so kind. Thank you.
Beautiful life.....😁😁
Absolutely beautiful! I love watching your videos 🙏🏽🌱💜🐞
Thanky soso murch 🙏🙏❤
Totally true. Many thanks from rural Ontario.
Well this is very much encouraging to me as I’m already 52 and still stuck in the city. I’ve dreamed of living on a farm my entire life, the scope of that “farm” has changed over the years but the dream is still a farm life. 🤞🏻
Thanks for sharing Liz,i will definitely head over to this channel.
I moved to the country at age 62. Wish I had done so sooner. Love it. Do not be afraid.
@@giancolabird awesome! I grew up in the country and have wanted to be be in a farm my entire adult life. Sadly, life got in the way. I can’t sell up yet, I have one son left at home and in school. He doesn’t share my dreams. Real estate is very expensive here(great for selling) so when I’m ready I will need to go quite far away. But fingers crossed 🤞🏻
@@bettinah.7429 same for me, I live in Sweden . I hope you can get your dream come true 💚
@@luluparl1245 thank you 💜
I am 23 and just moved in with family in the city and i prefer the city because there are many things to do. Country and small town life gets boring very quickly however I think people can bring nature to cities
Wow, blown away. 60x 100ft really?
That may be a conservative guess, but very impressive to start at 60yrs and get stuck right in:)
Best of luck to you
Good jobs lady 😘😘😘👍👍👍.
Thank you 😊
Amazing video if you ever want to come to the jungle amd help me set up a garden like yours wow I love it
I also want to pick those plenty ripe tomatoes
I love seeing how much Saronne and Bob have achieved in such a short time. And I love listening to her, too. Hers is one of my favorite channels to follow.
Thank you Rebekka ❤️
Great inspiring video Saronne, those tomatoes are insane.
Thanks Nicola. X
Wow 🤩 very inspiring video ☀️
Thanks for this beautifully captured and communicated video. It was like a meditation, so relaxing, and I found myself just wanting to bite into one of those tomatoes! What a beautiful garden.
What a lovely comment, thank you!
what a lovely woman
Love your gardens ❤️ nice 👍
I happen to see your vlog and am happy I did!!! will check out your other vlogs and see how you started your garden. We are retiring soon and will go back to our country and we plan to live in the province and start our whole life again!!!
I’m glad to find this new channel (to me!). Thank you, Liz, for sharing!
What a wonderful video! I was sitting here nodding in agreement with so much of what Saronne said but the word that stuck out most was 'purposeful' - I'm going to try and remember that next time somebody asks why I don't just go to the shops!
Very relatable for me as a mid-60s retiree very, very excited about my garden and what it’s growing for us. Herbs and easy vegetables first, but ever expanding choices to experiment with techniques. It’s really amusing to bring in what seems like a small harvest when I’m in the garden only to realize I’ve gotten a big load and I’d better get busy with cooking, preserving, drying, and sharing. Six acres is a much larger than we have, but we still have great abundance, and I’m very grateful, indeed.
Wow first time here. A lot of veggies
I love her garden and channel definitely life goals from our end :D
Thank u Liz, wow well done .....we are so determined to do this and our kids are exited.... we really day by day our hearts desire is doing similar.... such an encouragement.
Thank u again looking forward to more videos
I loves your speech about whats going on in the nature the way u explain really inspired me i totally agreed with ur words n advise..i wish i could make my own garden one day in rooftop as we live in the house with very limited space
If your roof is strong ( and flat) you could try growing a few vegetables in containers 😊
Thank you for that!!!
Beautiful and amazing! Thank you!
Good
Your garden is absolutely stunning! Loved this! 😍🙌🏻
Thank you so much
I’m a Speech Language Pathologist also! Aspirations of having my small acreage.
Yay for Speechies!!
Absolutely fabulous Saronne! Thank you Liz for making this video with her.
I’m in Alberta Canada & have the same dream 💗 We’ve converted a space into an indoor hydroponic garden to grow vegetables all your long. Even when it’s -40. It started as a homeschooling project but it’s turned into something bigger & we love it. Our tomato’s & cucumbers grow up the wall. We also grow from kitchen scraps.
I’m from Alberta too and always wondered how to grow food here given extreme winters. Good to hear you have made it possible!
Thanks Liz, I will now be following their channel as well!
Love watching Saronne’s videos 👏💜
Loved your video May you be God b
