Skydio 2 Autonomous Drone That Never Crashes!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 вер 2024
- We check out Skydio 2, the new autonomous drone that is the successor to one of our favorite products of last year. It's smaller, faster, and more powerful of a self-flying camera drone than the R1, but also somehow costs less. We head to Skydio's headquarters to take a look under hood of Skydio 2 and learn how the company designed this amazing drone!

We just got our review unit for Skydio 2 and are starting to test it! Full review forthcoming. What do you want to see us film with this drone?
YES!
Adam Savage’s Tested
Hey
Can you beat this?
ua-cam.com/video/j8-mg4li7lc/v-deo.html
I mean, can you make it better?
Maybe some lights, or something better than that...
Adam Savage’s Tested could you please try and film some BMXers at a skatepark please?
They’re usually smaller spacer and the movement to tricks speed will vary so I’d be curious to see how it copes with that and smaller places with multiple people around.
Really excited about this drone in the future.
The 360 avoidance system looks so good but I just wondered how well it will do around overhead cables as they can be tricky to see with human eyes let alone optical cameras. It looks like a fresh direction Skydio are taking, I really wish them the best.
The registration process...
Well.. thats a CEO who knows his product , from all points of view. Love his professionalism and innovative thrive.
I love that this is made in the US
Its innovative in the fact that its 2020 and the drone doesn't fold up!
@@Techgiant real the chip make in us?
@@Techgiant 😂😂😂😂
@@Techgiant Now that's obviously the important part here.
Wait. it's not even true.

Title: this drone never crashes
Me: Allow me to introduce myself
That is what Leo Laporte "The Tech Guy" says. He manages to crash every drone he buys.
As I write this, we have videos of the Skydio 2 crashing into a power line while chasing Ken Heron's motorcycle ( ua-cam.com/video/YCaMhBwMgHw/v-deo.html ) and into a lake while chasing Billy Kyle's car ( ua-cam.com/video/EspuKPWvfk4/v-deo.html ).
What wut be funny is if someone put the beacon for Skydio2 in a FPV free style quadcopter. Would love to see if it could follow in an entertaining way lol.
Dang I’ll have both once i get the Sky2
So... Santa... I’ve been really good this year.
-Nerf-Herder- I want to up vote twice. Once for the comment and once for your UA-cam tag name. Lol
Santa doesnt exist , but your bank acount will desapear after buying it 😂😂😂 (sorry for my english)
Riiiggght ! Me too!
Funny how many have hit powerlines in the last few months
When watching this I immediately thought of the way this kind of drone could benefit wildlife preservation causes: checking in on tagged animals without physically interrupting them, observing territories without ever disturbing the landscape, keeping an eye for illegal/poaching activity... This is amazing!
A little drone like this isn't going to have the flight time you need to do missions like that.
@@Plur307 The concept, not this specific drone. :)
Or big enough to put a stretcher on? 😉
@Jevon Frost Pardon? I’m not sure why you would want something like a stretcher for a drone for automated tasks.
I'm amazed on how professionally they approach development process. So futuristic approach too. Wish them success!
Well explained. It is rewarding to hear someone give a full back story with important facts about his product. No hype or sales. Love it. More inventors, owners and reps should follow his lead. Bravo. Going to buy one.
Glad to finally see some other people get these in their hands !
Cheaaa!
I need this to capture some view ropes
Fellow mushroom tip here.
"We bet the company that we'd be able to figure it out"
High risk, high reward.
I really like the attitude though.
Is funny because Elon Musk did the same risk with Space X, I guess it requires to take great risks to make great innovation.
gotta risk it to get the bisquit..
Hell yeah! Coverage by this channel is such a good thing for Skydio.
huyked 2000 extra nerd points for Norm!

He can trade it in for two Skydio 2s. ;)
Practically Everything I've learned about drones has come from this channel.
@@davidjordan2789
Nice. I've only started to have interest in quadcopters when the Skydio came into existence. Didn't want to crash a $1,000+ camera to the ground. I feel Skydio has one that's less likely to crash and burn a hole in my pockets. xD
I want to see how the 360 avoidance deals with overhead cables like phone lines etc. They might be tricky for the cameras and disastrous for the drone.
Get Schwifty I suppose as processing power gets more efficient and cheaper, computing thru millions and millions of pixels from a higher resolution camera would be able to pick up those high tension electrical cables. But I suppose we’re only limited to how fast we can process and compute calculations.
See the video from DC Rainmaker. He tested it in an environment full of branches and most of the time the drone has avoided it quite well. I think if they will be able to provide updates to it will be quite perfect avoiding even overhead cables.
Seen it fly through a forest, a few cables shouldn't be a problem.
Some dude literally ran through a forest and dodged stuff pretty well
@@hegeds It did have a crash but the thicket was mega thick and it tried to find a way out 2 to 3 times and auto corrected and "re-thought" the process, in the end there was not a clear path of escape and it tried the best path. It caught a branch about 12-14 feet up and bang. On a good note it survived and slew with no damage. It is not a product for me and what I do but very impressive 2nd gen tech.
Oh yeah, I'm on board. What a great company. Smart guys that have a clear vision and think outside the box. Just like the Tesla crew.
This would be so freaking cool for mountain biking
I like the fact that it's not made by dji , it's probably not something I could use without
having a personal tutor first. I get the feeling that I am not user friendly.
Wow. This guy know everything about the product. Love such kind of personal who work with Ground level people. All the best for your up coming products.
These guys are going to take this company in so many directions. This Drone Works amazingly well!!!!
Wow! I haven't been following drone tech closely... I had no idea it was this advanced! Impressive!
Am I the only one that thinks this thing would benefit from having a landing gear, to use it as a perched stationary camera?
It seems like an obvious security application: fly over this roof, land on it and synchronize with the other perched drones in the area for instant static surveillance of the perimeter.
Most flat roofs have a raised edge around them much taller than the drone. Most residential roofs are far too slanted to land on. In the USA I would imagine maybe 10% of roofs are capable of being landed on with a small drone like this and seeing anything.
You'd also have to account for battery life.
@@Plur307 Not sure how necessary it is, but I do feel like there's something there. What I imagine is a couple pairs of spikes. They could be very cheap and lightweight, perhaps even retractable, and would be ideal for landing on most shingled roofs. Wouldn't even need to be sharp enough to risk puncture or scrape damage, and could be easily replaceable after wear. With the size of the unit, I can see it being nimble enough to land on ledges (such as those surrounding flat roofs), that are narrower than the unit itself.
Definitely not the only one thinking about these for security use.
@@JD2jr. I imagine that with their automatic docking stations, this would come as an "event mode" that you can trigger with movement sensors around a building, or schedule around a specific time, if you are expecting a VIP. In any case, the battery life of a perched drone is longer that one in fly-by.
I can hear my dji phantom 3 STANDARD crying in the storage room
It is
old tech. That's normal
😂
Looking at the video on their website, the video is very pixelated. It looks to me like the camera is not great, especially in bright sunlight, which is when you would be using the camera. It might just be the video compression they used, but I'd be interested in taking a look at this. The rest of this is pretty amazing as far as the tracking goes.
You judge how good the camera on a drone by the video on UA-cam?
@@knife-wieldingspidergod5059 No. I went to their website where they uploaded it directly. And it does look pixelated. Could be a compression problem due to the limitations of the site they downloaded to. I would love to see some real world testing or get my hands on a test model and test this for myself.
Saw Prometheus in 2012, thought those 3D mapping drones are coming soon.. Yrs later used Matterport a lot and thought if that software can be combined with a drone...
Seems like a consumer version of a fully automated mapping drone is not that far out. Could be a big thing in real estate.
wow i feel so lucky to be living in this day and age! just WOW!! Phenominal!
I really admire those guys who have unlimited genius to create so many future-oriented products. Thoughts change the world!
Love the in-depth background that isn't just about the pretty pictures and not crashing.
I myself prefer the FPV experience i have yet to find a hobby that gives me the feeling of flight the way fpv does but i do think what these guys are doing is awesome i mean its pretty amazing to have a cinematic drone able to do the things this drone does..pretty awesome..
It's ment for activities that don't let you fly it by hand or even think of it flying around you.
I was amazed to drone Skydio 2, a new discovery in the world game of drones that can provide all what is desired by the pilot and make it easy for beginners though. I congratulate the team who have tried to provide all the conveniences in the world of drone games. Good luck and continue to be the leader in the future. I could only see and admire the products Skydio 2 through youtube, hopefully in the future I could have Skydio drones. thank you very much.
Having the props on the underside at the front is going to make hand landings quite dangerous. Maybe not generally a problem - but I watch several sailing channels where launching/landing from a boat is currently impossible without having a crew member catching the drone for landing (tiny market, I know). Maybe they'll have options for protectors for the front props at some point or maybe autonomous landing targets that can be placed on a moving platform, like a boat, that remove the need for manual intervention.
You could get something 3D printed. They might do optional extras for it in the future.
Just got my skydio and it's amazing! Crazy drone videos here we come!
yeah...make some videos to see how 4K and gimbal works!
Oh, hey there!
Oh, hey there ! How did this go?
Shalaco hey! Hope you’re doing well 👋
Glad to see the progression of Skydio is so positive,
Not only is it cool tech, but it looks absolutely amazing. It’s sleek, clean, and modern.
Unbelievable for under $1000. It's nice to see this. So many times you watch one of these amazing products videos and they are so ridiculously expensive nobody will ever buy them.
I find what the drone sees to be rather creepy in a way. Very interesting tech though. Lots of improvements over the first model.
Garrison64 Why do you think it looks creepy? Don’t all drones & foam planes look creepy? 😂
@@pricelessppp The simulated sight, not the drone itself
Best vlog on Skydio 2 ✅🙏🏼👍🏼
Can't wait to see someone do a snowboard slopestyle run with this drone on follow. Curious if it will be able to keep up.
It only does 36 mph. A quick run down a hill will leave it behind.
I've seen videos of this drone where people are deep in the woods and the drone does not crash. It is really impressive. I would never do that with my DJI mavic pro. Never! This drone is a real game changer!
The CEO looks like a wonderful person and a great future awaits the Skydio Company
Love this. Terminator HKs are comming!
Damn I love this so much! Stuff like this inspire me to keep on learning programming and get into a university for Computer science
When are we getting the full hands-on review?
Hehe, sometimes I can be so blind. I kept thinking "what does this guy on a scooter have to do with the drone"? Finally.....my 2nd brain cell came on line.
I was looking for my phone while holding my phone an early morning last week. We all have those moments 😂
Very forward thinking going on at this company. Thanks for the tour Norm!👍
Pre ordered, 2020 will be interesting
That segment where they showed the 3D map generated by the drone's cameras (17:45 - 18:25) reminded me of that scene in Prometheus, where they send the little drones out to map the corridors of the alien vessel.
Great video. It got me convinced and now I want one.
All the DJI modders be lol'ing
really nice design, the beacon feature looks amazing
1000 dollars is actually a fair price for a drone like that .
It's a steal, tbh
If you can fly it at night. No night videos. Just day 🤦🏽♂️
Unfortunately it’s NOT ONLY $1000 it’s at least 1150$ because you need the controller at least and if you want to have the USP of this self flying autonomous drone you will need the beacon. So you need both items to use it and that is $1300 and to have an almost equal flying time you’ll need also at least the value of half of a battery , that’s $1350 to have a specific advantage in comparison to a MAVIC . If you compare , camera less good, flying time a lot less, at the moment still some software problems, a lot less good controller. So everyone can make his choice for this , but the price difference to a mavic pro 2 is now shrinked to $350! $1000 price comparison is only for people who can not calculate or can not compare well enough.
@@InvincibleStormFilms FAA sets drone rules. Not the company.
@Zane Zuccaro u serious???
This is the future of drones!
Security applications could work great! Lock-on to a suspect and this drone can follow him wherever he goes relaying position and video feed to first responders. Airports, outdoor events, etc. Endless possibilities. Great work guys!
for 30 minutes !
What's the price, gents, and where to order?I need it to integrate it to covert surveillance van project we finished works on 2nd generation. Kindly ask you for contact for cooperation discussion if it might be interesting for you. The best option could be Black Hornet...but it is critically expensive...
I saw a few nice spots in the video I like to camp at in my home made camper and have one of these super cool drones to play with while camping
OK, so I really want the bird's nest/ automated drone house/launch thingy to be added as an accessory! BTW when is mine shipping?
Technology in another level that's really nice probably one of the best drones out there
I love to watch a show like this one, learning something new every time and it is nice to see all the great engineers out there.
My problem with the Skydio was that the video quality didn't look very good compared to a DJI Mavic or GoPro... there seemed to be a ton of compression. Also the movement was pretty herky-jerky.
this is not 4k. i did notice the lateral judder and ghosting. havent seen that on the other videos so far. dont know why anyone wouldnt shoot 4k these days.
@@formattester6 why do you think people need to shoot 4k? Most people don't have 4k tvs or computers that can handle editing 4k footage... When I shoot I typically shoot everything in 4k and downscale it to 1080.
@@c0pyimitati0n why shoot 4k? because it looks way better than 1080. i do video production for a living so its obvious why i want the best IQ. for someone that just wants their activities recorded and can live with 1080 not looking so good then there is nothing wrong with that. another thing to do is shoot in 4k and on ingest convert right away to 1080. it will look infinitely better than actually shooting native in 1080. still not of these drone shoot worth a shit in 1080 imo.
That's absolutely phenomenal!👍
So nice to see a product that isn't made in China! Welll done, guys. Looking forward to purchasing my own.

Great to see American drones that are looking better than the China comp , looking forward to my skidio 2 when production picks up
I believe the Skydio will get better and better!
They drastically underestimated demand. In batch 2 from November. Still waiting. I’m starting to consider waiting for S3 at this point. I’d hate to get an S2 a few months before S3 is announced. However S2 is likely to improve through software before S3. I can see S3 being better with thin branches and power lines due to higher res cameras, better at low light flight, and maybe they will add addition emergency sensor types to eliminate certain types of crashes like reflective surfaces like still water at mirrored building glass in cities.
The more he talked about it the more the price went up in my head.
Very fair to share the steps of prototyping the Skydio 2 with so much explanations !!! Thanks a lot, very interesting. Not a lot of developper would do this!!! Very nice drone and incredibles performances, hope they will keep going that way :)!
What an incredible company
People...were now living in the future. Awesome
That is an impressive drone!!!!
This company will be acquired in the next six months
Peter Johnston nooooo, it better not be!🥺
Awesome and good luck with the Skydio 2 Autonomous Drone
This guy knows what he's doing. wow
The 2nd gen seems great and definitely on my list of drones to consider vs another DJI product... But I feel like version 1 was a proof of concept, 2 is the application of those lessons learned, and 3 - hopefully with better funding, will be the first landmark product that will check all the boxes for cinema and recreational use - If they came out with a Professional line of products that'd be awesome too, but probably not in their current line up. Skydio as a company is on my wait and see list for the time being, but it shows a lot of promise!
I'm in pre-order batch 3, and every video I see is agony as I count down the months.
I'm in batch 4 , it will be my first drone but I don't wanna wait so long 😭 I really wanted one soon not in half a year 💔
Batch 5
Back in the old days when there's more than 1 camera in 1 device it's looks weird but nowadays when there's more than 1 camera in 1 device no matter if it has 9 camera it's look fasinating.
I hope the Interior Department buys a bunch of Skydio drones.
Looks promising, the image quality is unusable for professional work and the Mavic beats it by a lot, but hopefully they'll catch up.
I'm surprised they didn't show 4K60 since specs say it shoots 4K60. This tested video is only 1080p. =/
@@TechInspected Yeah that's weird, but there are many factors that contribute to image quality and it's not just resolution, dynamic range, color rendition, highlight rolloff... But hey, it's just the beginning, maybe in the coming years it will reach DJI quality.
mavic 2 crashes in tree branches . skydio 2 is way better then the mavic 2 in follow me
It's something I really want to have a drone. While drawing pictures, they are watching images of drones. Oh, I want to have it.
Man, I might have to get one of these.
That dude is a full freak 😵 I love him 😊
Lol the one that scene where your testing it if it will crash and you are running 3:55
definitly me trying to crash it HAHAHA
Skydio just consider the primo buyer of its Skydio R1 like pidgins because this model was sold 2400$ and one year later, they produce a second version for 999$.
Now to make it quite so you can use it on a movie set. Very hard to filter out the drone motor noise. Make a noiseless blade and you'll have a winner
Impressive design + tech, well done
It's not a easy to do thing of course, Physically I believe the extensions could be curled inwards down like a claw machine so they aren't judded strait out, then the propeller could be attatched on the inside at the farthest point toward the base of the device maybe on a swivel for ease of motion/rotation (inwards) & can have a small light plyable material halo wrapping them so the propellers aren't swinging on the exterior. Could be a more compact design tenisball size version of this the actual arodynamics of the design would have to be tested. A landing dock would be cool addition & would have to be automated or even a bag could be made with a spot for ease of attatchment for the dock in the bag & drone as Well as unattachement or launch of the drone. With wireless chi charging usb type C specs.
Probably for the R3 version idea or the start of one less than.. Or a version way down the line.
Lol.. More ideas just sitting here wasting away, young, broke & impatient, resoursless, in need of a good lab..
I really love your interview with the skydio co-founder but I think you forgot to ask this important question, which is: How do they intend to match-up supply for the high demand of this drone with this small factory that they have. I feel like the demand for this drone in 2020 is going to shoot-up even more and what are they doing to meet-up with the high demand of their customers?
So impressive this Copter, i need one!
please make something like this not only for video and photo but : day and night home security system. something between a Get Piper Camera Alarm and a drone. that would be awesome to use it in a foreign country as well and less than 300gr.
This is fantastic! I had never heard of Skydio until I heard about it today on Bret Tkacs' motor cycle instruction channel. I found this video so that I could find out more about the company, and the product. Very interesting stuff!
I just checked the pricing on the Skydio website. Looking at where the competition has been, from a pricing standpoint, I think that Skydio is giving quite a lot of value per dollar.
Scene where the cop climbs out the car and drones pop of the roof of the car and starts following him comes to mind
their 3d mapping is super impressive.
Guys it can and does crash so don't say never. There's a video posted just a day or two ago that clearly shows this drone had crashed. It was questioned if it was pilot error but it lost signal at a short distance and crashed. Although I believe it is unlikely to crash. This all said it's a cool drone and glad to hear they added telemetry to the screen.
wonder how it would handle snow, in mountains :)) something tells me it should crash in cloudy winter, awesome products though !
I will get the Skydio and the Mavic 3 next year . I believe that they’re two different types of drones and for different situations.
Dyanmic range is lacking heavily but I can't wait for the second gen
3rd gen u mean
I absolutely love this drone idea and want one,the only small thing I wish it had was like folding arms or some type of smaller form factor to make it perfect,at least for me that is
wanna be friends?
Question for Adam: the tether feature A-B is this in a straight line ? Would it be possible to have a feature where you fly a sequence say, along the side of a road with a long sweeping curve, then fly up to a spotlight position. Save the sequence and get the drone to repeat it ?
In effect pre programming a cinematic sequence.
I agree - A string of more than two waypoints, or a curve/arc/spline would be a good expansion of the capability.
I'm guessing that would actually be very simple to do, just not simple to explain in the video. =)
Just looked at the website and the transmitter is a $150.00 purchase plus the $999.00 price tag on the drone. Seems like a bit of a stretch but why not just price it out at $1149.00 and include the controller because a lot of people will be ordering without a controller by mistake.
Imagine multiple of these filming a single subject. That way you get many views and you wont miss the angle you want.
Intense development on the software side to enable affordable hardware for the consumer. It's honestly incredible what they have achieved here, some of the bigger tech companies should take note!
Skydio 1 was pretty good but this one looks like a really good autonomous drone with a very accessible price.
I'll definitely be getting one or one of its successors.
'never crashes', bold statement.
But it made you click, wasn't it?
