  • Los Angeles is often identified with Hollywood, but there's more to the entertainment industry than its facade of movie stars and blockbuster films. This episode explores the career of Lois Weber, a filmmaker who rose to greatness in a nascent film industry that welcomed women into creative leadership positions; as well as a Central Casting Bureau that capitalized on the city's segregated ethnic enclaves when filling background roles.
    00:00 - 01:01 Introduction
01:01 - 12:45 When Women Called the Shots
    12:45 - 23:00 Central Casting
    23:00 - 23:10 Conclusion
    23:10 - 23:47 Credits

Fascinating history. These episodes are both educational and entertaining. They bring us into the times and places that some of us were familiar with, but many others weren't, and fill in the missing background. Thank you for creating these.

This is a wonderful story and a great addition to the history of Los Angeles. KCET and the filmmakers have done a wonderful service to the city and it's people in preserving and documenting the history of the area.

It's nice to watch this segment after seeing the all asian cast film Crazy Rich Asians because at least some new progress has been made and been successful. I wish the segment on race in Hollywood could have also included the American Indian stereotypes in Western movies with some commentary on how that affected the image of Indians.

Progress with gender and racial equality in the U.S. is steady but so, so very slow. This video is one example of the human tenacity that is needed to make even incremental progress at all over the course of a lifetime.

Pitch: streaming tv series: early Hollywood focusing on(now erased)women producers/directors and (now erased)minority communities.
4 story lines which often converge: powerful woman and her fam (or none), Asian family, AA family, Mexican (Native Californian) family.

I wish you would preface titles with "Lost L.A." as you can't tell which series is which and your playlist for Lost L.A. is contaminated with other series videos.

When movies made in China and Japan are filled with Asians nobody ever complains about the lack of diversity.

Nice 'whataboutism.' Count on a trumptard to ignorantly compare two completely different scenarios in order make some sort of half-baked point. This is about as intelligent as conversations on the right are nowadays.

Gee, I came here for some classic history of LA and got nothing but constant bombardment of social justice issues. Christ people stop seeing everything through the lens of injustice and race and simply talk about history without a fucking slant one way or another.
