Good Morning Sir Matt, The Moody Blue Colors are amazing, I Love this Fly, I'm about 70% settled in at the new house and next week I hope to get my fly tying station back on line. man do I miss tying. Thank You once again Sir Matt, until next time my friend CHEERS 🙂
Great fun pattern and I absolutely love the color combination! As always, THANK YOU for preserving and showcasing the rich history of fly tying & fly fishing.
Totally love that color combination. Very nice streamer. I can see minor adjustments, then putting it in front of Smallmouth and Pike. Great video Matt. You know how to start a new week. Impressive job buddy. Thank you.
Hey Matt! I like this fly because blue is my favorite color, and I think the fish will like it too. Cool pattern, thanks for sharing, have a great day. 😀
Hey Maaaaatt good morning ☕️☕️ Beautiful Steelhead fly! Hummmmmm….. if I had a ban that would be a good name for it 🤣🤣🤣 This cold weather just won’t let go🧐 Any way you take care and thanks for this morning’s bug👍
No kidding about this cold weather! We got an inch of snow here at the farm on Monday. And yesterday was too cold to do much outside. I have been out in the fields turkey hunting this morning and am about to head back out. I've seen plenty but haven't called any close enough yet. Maye this afternoon. :-)
Good morning Matt. Enjoying my ☕️ and watching you tie a streamer. Great way to start the day. I sure like the colors in that fly. The colors in some steelhead patterns sure look good. Well the sun is coming up here and it looks to be a dandy day. Take care Matt.
Thanks John! I thought about you with the inch of snow we got here Monday. And yesterday was too cold to do anything outside but it's almost back to normal today. I've been out turkey hunting all morning. I've seen a lot but haven't called any in close enough yet. I've still got a few days to bag one of these big gobblers. :-)
@@SavageFlies We got about 5-6” of the white stuff last night and into today. Hope this is the last of it for the year. We are supposed to be above freezing during the day starting tomorrow.
Nice colors for Salmon River ,NY steelhead. I will tie a few of these for my trip up in the autumn. Thanks again for presenting another great fly and a great session.
For some reason I'm really attracted to that fly I think it's beautiful. Down here in the Kentucky River I think I'll tie it smaller and use it as a bass fly. Good job Matt thanks for what you do great channel I watch every video. Blessings Luke oh by the way I'm loving those vests and sweaters. Your friend Luke Wilmore Kentucky
Thank you Luke! I think this style of fly, in several colors will be a great bass fly. Smallmouth or largemouth! Thanks for the note and kind words my friend. Have a great week!
Good morning sir Matt. Thank you for sharing this pattern. I will definitely tie a few of these to fish for some steelhead here on Salmon River. May even listen to some Moody Blues while tying them lol. Have a great day and stay safe my friend.
Ha! That is a classic song Karl. Speaking of the Salmon River, Ed M. just said the same thing in a comment. Of course there are two famous Salmon Rivers... New York, and where is the other one? Idaho maybe?
Good Tuesday morning to ya Matt! Really nice looking streamer! Going to have to source some colored saddle hackle. I've always leaned towards the natural and earth toned hackles. You always bring something new. And as always, thanks for saving another forgotten fly. Those are always fun!
This is a very fun looking pattern. I love the colors! I’ve not done any steelhead patterns. So this could be a definite try! Thank you Matt! Have a great week!
A few years ago when living in Oregon USA, looking into winter steelhead flies to learn how to make I came across flies like this in colors like Purple & Pink, Black & Purple , Black & Pink,, Chatruese & black, bright blue and black and the list goes on & on. I really like the sparsness and delicate look about these flies. I used them at the bottom of the Columbia River for Coho and they worked a treat.. If I remember rightly sometimes I only used 1 Hackle feather and then 2 colors of Ostrich combined in a dubbing loop. The ostrich flows great in the water I think, & the hackle was just to hold it up. Thank you for tying this fly, Brings back fun memories..
Thanks Maurice! I appreciate this great comment. That does sounds like some great memories. I also see a lot in this style in reds, yellows and oranges.
Gee that could also be called a Purple Haze but I tended to like Moody Blues music a little more than Jimmy Hendrix so I’ll go with it. That looks like a killer steelhead fly. Thanks Matt
This is a great pattern and nicely tied. I tied these also with a pink dubbing and pink then purple hackles, the same with chartreuse and black. I've caught many steelhead and salmon with this combination. Thanks Matt for sharing.
Thanks Layton. I've seen a lot of orange/yellow steelhead patterns of this style too. If I recall the blues/purples are for summer or fall runs, and the orange/yellows are for winter steelhead? I'm not sure if that's right, or what the difference really is. I just need to get up your way to give it a try. :-)
If nothing else, it;'a gorgeous fly. We donlt have steelheads in Australia, but it would be fine for our bass and other native fish (cod and native perch of various species). Also brown trout of course. :-) I'll try and tie one and see how it goes. :-)
Beautiful pattern, awesome band, sexy song. Well done Matt! The first one you showed won the "blue ribbon" :o) Good pattern for low light / dark or deep water. Classic Winters Hope hackle colors, Spade style construction like Alec Jackson's patterns - less is more theme. Did the book give a time line on the pattern? Many of the "intruder style" patterns are tied like soft hackles, the hackles propped up with a "thorax", imho. Thanks Matt, awesome video. If you bag a "Tom" use the gorgeous body feathers to hackle a fly like this. Last month one walked next to my house, and I've heard gobbles the past week or so :o) You may have to use 2 or 3 feathers, you only get a couple of wraps per feather - that was the case with the feathers I had. Winter won't leave! White Easter morning, Nor' Easter today with 1" to 10" of heavy wet snow. Hope all is well with you! 🤓👍
Thanks Joe! No real history on the pattern, which is a shame because it's bound to have some kind of story behind it. I mean, was Moody Blue a common term before the band? Or was this fly most likely named after the band was famous? Now I'm going to have to research Alec Jackson's patterns. And oh, speaking of turkey hunting... nothing yet. It snowed here on Monday, yesterday was cold and drizzly so I went shopping in town with the wife. But I have been out hunting all morning. I've seen plenty but haven't been able to call any in close enough yet. Oh well. I've got a couple more days of trying. :-)
Thank you for sharing this pattern. I've recently started tying flies, and was wondering if you could do a video on a beginner friendly pattern that uses pigeon feathers .
Vary cool 😎 I like the colors of this Pattern some of my favorite flys are salon and steel head flys and like you I could see this with a yellow and red color mix like a sun burst color or like a rusted rat fly any way thank you for your time sir
You got that right Charlie! I think the river smallmouth around here would love this thing with some red/yellow, or red/white. Thanks for the note and have a great week my friend!
@@SavageFlies most definitely i fish the James River here in va the small mouth bass would love that red and yellow color and they hit hard on some salmon flys
This looks similar to a bright green insect we keep seeing down by the river in my area. That’s a great looking fly. I like your “coffee grinder” yarn. We may have to start dyeing the dryer lint we save (for campfire starting kits) and use it to make dubbing. Thank you for tying this one for us.
What’s not to like? It’s a very attractive fly, love the band, & likely effective, especially if there are smelt or similar baitfish around. What’s next? Deep Purple?
Great pattern Matt. I just started fishing the steelhead run here in SE Wisconsin. Using egg patterns but I will give this one a try. Maybe a week or too left in the spring run. Thanks Matt!
Wow my favorite music group and a familiar fly. This looks a lot like a fly we used in northern Cal for steelhead called the silver doctor. There we’re many variations but we tied them in blue and black on a # 4 heavy .Thank you for sharing.
Oh yeah Fredrick, the Silver Doctor is a pretty famous fly! It's a bit complex so I've never tried one for the channel but it's always been on my to-do-someday list. :-)
The colors are gorgeous looking. I think that color scheme would be great for a bass jig or streamer Thanks for the video Matt. Is that a new bobbin holder?
It is Rollin. It's the Wishbone, created by a guy who designs and makes surgical equipment. I've been playing around with it and plan to do a review here pretty soon. (I've just been out for the last couple of weekends so no Sunday reviews recently.)

Thanks Matt another nice one. Definitely adding this to my list. Have a blessed day my friend.
Thank you! I appreciate you watching my friend. :-)
I shown this vid to our local Lake Erie steelheads in the Ashtabula River, Matt... They approve... 🤣
Ha! Thanks Randy. I've got to make a trip up to Lake Erie someday for the famous steelhead runs. :-)
Looks great man do you think you could do a pattern that uses squirrel tail?
If I get back to Erie this fall, that one will be going with me. Thanks for sharing, Matt.
Oh yeah! Ya'll keep telling me there are some great steelhead runs in New York and Michigan. I've just got to make it up there someday. :-)
Great fun pattern and I absolutely love the color combination! As always, THANK YOU for preserving and showcasing the rich history of fly tying & fly fishing.

Thank you Yvon! I appreciate you watching my friend. :-)
I like that color scheme. Definitely a great color combination for bass. I was hoping for some background music by the Moody Blues on this tie. lol
great name and pattern matt. love the colors in this one. thanks matt see ya joe. have a great week.
Good Morning Matt. I really like that you are not tied tying a specific group of flies. Your encouragement helps us to want to expand our horizons.
One of favorite groups in 70s. Listened to them doing college studies and to help get to sleep. Memories!!
Nice fly Matt!!

Hey Matt as with many of your flies I was inspired to shrink this one to panfish size using materials I had available. Thanks for another cool fly
Very nice looking fly. Well tied and explained. Thank you for sharing.
Yes that is a wonderful steelhead fly and with the intruder trend it has become a thing of the past.
Good day matt! Nice streamer pattern.you sure find spme good looking patterns.very nice job.
