My best childhood friend had several uncles, aunts, and several cousins. Thirty-five years later, she's the last one standing except for an aunt who moved out of the community early on.
Sad!Even worse, this reign of terror was implemented in all predominantly black communities. I watched as my grandmother began locking her front door as he neighborhood began to deteriorate in 1989. We still talk about it today. It was heartbreaking to see a once vibrant neighborhood and community destroyed. Neighbors died or moved. My grandmother sold her home in order to escape. A home where she raised her children and older grandchildren such as myself. The neighborhood is now being gentrified as its prime real estate.
