My favorite thing about your reviews is seeing you pick apart both why you didn’t enjoy certain books but also why you liked others! I started a reading journal and I realized that turning a critical eye on the books I read makes the whole experience far more enjoyable for me. It’s like... it turns me from being a media consumer to a participant? Like I’m actually having a conversation with the author and the ideas they explore. And Jane Austen is a treasure, for me the yearly read is Persuasion. That book is the literary manifestation of my happy place.
Oh my god, this is so nice, thank you! And yes!! This is what I try to explain about how I get so much out of the whole experience of reviewing, whether or not I liked the book! I didn't read Persuasion until I was in my mid-20's and I think it made me immediately like and relate to Anne Elliot in a different way. She is a gem and I love her and she deserves THE WORLD.
I love how you talked about Pride and Prejudice! I have also been reading and rereading it since I was a freshman in high school. And I often still get the "oh of course" response to it being my favorite book. But I just love it so much. And it got me through so much. It always makes me so happy hearing someone else who understands how fantastic of an author she really was.
Yes for sure! People tend to downplay how good these books are, but there is a reason they are enduring and beloved. They are well crafted stories with lots of wit and sass and of course romance. We love to see it.
I read The Hobbit first as a preteen, and that made it easy to love the series. I so envy you the Folio editions. :D And P&P is one of my top 10 favorites of all time.
Omg you love His Dark Materials !? ME TOO, I read them for the first time last year, I love Lyra and Will so much 😩. Those editions are stunning 😍🤩 also, I love the blue eyeliner
I’m currently re reading American Gods and for the first time I’m listening to it on audiobook. The 10 year anniversary version with full cast is really great!
I read Pride and Prejudice for the first time last year and absolutely loved it, have been making my way through Austen's other books slowly but surely since. It's interesting that you're a big Persuasion fan because that's the one I seem to hear about the least - excited to get to it! I also would never have had you down as a Lord of the Rings fan! You learn something new every day 😸
I’m so happy you loved it! And yes Persuasion is underloved, as far as Austen goes. I didn’t read that until I was in my mid-20’s but Anne Elliot just resonated so much with me then. Her fears of having lost her chance, her desire to be useful, how capable and live she is? All delightful. I hope you enjoy it when you get there!
dO YoU EvEn LiKE AnYThinG? lol Lord of the Rings would be on my list of popular books I like too. I still have yet to read anything by Jane Austen... Oops. Also, Folio editions! They're beautiful!
"nowadays my treat to myself is paying rent" LMAO those folio editions of his dark materials are goooorgeous! after hearing your thoughts i'm definitely moving the golden compass up on my tbr.
I love hearing you talk about rereading Austen because I also reread my favorite Austen books every year! I feel like I enjoyed them when I was younger but I appreciate how complex and funny they are more now that I’m older. I always find something new to think about when I read them!
That audiobook version of Pride and Prejudice is AMAZING! In 2020, or 2021, at the height of the pandemic, I read Pride and Prejudice, listened to the Audiobook version and then watched the BBC mini-series, back to back. It was a fantastic break from what was going on in the world.
Honestly, I find the people most critical of books are the ones who love it the most. Why would we spend our time pulling apart our thoughts on things if we didn't get invested in our reading? A popular series that has a place in my heart has to be Earthsea and especially that initial trilogy. I hadn't actually read Tales of Earthsea until a week ago after finding The Other Wind's ending a bit unsatisfying and I thought "a collection of short stories/novellas simply set in that world, doesn't sound necessary reading". Well, the first novella, The Finder, immediately reminded me why I loved these books. What could simply have been an account of some lore was instead a wonderful, almost fairytale-esque story with great prose that really brought out that inner child in me.
I feel like you ARE very balanced, but I don't think you're unfair. Several of these books you said it required another read for you to appreciate the book. A lot of times readers, myself included, will give up halfway through. You remind me that my mental state, mood, etc all affect how I approach a book and sometimes a book deserves a second chance. Loved this list!! Loved your explanations and experiences! Thank you for another amazing video!
I love to listen to you talking about books☺️☺️, I read Jane Eyre in 2017 I believe and since then I've reread twice and I'm planning to reread again, I love it soo much!! Pride and Prejudice was one of the first classics I've read and it is one of my favourite books with Jane and Persuasion too. About the hate u give I've read twice and I've watched the adaptation but I still prefer the book. I've recommended it to a couple of my friends and they love it too. It breaks my heart everytime I read it
gah this was a reminder for me to get that p&p folio version eventually haha i'm going to reread it using the illustrated version soon and i' so excited. i'm going to finally finish his dark materials because yes those first 2 just got me good. i love thinking about this and for me the great gatsby and speak by laurie halse anderson are some of those books that i just will always call favorites.
I love Jane Austen and Pride and Prejudice; it is one of most favorite books, but I think Persuasion has become my favorite of Jane Austen Novels and then of course I also adore Jane Erye 💓
The 1995 Persuasion movie adaption is what started me on my love for all things Austen and historical fiction romance. I think Emma is my favorite of her books.
I still find it so odd that people can watch your channel and think you don't like anything you read??? I really appreciate how balanced your reading is and that you don't base your reviewing credibility off of never ever giving out a 5 star, or something (like some people appear to, though obviously I don't know that for sure) I vaguely remember liking the LotR books when I first read them as a kid and I've always loved the movies, but it wasn't until I reread/finally finished the series last year that I really fell in love with them in a way that's like "oh...these books just live in my heart and soul now". Reading them as an adult they hit so much harder, and it was truly a perfect series to read in the terrible year that was 2020. --- oh you mentioned you did this too! yeah, those themes just...oof, they really hit last year 😅💔 Mari I just love listening to you love Jane Austen 🥰 YES THE BLUE EYELINER AGAIN 💕 Really enjoyed this!! I think it's healthy for us all to remember we all love some popular things lol. Besides some of the ones you mentioned, a few of mine off the top of my head are the Lunar Chronicles, Shakespeare, and The Book Thief ... which after listing those, are a very interesting combination but I stand by it!
Sort of unrelated to the theme of the video, but as you were talking about The hate you give I had a realization about why I have a hard time sometimes getting through popular books. It's the fact that it can take too long for the plot to catch up with the key point of the sinopsis. The things that lead to said key point seems like the "real story" hasn't started yet, (in fact, it hapenned with His dark materials).
Folio has some gorgeous editions! 😍😍😍 I have Howl’s Moving Castle and am waiting for them to release the other two books in the series like they said they would. ☺️
I love them so much! And I've definitely had my eye on the Howl's Moving Castle edition. I didn't know they had plans to the whole series... I'm in trouble...
I definitely like to see both, especially if someone can tell what they like and don’t like in each. There is something heartwarming though about seeing someone gush about something ❤️❤️
I'd love to see you do this for books between 75k and 500k. Still in that bracket of well loved, with some well known in the non-bookish world, but also some that are mainly here on booktube
I don't understand the hate towards trying to read things that may not be in your comfort zone. I don't WANT every book I read to be 5 stars. I feel like it would dilute the feeling of finally reading something you loved!
American Gids is excellent. Great video. Also I love how you keep it authentic. So many on booktube avoid reviewing in away that doesn't conform to the group think.
Thank you! I think it takes time to get used to your own reviewing voice, you know? I've been doing this long enough now that I'm nice and comfortable expressing my opinion 😂 Thanks for watching!
I totally get you on the Lord of the Rings bit. I was soooo intimidated by it but once I started reading it (and I listened to the audiobook as well), I was surprised as to how much I loved it. So good!
Subterranean Press versions are my "treat yourself!" splurges. If you've never seen them some of them are very pretty limited editions with original art and all kinds of stuff.
i love your negative content, when you hate a book i love, it gives me the opportunity to evaluate the reasons i loved it, and when you hate a book i hated, i just love watching you take them apart so reasonably. I also think that reading books critically is never bad -- i read books i love critically!! you don't need to just mindlessly love stuff! make space for loving imperfect things, and make space criticism in the things you love
ASOIAF/GOT will always be one of my favorite popular series, I haven't read it in almost a decade but I've yet to read a series that has mastered world building, plot, and interesting characters while also being extremely comprehensive/readable (most adult fantasy can be a little dense) I'm also a massive poppy wars fan, this is the only series where I've actively sought out what the author's message/intent was for their series. (I would highly recommend watching kuangs interviews, she's super articulate and it adds more layers to TPW if you're not super familiar with chinese history or colonization theory)
I have such a love/hate relationship with ASOIAF! I’ve only read through it once and I definitely want to reread it. It has characters and moments I love, but GRRM desperately needed to be edited with a tighter hand! 😂 I hope to see how I feel about it after a second read in the next year or two.
i do like your one star reviews because of how detailed they are but its also really nice to hear you talk about stuff you like. i was wondering if you would want to do a video about books that are just ~vibes~ ? i dislike the grisha trilogy as a story but i do remember enjoying the first book because of the atmosphere. and ive been wanting to give night circus a go, although i had to dnf the starless sea, so im a bit hesistant now
I definitely like The Night Circus more than The Starless Sea. They both prioritize setting over plot, but where TNC was cohesive of a bit simple, TSS was a mess, honestly. I think if you are willing to try, you find TNC better than TSS! And I love this idea for a video. Have to think about more vibes books. ❤️
Nevermoor definitely would have made my list. The whimsy of it all just speak ot my soul. If you decide to pick up The Hobbit I would recommend the new audiobook narrated by Andy Serkis. Not to oversell but it's one of the best audiobooks I've ever listened to and it made me love the story, whereas when I read it the first time I just felt kind of meh about it.
Oh man I love American Gods, I swear that book is the reason I love jaded passive protagonists, I just finished Birds of Paradise by Oliver K. Langmead and it wasn’t as good but it gave me huge American Gods vibes, you might wanna check it out if you’re ever looking for something similar.
Big lol at your Night Circus ✨revelation✨ but also wow yes A GOOD LIST. LotR is the only thing on this list I have not yet read. It's on my very long "one day" list. Also ty for mentioning me multiple times it makes me feel v famous to watch a video and get to say "hey, that's me!"
I would pay money for a content where I get to experience you reading LoTR. I can just imagine the OUTRAGE the 100th time someone start singing. Gotta mention you all the time always HEY EVERYONE, IT'S MY BEST FRIEND, NICOLE.
I went into The Hate U Give knowing absolutely nothing, I didn't even read the synopsis (I mostly never do) and let me tell you, this book had me crying at like page 6. I had no idea about the catalyst of the story, so I was just sitting at the park in shock that it happened and hiding my face from the people walking by me 😅
The Hobbit and the Silmarillion are my comfort books, they are both soo amazing while being the complete opposite to each other haha hope you get around them some day
Did you know Jennifer Ehle (1995 Pride & Prejuduce) read the book here on UA-cam? I fangirled so hard! 😂... if Colin Firth ever did the audiobook (even just the Darcy lines) I would combust 😆
I also like to read books critically to the point where my husband has asked me several times why I read since I don't "like" anything. I think it's just my overly analytical brain. I think story-telling in all of its iterations (video games, shows, movies, books, etc.) is so fascinating and impactful. On a side note about Shadow and Bone, I read reviews for it prior to reading because I knew it was set in a "fantasy" Russia and , being Russian myself, I had a feeling it would have some flaws. Leigh Bardugo really should have had a sensitivity reader. I was willing to forgive pretty much all of the issues I encountered when reading it by attributing it to ignorance however her reaction to constructive criticism from the Russian audience really left a bad taste in my mouth. I'm dreading the Netflix series and I hope that they make some modifications.
I read the lord of the rings when I was around 12/13 and have never gone back to them because it was Too Much, I’m sure I’d enjoy them way more now so I should get to it 😅
I love the setting and side characters of the Night Circus. I actually as a personal project want to sit down and design it because it would be such a great challenge doing something in all black and white with splashes of red here and there. But Celia and Marco are not it for me. I don't like them and their relationship. But the vibes of the setting are absolutely it!!
I totally get this. On my first reading, I also found Celia and Marco the weakest part of their own story. And, actually, I still believe that, but also I have so much more appreciation for how the setting is an extension of these characters and how everything I love about the book is deeply connected to them. Their relationship is a little more angsty that I typically for for, but they've grown more on me in rereading!
@@mynameismarines I do need to re-read this for the project's sake of course, but I definitely want to see if I can pick up what you're putting down about the setting being an extension of these characters. I kind of get it but it's been...four years since I last read it so things are a little fuzzy. :)
I have and I didn't like it as much...! I do suspect that it might be a similar deal that if I were to reread The Starless Sea, I might appreciate it more, but I found that the weakness of the plot in the Starless Sea wasn't that it was simplistic, but too convoluted. I kept going WHAT? and HUH? and WHY? and found that much less enjoyable.
Not gonna lie; when I'm new to a Booktube channel, there's always that one small moment where I wonder if the person likes The Lord of the Rings. 😅 Not that it's a make-or-break deal for me. I'm glad, though, that you like it.
Thank you and HMMM!!! I based it like I said on the books that have the most ratings on GR so I’m not sure. GR is a global platform, but I would imagine part of it would be the (over) representation of British work in the Western canon?
LotR is one of those things I'm really disappointed I didn't like. The writing style just doesn't work for me, sadly. Def with you on The Night Circus though. I adore that book.
Yes, for sure. I’m not someone who balks at people not liking LotR because it’s really dense and for a lot of times for no reason. I love it now, but I never forget that it took me like three tries before I did and that it was primarily through the help of audiobooks!
@@mynameismarines it definitely is. For me, a big part of it is how my brain reacts to books. Some types of descriptions feel like they "get in the way" and I keep having to stop and readjust how I'm imagining the places and people because of it, which takes me out of the story and make it much less enjoyable. I might try it with audiobooks though. It's been a while, maybe I'll like it better now.
Do you even like anything? Girl, you're perfect for me just because you consider P&P the best book ever. Any fan of Austen has my respect (huge fan here). Not to mention Lord of the Rings. You're fine, trust me.
“These days my treat to myself is paying rent” I feel this in my soul 😭
All I want is books but I guess I’ll pay rent. 😭
I cackled!
You are the most eloquently spoken booktuber! I just love listening to you talk. 😍😅
This is so nice!!! Thank you for watching ❤️
I would definitely love to see you revisit this in part 2 with books you love that Booktube has also hyped up.
I don’t know why reading this comment made me realize I forgot to include Hunger Games in this video. 🥴
Really gotta do a part 2 now!

I love the Night Circus too! And I love you for being tough on books. It’s part of your charm! 💜🦄💯
Thank you so much for watching and the kind words ❤️❤️
Boy, I really need to read Pride and Prejudice!! I’ve heard great things about the audiobook with Pike.
I did read Jane Eyre last year! 😊
Yes! We love this book already and then add her voice(Pike) in the audio, amazing!
I read The Hobbit first as a preteen, and that made it easy to love the series. I so envy you the Folio editions. :D And P&P is one of my top 10 favorites of all time.

I love Jane Eyre and a lot of Jane Austen too, and this makes me want to prioritize rereading them again!

Folio society of P&P is my favorite in my collection
It’s so PRETTY. I want all the Austen’s now 😭
Persuasion is the bomb
Yes and Anne Elliot is a queen.
Thank you for this rec! This is 100% how I’m going to consume this story now and I’m really excited to do so. ❤️
I had no idea about the catalyst of the story, so I was just sitting at the park in shock that it happened and hiding my face from the people walking by me 😅
Do you have a favourite for the audio version of Jane Eyre? I really would like to reread it in audiobook form. Great video!
I always listen to the version read by Juliet Stevenson. I find it her voice really soothing!
@@mynameismarines Thank you, I will check it out!
part 2 please! you could do like 100,000 to 500,000 ratings. you make me wanna read American gods and the night circus
The Hobbit and the Silmarillion are my comfort books, they are both soo amazing while being the complete opposite to each other haha hope you get around them some day
I definitely will! I want to actually reread the whole series and then move on to the Hobbit. I’m sure I’ll love it 🥰
Did you know Jennifer Ehle (1995 Pride & Prejuduce) read the book here on UA-cam?
Have you read any of Steven King's book? Do you have recommendations? Thank you.
Love your channel ♥️
Thank you so much! I haven’t read any King ever and I’m not sure I want to…. Lol
@@mynameismarines ☺
I read the lord of the rings when I was around 12/13 and have never gone back to them because it was Too Much, I’m sure I’d enjoy them way more now so I should get to it 😅
LoTR IS too much!!! But now I'm like "it's my too much 🥺" lol
Stay who you are Marines 👍
I have to comment early and ask what is that color on your nails? 🥰🥰🥰
Have you read the starless sea yet? 😄
I'm glad, though, that you like it.
lol yes I totally get what you mean. It took me a while to warm up to the story but I do love it now! ❤️
oh you're going to love The Hobbit!
I’m excited about this now. I didn’t have it on my radar to read soon but the comments have hyped me up.
Most of these books are by British writers. Do you think there might be a reason for that?
Thank you and HMMM!!! I based it like I said on the books that have the most ratings on GR so I’m not sure. GR is a global platform, but I would imagine part of it would be the (over) representation of British work in the Western canon?
@@mynameismarines Makes sense. I am British and I love the same books you do, too! I was obsessed with P&P and Jane Eyre when I was younger. Still am!
It's been a while, maybe I'll like it better now.
hi i love this and you that is all
Wait wait wait you liked American Gods? I didn’t enjoy it so much but i guess now I’ll try it
I really did not like the night circus 😕.
Aw, sorry to hear that! I definitely had some issues with it when I first read it, but I reread for the setting, and it just got better on reread. ❤️
Do you even like anything? Girl, you're perfect for me just because you consider P&P the best book ever. Any fan of Austen has my respect (huge fan here). Not to mention Lord of the Rings. You're fine, trust me.
Stay true to yourself. People will read whatever they want . So many times a really bad review makes me want read the book - human nature?
Yes, for sure! A bad review can make me curious or it can bring up things the reviewer didn't like that I think I might like!
