**update Part 2, here **ua-cam.com/video/mK1yCNCDsPE/v-deo.html** ..... ** A video i've been wanting to do for a while based on a conversation myself and Geoff (chef excellence) were having on set at Stuart's movie filming. So if you'd like to see more like this I have a few home economists / stylists I can reach out to and help me show you some more advanced stuff! Cheers and remember, no PVA glue on your cereal please.
With all the "forbidden" foods circling the web, kids should really love all of these. And dash of hairspray on strawberries is probably a bit heathier than Tide Pods.
when I was a kid I wanted to be a food stylist because I thought the idea of making inedible items looks like food was super cool love the video Barry!
It should be stated that, legally, whatever food is being advertised HAS to be real. In the case of the cereal, while the cereal is real, the milk is not. The pancake mix makes real pancakes, but the motor oil syrup isn't.
I was coming here to say the same thing! I remember watching a documentary about the whole process and they had to make a law so that the food that is advertised is the same quality and quantity (and realness) as when you buy it. So like McDonald's food advertisers go through soooo many patties, pieces of lettuce, tomato, cheese, buns, and indi-fudging-vidual seasme seeds to make that burger look the best it can using only what would be sold in the stores. It truly is quite fascinating.
it's a shame doing so wastes allot of edible food that could of otherwise been eaten, that's food people in starving countries could be eating but can't because in advertising it they make it inedible
For the cupcake topping instead of using the spray cream you can use the old fashioned hand mix shaving cream and put it in a piping bag. Much easier to work with.
I love your longer videos! I always feel like I'm a guest in your house just hanging out while you show me some new recipe or food trick you've learned!
This was quite fascinating to watch, the tricks people come up with. On the other hand, though, it is scary how much food gets wasted in the food staging industry, just for the sake of advertisement.
I did a placement a food manufacturer last year developing new products. One day we got to go to the food photography studio where they were shooting the pics for the packaging for one of my new products. It was one of the highlights of my year! So interesting! I'd love to see you do more vids on this topic :)
I remember learning about this when I was in elementary school. We went on a class trip to what I assume was a television studio, and the cereal trick is the one that stuck with me the most, lol. I always found it fascinating
I’d be fascinated to see more food styling! It’s fascinating to me...kind of like how they use red lights in the meat case at least he grocery store to make it look fresher and more enticing.
When I was in high school English class, we had to make a commercial. We learned about all the ins and outs of food commercials. It was really quite fascinating to learn how they did these things. Like ice cream was really shortening. I was surprised how many non food items were used.
haha yes I've heard a lot about these food stylists using tampons in water and heating them up to place under say the bun of a burger to make it look steamy! LOL!
Barry, you should do the “letting the person in front of me order” challenge. Go to the supermarket and buy whatever the person in front of you gets and you have to cook a meal from what you get!
People shouldn't be awkward about using words like tampons, Barry. We don't want girls, like your daughters, to feel ashamed about something that is as normal as sneezing!
I like the way the normal one looks for the pancakes better. Also, in my mind, now, Mrs. Barry: "Honey, we need some oil for the car." Mr. Barry: "Ok, I'll go squeeze the pancakes."
Would pouring yogurt (the kind you get in a tetra-pack, not the kind you get in a bucket) on the cereals not have a very similar effect to the glue? Looks like it has a similar consistency and stays on in a similar way, plus it also looks glossy
@@roserivers4941 yogurt drinks are terribly overpriced. I feel like glue would be cheaper. Besides, there's still the issue of the terribly warm studio lights and long hours being left out of the fridge. Yogurt would stink up the whole studio and the yogurt drinks, with added milk and sugars, would smell so bad! lol
What if you sprayed each pancake with hairspray before pouring the motor oil? The hairspray might create a barrier where the oil will pool on top of the pancake.
A couple food styling hack that I heard was (a) putting small cardboard disks in between pancakes in a stack will make the stack look taller, and (2) you can use a scoop of mashed potatoes in place of ice cream in photos (or a dessert display in restaurants)
I work in Video Editing for TV Adverts working alongside UK Supermarkets and Just to say- this might've been the case a while ago, but in TV Adverts there's a law that was passed in the UK meaning that in Adverts they HAVE to be the product being advertised, they can't use stand ins. Admittedly there's a team of people cooking it to perfection and ensuring that it's absolutely perfect, then another team to light it and focus it perfectly but they can't use other products now. Even then There is still a load of work that goes in After filming with colour grading and making composite shots of the favourite parts but none of it is faked anymore, everything you see on a TV Advert has to be real. These are all probably used in TV programs but they can't be used in Advertising in the UK. Great video anyway!
Yes yes yes! I love this sort of stuff. Barry, you should look into Japanese fake food that is used for displays in restaurants/photos. There’s at least one documentary about it here on UA-cam and it’s a really interesting art! You can even order kits online to make your own fake food props!
I’ve been living in France for a few years and have been dying to get a slice of Victorian sponge cake, as soon as you brought it out my mouth went kaput
Very cool! I look forward to the expert video! I learned a bit about this when studying Graphic Design. I think it's something people should be aware of in advertising.
This is really interesting, I like knowing tricks like these. Even though all of these look better to me in their natural form with the sole exception of hairsprayed glue milk.
One trick I've noticed is pictures of party food platters - often they'll have two or more tiers, but they'll bring all the food to the front and leave the overlaps between the tiers empty. It looks like two full platters of food when it probably only fills one at best.
I have just made a dinner from a cookbook. Now I partly know why it didn’t look like the picture. Well except from me not doing things right:) I liked this video, especially the last one where you compared dishes with and without food styling. I also wanted to eat it.
I love this video idea 😂 I remember seeing a video on UA-cam of how they do McDonald’s food for their adverts. Makes you realise why the food looks a mess from there 😂
Nice shirt! 6:35 - 6:38 Nice! LOL I freakin love watching videos about these hacks, so it's cool to see you doing them too. Would def love to see more.
A thing they do in fastfood photography is move all the ingredients to the front, so when you look at the pictures at McDonalds, what you see is what you get, no more, no less.. :P
I just noticed that your measuring cup says : Approx Capacities. WTH!? Isn't that what that cup is for? If it were a toy for a kids kitchen set, I'd understand. That's crazy. I'll be looking at my cups today as well!
People also censor saying poop and pee. Saying just going to the bathroom, or number 1/2. We dont proudly advertise the body's waste products because they're waste products.
I've seen a segment on this before, so I knew about cold dishes and carton inside burgers or cakes and I've seen professional food stylists use all kinds of binding agents to produce thick, glowy sauces and stuff and I could see myself watching more on this! (Just maybe less food waste if possible)
STILL trying to get an epub copy of this. I don't do physical books because of space and I won't use a format that restricts me to a specific app to read it. So far that seems to be the only option in the states.
Back in the day when I worked in advertising marketing, the cupcakes would actually be Styrofoam painted the frosting would be stuffin dried in glue or yarn. The cereal bowls would be filled with rocks or Styrofoam then acrylic painted then cereal bits on top..
They sprayed strawberries with hairspray on GMM too, both times I've thought it literally makes no difference, strawberries are naturally shiny anyway, but the other stuff I can see a difference
**update Part 2, here **ua-cam.com/video/mK1yCNCDsPE/v-deo.html** ..... ** A video i've been wanting to do for a while based on a conversation myself and Geoff (chef excellence) were having on set at Stuart's movie filming. Barry Lewis please do more I like learning tips and tricks :)
Loved this!! Ive always been interested in this stuff too. Cant wait to see more!! 👍👍
Please do more with a food stylist. It is very interesting when you see it i practice an compared to the «ordinary food».
👏👏👏👏
Would love to see a playlist dedicated to food styling!!
17 full minutes of Barry Poisoning the unsuspecting.
Perfect comment
With all the "forbidden" foods circling the web, kids should really love all of these. And dash of hairspray on strawberries is probably a bit heathier than Tide Pods.
I'm certainly all in on a food styling playlist, that would be incredibly informative and awesome to watch.

Thank you for pointing this out.
Thanks for bringing this up...I hadn't thought about it from that angle!
it's a shame doing so wastes allot of edible food that could of otherwise been eaten, that's food people in starving countries could be eating but can't because in advertising it they make it inedible
If you're this mad about the food photography industry I've got bad news for you about every other food industry in the world....
For the cupcake topping instead of using the spray cream you can use the old fashioned hand mix shaving cream and put it in a piping bag. Much easier to work with.
I love your longer videos! I always feel like I'm a guest in your house just hanging out while you show me some new recipe or food trick you've learned!
William Brown ... Completely agree. Exactly why I loved the vlogs of the whole week x
Barry you just destroyed food in this entire video 😂
Every chefs dream...secretly
Oof... the clean up required to make that kitchen food safe again!
This was quite fascinating to watch, the tricks people come up with. On the other hand, though, it is scary how much food gets wasted in the food staging industry, just for the sake of advertisement.
If you got 10w or a 15 w it would have a much more viscous look, because that's what the number stands for. 5w is a pretty thin oil.
You can also put icing on a household sponge to make a big thick cake. It looks really cool and is a great prank too. :)
You'll never get the smell and taste of hairspray out of that cutting board now 😆
I was hoping you'd make a video on this after you mentioned it in the other video!!
and im here thinking "all those wasted food :( "

For ice cream they sub mashed potato, it won't melt under studio lights 🍦
I remember learning about this when I was in elementary school. We went on a class trip to what I assume was a television studio, and the cereal trick is the one that stuck with me the most, lol. I always found it fascinating
Very cool love how you’re branching out! I’m always down to see you work with other people.
Cheers
I’d be fascinated to see more food styling! It’s fascinating to me...kind of like how they use red lights in the meat case at least he grocery store to make it look fresher and more enticing.
I like the non-hairspray food look better. If you want the water look that stays, clear syrup.
I love your channel! I wish I could say that on every single video. It is a place I come to regularly to feel better.
Love to see more of that. Have a good week.
When I was in high school English class, we had to make a commercial. We learned about all the ins and outs of food commercials. It was really quite fascinating to learn how they did these things. Like ice cream was really shortening. I was surprised how many non food items were used.
They also use mashed potatoes for ice cream
Loved this! Please do a series on food styling x
This is really neat. I totally agree that another video like this would be cool.
haha yes I've heard a lot about these food stylists using tampons in water and heating them up to place under say the bun of a burger to make it look steamy! LOL!
Love the little Scottish flat by the couch
Barry, you should do the “letting the person in front of me order” challenge. Go to the supermarket and buy whatever the person in front of you gets and you have to cook a meal from what you get!
Would love to see more episodes like this. I feel like this could have a very long playlist like the kitchen gadgets
the cornflouer trick can be used with jellies/jellos as well, the really thick sturdy ones
People shouldn't be awkward about using words like tampons, Barry. We don't want girls, like your daughters, to feel ashamed about something that is as normal as sneezing!
I would love to see a food stylist video! I always enjoy seeing how props and the like are made!
I like the way the normal one looks for the pancakes better. Also, in my mind, now, Mrs. Barry: "Honey, we need some oil for the car." Mr. Barry: "Ok, I'll go squeeze the pancakes."
Well that was an eye-opener Barry! More please?

And you could eat it
The problem you'd have with yogurt is that it doesn't pour as nicely and it doesn't spread out by itself as evenly.
@@SpeedDemonStar but if you had drinking yogurts they would.
@@roserivers4941 yogurt drinks are terribly overpriced. I feel like glue would be cheaper. 100% would want to see more of this barry
I knew I refreshed my sub box one more time before going to sleep for a reason! Wahoo Barry!!!!
Yes, yes! Serious fun required!
Excellent. More please!
What if you sprayed each pancake with hairspray before pouring the motor oil? The hairspray might create a barrier where the oil will pool on top of the pancake.
One of my favorite of your videos. So interesting... more? yes please.
First, let me say how awesome you are and a real joy to watch. Second, a follow up video with a real food stylist would be also awesome!
I love stuff like this, please do more!
I would definitely be excited for more of this! I do this myself for my friends videos but I'm always open to learning more (I'm self taught).
I can't be the only who thinks the actual pancakes with maple syrup looks a whole lot better?
If we didn't know which was real and which was fake, I actually prefer the fake one's appearance.
@@tncorgi92 I disagree I prefer the darkness of the real maple syrup
the other looks to watery
Would love to see you getting all nerdy with the proper stylists.
Woo!! I love stuff like this!
Fun video! The motor oil trick was mind blowing. I’m never going look at a picture of a stack of pancakes the same. 😝
Can you use a piping bag for the shaving foam?
Thank you this awesome video! Please more!

That's comforting news.
Food stylists must have a degree in craziness!
omg this is awesome id love to see more!
I kinda already knew these hacks but it was amusing seeing Barry try them out- please do follow up videos 🙂👍🏼
This was so informative and intresting!
This is a great video! So interesting. Loved it x

Loved the video Barry, this is a topic that I find pretty interesting. I don't think I will be able to look at food advertising in the same way lol.
Where did you get this shirt i want it for my brother
My wife and I would love to see more.
Sanitary items aren't anything to be ashamed of. You have daughters.
Love your videos Barry, but really, you can’t say tampons? It’s not like they’re dirty. It kind of makes me feel sad about the society we’re in.
*W E L I V E I N A S O C I E T Y*
