- Replacing the rear hatch support struts on a first and second generation Mini Cooper
In this video I’m showing you how to replace the rear hatch support struts on a first or second generation Mini Cooper. The rear hatch support struts are the exact same part on both generations.
The only tool required to do this job is a flat head screwdriver.

Using your video as a guide and the Amazon link you provided, I just completed this repair. Thanks a bunch! Helpful DIY videos like this are some of the best things on UA-cam.
This is very helpful. My 2012 Cooper’s rear hatch struts were weak and lethargic so I got a pair of replacements for it. It was a simple matter to use a flat head screw driver and pull off those tabs and pull the struts right off. Cleaned all the surfaces thoroughly with a good spray of WD40 and replaced the struts. Now the hatch gate support when open is as good as new and there is a good amount of resistance when pushing the hatch to shut the rear.
It's as easy as you made it look, thank you for the video!
Thanks, this helped me change my tired Mini boot struts too.
Thanks, helped me decide to fit 12mm spacers on my Mini too.
Excellent video
Can't believe it was so easy and cheap to fix
Thank you, was able to do this in under 5 minutes!
Thanks for taking the time to show this. Will replace mine now.
The struts on our '06 R53 finally gave out. Thanks for the info and the visuals!! All it took was a couple of bonks on the head to steer me to your video.
I bought these using the link you provided. I followed your instructions to the letter. The first one worked perfectly and still does. The second one never worked right. It pushed the hatch up so hard that it kept popping the second one off. I even tried to hold it to keep it from opening so violently. It did not good.
It is obviously the retaining spring inside the bracket but it is spring metal and cannot be bent. I will have to return one of them.
This is fantastic thanks! Mine are slowly giving up after 9 years so I ll do this….
The link to the Amazon Foxwell is dead you wont get a commission if don't work, great Videos very clear thank you.
Thanks for showing and sharing
Thank you friend.
Thank you!
Thanks, replacing mine this afternoon.
Really useful video. Its the small things that when they don't work, irritate that crap out of you. I'll save this one for what I'm sure will be a problem in my future. 2009 R56 Base.
I ordered more for my 09 as well, its super nice when they work this good
Thank you.
Can this be done on the clubman rear doors aswell
