MLB teams can only stop their players from participating in the WBC if they meet certain injury conditions

    • @Qardo
      @Qardo Рік тому +36

Well, if you ran the league. Would you allow your top players go out to compete, get hurt, and likely come back worse? It would hurt viewership. And really, it is not the MLB's fault the International League decides to hold their competition during the season.
Plus, Japanese baseball teams are not like MLB teams. Japanese teams are owned by literal corporations. The team is slapped with the corporate name and logo. And it isn't uncommon for a team to end up with a corporate name change in the middle of the season. And those who manage the team are not always the best fit. A lot of the time, it is seen as a bonus, and for whoever is put into the management role to flaunt around to impress others (manly women). Also, to party and have a good time. Never seriously managing the team.
So this is why Japanese teams can send players to go play on the international stage. It is because they don't play in a very well centralized league. At best, Japanese Baseball is like the Profesional Beer League.
And I know that is a bit of an insult. As I know, Japanese baseball players are insanely good. And do get paid pretty fairly, these days, to play. Just compared to an MLB player. They make pocket change. And I call it a "Beer League" because those put into management roles do not take it seriously or really do not care. It is an image thing. And it is on couching staff to do basically everything. While trying to please the "manager's" whims.

Sports are only ever interesting and meaningful on some kind of an ethnic basis. As MLB tries to become as foreign as possible to me as an American, I will inevitably become less and less interested in it, because I simply don't care that much about foreign players on a team that's supposed to be local to me in some way that I can understand. Sports is a metaphor for war, so celebrating the MLB being filled with foreign players is just like rooting for the wrong country.
They're always moaning also about how MLB hasn't been taken over by blacks as the NBA and NFL have. Well, blacks as a whole clearly aren't the best at baseball. Investing in the inner city doesn't seem to pay off that much. They would clearly get better returns by investing in England, Germany, Netherlands, Australia. Or even American suburbs, how about that? Those are untapped economic markets, and those peoples are historically the best baseball players. Even if they were the 4th best I'd rather watch them.

I think a big part of the WBC’s problem is that it doesn’t work like the World Cup. During the WC, the entire soccer world comes to a total stop, there isn’t any other high level soccer on anywhere except for the WC. The event is also hosted by a single country (or sometimes a couple of neighboring countries). This means that fans can basically spend the whole month hopping from stadium to stadium watching as many games as they can, but it also adds a certain intangible feeling that makes each tournament special. Everyone in the soccer world remembers Italia ‘90 or South Africa 2010 or the infamous Qatar 2022.
If the WBC wants to really be the World Cup of baseball (which I think it should), it needs to actually work like a World Cup.

I am from Venezuela and I can say there are a lot of differences. I live in Kentucky and have for the past 10 years or so. I am not sure how it is in other states like Texas, Florida, and Arizona. In Venezuela, you get more focus on learning techniques and developing players. It is more about learning how to play than playing itself. When I played in college here you could tell the contrast. It was just scrimmaging and a little bit of conditioning. The same seems to be the case for high schools here from one kid I have helped coach. Seems like if you want to get actually coached to improve as a player you have to pay extra for that. Also in the USA athletic superiority is rewarded while in countries like Venezuela that is also rewarded but so is developing your skills. That is how guys like Altuve exist. When I was coming up it was not unusual to be coached by a former professional player or someone who went to the academies and they would bring that knowledge with them. Also, Latin American players don't care about not getting paid millions at first. When you get drafted down there you become a hero in your community. Also, the conversion rate can allow you to buy a house with a few thousand dollars, the minimum wage in Venezuela is a few dollars a month. Whereas if you are an American drafted here you have a higher cost of living and 15,000 bucks won't get you anywhere, that is not even minimum wage here.

To some degree, true. While baseball has been played in Australia for around 170 years, it is very much in minority and kids / adults have choices you have not heard of like surf lifesaving for example. We pull well above our weight in terms of number of MLB players produced and also that, despite the huge distances involved, we have had a national champonship tournament since WW2. The sport attracts little media attention which does not help growth.

“In some Latin it’s pretty much all that’s actually going on.”
This comment would be laughable if it weren’t so breathtakingly ignorant. I am Dominican, and I can assure you, every country has a lot of bs going on 24/7. The difference is, except for a few big cities that are considered “baseball capitals” like NY, Boston and LA, Americans have largely abandoned baseball.
Under every baseball post all you will see if a bunch of American trolls complaining about how “boring” it is. Americans have become so addicted to instant satisfaction and constant non stop stimulation. Baseball is more tense and exciting than football and basketball in my opinion, but you have to actually pay attention, which is hard for Americans of millennial ages and under.
In Dominican Republic, it’s practically a religion and part of our culture. Basketball is becoming popular as well but baseball is in our blood. Everyone, women, men, children, watch baseball regularly. Kids play baseball with sticks and bottle caps. We love baseball.

The shift is happening again recently (4 of the 5 top 5 pics in 2022 mlb draft were black americans). If the world baseball classic existed in the 70's through early- mid 90s US would've won (hank aaron, Dave Parker, eddie murray, Ozzie smith, willie randolph, barry bonds, Dwight Gooden, bo jackson, Gary Sheffield, ken griffey jr, tony gwynn, devon white, bary larkin, etc) Just look at the all star game lineups in the 80's and 90's. I have an Ichiro story for the 2009 WBC. I usually refer to it as the "time Ichiro almost got me killed". in 2009, I lived in Beijing, in Wudakou, which is pretty much where many of the universities are located, so there are many intl students. At the time I lived near a korean restaurant called "熊家餐厅" that was frequented by many intl students, especially, koreans and korean salarymen. I lived in one of those old apartment buildings across from it with my Japanese roommate, very well educated and knowledgeable on the past things his country had done in the name of imperialism. Yes, you know where this story is going.
The restaurant normally opened during lunch time, but because of the time difference opened extra early and let the yanjing beer, soju, sake, 二锅头 flow at 9am ish. since the game was played 6 or 7pm back stateside. My roommate and I had classes that morning but we were free late morning and really wanted to watch the final match. By the time we had arrived, that restaurant which I bet usually held max of 70-80 people was closer to 150 capacity, raucous, loud, and full of alcohol, I can remember the metal kegs just not even put out near the front door, they were legitimately just parked near the front entrance. Majority of the drunk were of course koreans, singing, swearing and just alcohol being spilled left and right. A few were expats from other countries, just wanting to be part of the moment, some Americans of course.
As it was getting to the 9th inning, Ichiro was at bat in one of the most cliché styles, and it was I believe a full count. The korean pitcher threw what seemed like a straight fastball down the middle, one of those moments of, you're either going to swing and miss or hit it and you're winning. It was a classic showdown of like two gunslingers about to draw, go watch it on youtube, you'll know what I'm talking about.
Ichiro in dramatic fashion hits it and has his teammates run for home plate as he gets on base, the classic Ichiro hit where the infielders cant get to the ball and neither can the outfielders. With Japan scoring and Korea practically losing this wbc finals, my roommate, in quick lack of judgment (and of the history he is so well versed on), decides to yell in a place packed full of pissed and drunk koreans, "Nippon Bansai!" or in chinese writing “日本万岁!" . Now, this has several connotations: 1. a gesture of celebration and/or chant, because translated it does mean "Japan, 10,000 years" or long live japan (think of it as we Americans chanting "USA! USA! USA!" 2. and perhaps the more important travesty is than the word "bansai" brings up negative images of the past when you know Japanese soldiers went on massive murderous sprees of fixing bayonets and charging and committing acts of genocidal atrocity. Think of what the Japanese soldiers used to do when they would charge american marines known as the "bansai charge".
Knowing the faux pas my roommate just committed, his face turned white as the many Koreans in that fine establishment threw a combination of curse words at us in korean and chinese, "shibal" "cao ni ma!" " qu si!" "日本鬼子去你妈!“ and what not. I have never reached for my money so fast to throw on the table, grabbed my roommate and booked it out of there as bottles were being thrown at us and whatever other plates and hot grill pans for the korean bbq. We ran out, kicked the bikes/scooters over so they would be able to ride it, got on ours and rode as hard as possible in our honda clone 125cc scooter. All throughout that speed and torque in which the 125xx motor was straining, was my Japanese roommate apologizing profusely, and me swearing up and down about how much of an idiot he was.
We didn't get back until later that night when things had died down and i drove to my apartment compound and parked the scooter and we went back safely to our apartment.
I'll never forget that time as well as that korean restaurant. It still is one of my all time favorite places to eat. the owner, this korean lady, was the one who taught me how to cook dokdoritang and kimchi jiggae. as for my wife, she was my girlfriend back then, she really enjoyed that place because she was a big fan of their korean cold noodle dish, perfect for a hot summer. I had many good memories of this place, As for my roommate, he never stepped foot in that restaurant again.

Baseball is by far one of the more expensive sports for parents in the U.S. to maintain (not even counting special training/coaches/camps). Equip, uniforms, league fees. Etc. With other sports at least by the time they get to middle school/Jr. High- the schools take on the expense leaving practically little to none to parents but baseball is also usually not offered at all at this level in school. Which causes alot of baseball players to naturally shift to football/basketball. A lot of former little leaguers do jump back into baseball at HS level but obviously some or most have not played since before middle school so talent isnt as strong. So u only get a handful of players in big scheme whove had the luxory of being able to play every year from tee ball through Highschool who also play select, get afforded special training & camps etc.
Makes me wonder why so much is invested by MLB to other countries for facilities and professional training instead of back into the U.S to spare parents here and keep kids here pursuing, engaged & playing baseball who always end up playing football but always say baseball was their #1 sport. Especially minority kids who were talented at baseball but end up in football due to lack of financial resources. I'm not saying that MLB has not invested in the United States but it would be interesting to see a comparison of investments in our own country versus investments in rest of world. And I'm not saying we shouldn't be investing in other countries either but are we giving ourselves a chance or rather our own kids a chance?

USA isn’t getting worse at baseball😂 if anything we’re getting better and better. We’re about to make the WBC championship that includes the ENTIRE WORLD. Meaning not only did we win the last WBC but we are bound to win another one. Oh yeah, and our lineup to me might be one of the best lineups I’ve ever seen

I remember people said baseball is dead but it's very popular in Japan and Asia especially if Japan is getting 30% of its population watching a Shohei hit two home runs then its still alive

The Japanese are the best in baseball no way around it. It's just the facts.
      Their pitching is amazing.
And probably have the goat in ohtani.
Then it's Jeremy Pena then Mike trout.
The best player In all of baseball is not American.
Nor the best pitcher it's between alcantara or julio.
Usa invented this game but really their not the best.
They always play home with all the advantages it's not fair for the visitors. And still they lose.
Mexico beat them twice in their own house in a baseball classic.
And in 1 they did have their best alex rodriguez,Derek Jeter etc...
So that's just and excuse that they dont send their best in why they don't win.
Ultimately the Japanese would of won anyway again their pitching is simply superior. It's just the facts like I said.

@@ultrainstinct63 wrong. Mike Trout is still the best position player in baseball. Only thing that puts ohtani on the same level/above is the pitching. Also, there is simply no way that a guy with one good season is better than a man with three MVP awards and three more 2nd place finishes in MVP.
Best pitcher you can argue for a whole lot of guys. Degrom, Verlander, Scherzer, Julio, Sandy, Cole.
You have not provided facts at all. Only opinions.
