    • @Cazammaf
      @Cazammaf 7 років тому +43

      Exactly. You just proved Gavin's point... Why would you waste water in places that are like a desert? The UK isn't like a desert, so that's why we dont "pop a hydrant." Because we don't need to, we don't get much heat. Also because there are no above-ground hydrants. You can simply get a glass of water or something; America does have houses, with sinks in them, which have taps..

    • @andythedestro12
      @andythedestro12 7 років тому +39

      But is it really a waste of water? To cool people off? What constitutes a waste varies widely from region to region?

    • @bandgeekforlife406
      @bandgeekforlife406 7 років тому +30

      I live in Arizona, and while our hydrants are above ground, I have never seen or heard of any being "popped" here just to cool people off. We do try to conserve water :) Seeing as it is hot much of the year, and also very dry, things tend to burn easily and quickly, so it's nice for the firemen to have easier access to the hydrants.

    • @ivoheap3527
      @ivoheap3527 7 років тому +20

      ShadowWave water being used to "cool people off" is kinda a waste because there are so many other useful things you could do with the clean water that's being blasted into the sky - For example: Drink it, water plants with it, have it come out of every faucet in your house.
      "but it just runs back into the system" no, it runs into the storm drain, into the sewers, into and through the sewage plant, then out into the ocean, where it becomes salt water and unusable for any if the things I just mentioned. Or, y'know. Wasted.

    I see a lot a comment saying "I lived in the USA and I have never seen that" you have to remember just because it never happen around you does not mean it is not a thing. This is kids in the inner city, who are nowhere near a swimming pool or the the pool could be crowed on a hot day trying to keep cool. Going in the house to get a cup of water or having a water gun fight may not be enough, growing up me personality I have seen and done this and it was a lot of fun.

  • @BlakeBelladonnaTucAndRoll
    @BlakeBelladonnaTucAndRoll 7 років тому +37

    Okay. As a US citizen I am 100% for Gavin's take on this but for cases during extreme weather, like snow, the underground hydrant would not only be covered, but have a layer of ice over it. Yes, the chances of a severe fire in those conditions are still slim but U definately see I guess the UK's take on it.

    • @yuriplisetsky5140
      @yuriplisetsky5140 7 років тому +14

      Blake Belladonna Statistically speaking, the risk of fire increases during the winter, due to idiots leaving stuff near heaters, or faulty wiring on Christmas lights setting the tree on fire, or people leaving food cooking and it catching a blaze. The winter time is one of the worst times for fires, besides drought conditions.

    • @alphadogg64
      @alphadogg64 7 років тому +9

      Blake Belladonna Underground hydrants have slabs of bright yellow concrete sticking out of the ground where it is, so you would be able to see it when there is snow covering it. Just simply remove the snow and plug it in. And for ice, firemen have axes. Also, wouldn't the ones out of the ground also ice over? It doesn't matter if it is flat and on the ground. At least that is how it works where I live in New Zealand, and we haven't had snow since 2010.

    • @macguyverbond7480
      @macguyverbond7480 7 років тому +5

      You don't want to do that. Mallets for knocking ice off. It's a cost cutting/efficiency measure to why above surface access is the go to. Our infrastructure is also years to decades behind most geographically smaller 1st world nations, depending on what part of the country we're talking about. It's a standardized system that still works, and there are more dire things to worry about using tax money to renovate. Like our roads.

    • @spongyjakester
      @spongyjakester 7 років тому +6

      I don't know quite how, but the covers on our underground hydrant in england are specifically designed to not ice over and always seem to have the snow melted on top of them up to about 5 inches of depth. Even after that, they're quite well marked and easy to find, most firecrews know exactly where to be looking for them

    • @iainrickwood2623
      @iainrickwood2623 7 років тому +4

      also not to mention winters in England no longer come with snowfall or any temperature low enough to form particularly thick ice

    The reason it is above ground in America is because the hydrants have multiple points hoses can plug into, making it so more trucks can respond to an emergency

    • @shirosaki97
      @shirosaki97 Рік тому +3

      Ye, there are benefits to both, American Hydrants allow for more trucks to draw from the mains, whereas english hydrants are underground to protect them from our more extreme weather, since frost and constant precipitation would fuck up a typical hydrant.
      We used to have the classic looking hydrants in the past, but not anymore, they do stand out, cos they're usually got a yellow sign or painted yellow to indicate them, but ye, we basically just have our hydrants installed in the mains water supply.

    The reason the hydrant is above ground is because it's easier to find and access. Where I live it's not uncommon to have a foot or two feet of snow on the ground so it would be even harder to both find and access. The reason they are below ground though is back in the day we used to have wooden water mains that you'd have to dig up and make a hole in the main to access the water. You would then have to get a wooden plug to shove in the hole which gave rise to the term fire plug.

    There seem to be benefits and costs to having them in different ways. Above ground = easy to locate, special occasions to 'pop' it for hot summer days IF there's no strict laws about wasting water where you live BUT subject to vandalism and accidents. Below ground = not as subject to wear and tear, vandals, or accidents, good for countries were there's an economic worry about wasting water and have stricter laws against it, BUT can't 'pop' it on hot summer days, and it's harder to locate given it can be covered up easily by multiple things (so you have to know where it is to begin with).

      in the UK there are markers raised above ground on the far side of the path that would tell you there is a hydrant in front of it, so it isn't that hard to locate. (search 'uk fire hydrant')

    • @thatoneguy975

    • @twikkzy
      @twikkzy 7 років тому

      I think the lids covering the hydrants would be bright yellow, and there's also the markers, so they would be easy to locate. Also, hydrants (in literally any country) tend to be on sidewalks, so no grass, bushes, etc. would be blocking it.

    • @scotthadden9816
      @scotthadden9816 6 років тому +1

      No the thing about the UK is it rarely, if ever, gets that hot any more, the last time it got that hot was over 7 years ago. Also, it is actually illegal to intentionally obstruct a fire hydrant, the only real excuse that will get you off is if you are moving something over it, like a car, but it then breaks down, and you become unable to move it yourself. As to why they're underground, it's safer both for drivers and pedestrians. Drivers no longer have the risk of hitting something that could turn the front of their car into a u-shape, and pedestrians no longer have to worry about walking into it either in the dark or if they simply get distracted.

    we have hydrants like that in my country, but you don't open them in the summer for kids to cool off, regardless of the fact that it's 40ºc. you wanna cool off? go to the public pool, it's €2 per person

      In what regard? The hydrant being above ground?
      It's not only to make the hydrant more visible to fire fighters, but it also keeps cars from obstructing it. Some dick head can't park on top if it's a big hunk of metal sticking out of the ground.
      As for popping the hydrant, I live in the US, and I've never heard of anywhere popping fire hydrants in the summer. I can say though that I would have loved that as a kid.

    • @Chpeler
      @Chpeler 7 років тому +19

      For said dick to park ON TOP of a fire hydrant he would have to park on the pavement, and that's just as illegal as parking in front of a hydrant.

      @WTK55 7 років тому +13

    • @Holmesy87
      @Holmesy87 7 років тому +8

      To add to wwhat Zupahmann said, firefighters in the UK are legally allowed to do whatever the fuck they want to your car to get access to the hydrant.
      They can smash your windows in and run the hose through them, they can ram the car out of the way, etc. Pretty much anything they want, they can do, and they don't have to pay for it =D
      As for being hidden by snow, there are markers(raised) on the side of the street to indicate that a hydrant is in front of them (google image British fire hydrant, you'll get the idea)

    • @Chpeler
      @Chpeler 7 років тому +5

      1. You just move the garbage out of the way - same thing goes for any idiot throwing garbage on an above-ground fire hydrant.
      2. You take the snow away ...? Even above-ground fire hydrants freezes, and fire departments have antifreeze liquids to quickly open the valves.
      In most of northern Europe the fire hydrants are placed in manholes, so it's not like the valve is placed in the ground - you open the manhole, and the valve is ~1 meter down.

      But there is such a thing as running out of consumable water. If you think that rain water is safe, look up acid rain. Nearly all open water sources must be treated before it's consumable, and that costs money. So yes, technically, there is such a thing as "wasting water".

One so they would know it was not a leak but two, so they could cool off with out causing more problems for us. If it was near the center of town it became a fun little event. If you do open a hydrant remember to open and close it slowly so you don't water hammer the pipeline and cause a headache for the people who have to fix it as well as a headache for the customers.

      Yes he is, because they weren't talking about "most countries," they were talking about Britain. Michael's argument about "inner city youths" is invalid because Britain doesn't have inner cities - the entire country is near the coast, and doesn't have the 110 degree summers of southern states like Arizona, New Mexico, or Texas. Britain is also quite a bit farther north than these states, and so in addition to the dampened summer temperatures, it's also colder year round.

    Hydrants allow for more accessibility, they are more convenient because they provide multiple attachment points, are more versatile because they can accommodate multiple hose sizes without needing a converter, and it gets way colder in a good chunk of America and the above ground hydrants are designed to drain out, whereas an in ground can get iced over.

    Both systems have benefits and draw backs. The american system makes the locations easy to see so that a fire fighter doesn't take as long to locate the nearest hydrant, and also allows for the use of multiple hoses on a single hydrant. The UK system leaves hydrants less exposed, as thus suffer less environmental wear and frees up some space to make an area feel a bit more open.
