The 148 is an easy and dependable radio to use. While lacking important options in today's world, if all you are going to do is basic voice commo....not a bad choice at all!! Too bad it is not upgradable to modern standards. The SKL is a sick dog. Long live paper tape and the venerable KOI-18 or even a KIK-13.....or since that is never going to happen ever again, at least give me a KIK-11!!
Military radios have come such a long way since the mid-80s.. All we really had were analog AN/PRC-77s and KY-38 and KY-57.
