I remember opening 1981 packs as a kid. I was 11 at the time. Me and some of my friends would go collect aluminum cans from the parks and neighbors and then recycle them, and with the money we would go down to 7-11 and buy packs of these cards (yes 7-11 use to sell Topps baseball packs) . I still have mine to this day. Fun throwback!
No 7-11 near me as a kid but the locally owned deli had cards as well as far back as the 70's. 81 was my first year buying cards though as a kid. BMX bikes down to the deli for some candy and cards was always a good time as a kid.
For me it was riding my bike to UDF and asking the lady behind the counter if the new baseball cards were in. Same lady, every time, from 77 to 82. The excitement when she would say, "I think they did come in. She would go in the back and emerge with a sealed box and open it for me. Those are great memories!
1981 Topps are the first baseball cards I remember opening. I love those hats in the corner of the cards.
In first grade I collected these cards. It was the first exposure to baseball and football cards and I memorized every stat of every player of religiously. Just seeing the faces brings me back to my childhood. 1981 set. I collected for years after, but none stay indelibly Stamped on my mind like 81 baseball and 79 nfl
This was the very first set I put together as a kid. I was 10 years old when this came out.
Me too
Thanks for the memories. I started collecting in 1980. My older cousin started me in the hobby. He started in the mid 70's. Sadly, my 1980 and 1981 Topps were damaged in a move and my little brother using what remained to build forts for his Army men. I've forgiven him since then. I'm still a fan but luckily I took care of my other cards from 1983 to the mid 90's. Always a pleasure watching your channel.
1981 was the first year i started collecting. Topps Rak packs were the first cards i started with.
Funny how you passed right over Pete LaCock! Best baseball name EVER!!!!! I like how that era of Topps baseball cards are all pointing the same direction and not backwards, sideways, upside down, etc.… I also wish would they would bring back that card stock.
Perhaps even Rusty Kuntz 😂

So cool
Haha I swear every first pack between 79-84 was a Jerry Remy, 2B, Red Sox. Good times. Loved that year of cards with the little hats on them. They even depicted "square" hats for the Bucs.
Totally trust Steve Hart, very competent and never makes wild guesses on authenticity.
Well… it’s an authenticated box, so that just means he can swap packs before confirming them “authenticated” boxes. 😂
Lifting the top to reveal the packs is like peeling the plastic of a new electronic device, but even better 🥰. Love it, thanks to you and all the sponsors for sharing this.
1st year I bought packs of cards was in 1981 when I was 10. Love it!
Nice.. I love this set. I'm working on completing this set, it was the year I was born.
Going through some of my old cards I bought in 2008 and I found a 2008 topps update Max Sherzer sleeved up in perfect condition. Been in the box for 14 years. They're going for $100 raw but thinking about getting it graded since it's in great shape.
Scherzer is a lock HOF. I live in Phoenix and you could win World Series with what the Diamondbacks have traded away for horrible return..including Goldschmidt..Dansby Swanson...Trevor Bauer, although he was distraction here so I guess they get a pass on that.
Really enjoyed the box , I graduated h.s. in 1981. Saw alot my Brewers in there, meet Aaron, Stormin Gorman, Yount, Molitor and Rollie. Thanks for the amazing break sir.
Wow these cards look so good!!!
Happy Birthday Gaylord Perry, and you pulled his card! I never really cared for '81 sets, but since the card industry is booming again they're getting more of my attention. Still seems kinda pricey for a 1981 Topps box, but, 40+ years old, can only go up! Some nice pulls !
After 41 years I got this set today. Like all the other kids my age I too purchased these at a little neighborhood store. I didn't necessarily care for the design back then but I love them now. Kind of like the 1981 football set that design didn't thrill me either but I knew even as an 11 year old they looked better than the 1980 cards. It seems with the 82 Topps football set and baseball set the quality got better. That's when I started delivering papers to earn my own sports cards but the 1981 cards were the first ones I bought. I went back and got all my football sets from the 1980s but this is the only baseball set I will purchase. The Fleer and Donruss sets were horrible. Thankyou B& B sports cards.
Great looking cards in that well preserved box.
This is the first year I collected baseball cards as a kid and I bought the heck out of these packs! I even talked my mom into buying a whole 36 ct. box, promising to do chores for packs. Man that was hard to see that box setting there and not being able to open the packs!!
I wonder if the miscut card has any value? Do people even collect those? 🤔
Thank you for the break Erik, really enjoyed watching and participating! Yes the Rock Raines RC will make its way to SGC next submission 🙂 Using the One Touch was a classy move! So I have completely switched from PSA to SGC. Think their grading is spot on most times and the turnaround time is fantastic. Last order from the day I sent to the day I received back was under 10 days!
So I am a huge Cubs fan and my favorite pulls were the Rick Sutcliffe (second year card), the Bill Buckner (first year in Cubs uniform I believe), and the Leon Durham RC 🙂 Thank you for hunting down older boxes for the Throwback Thursdays series! Appreciate, db
Ray at least a 9 on your Raines!! Happy for you.
@@randyworden5232 I am thinking a 10 @
SGC, you see the colors on that card? the centering was very good,
corners looked good, surface as
well, I paused the video
a few times…..I think you got a real shot

Awesome video Mr.Jabs...I love your channel!!
Thank you!
I really enjoyed this video, I really like the 81 topps
Great video Jabs, thank you for the flashback to my childhood
Gonna do some catching up on videos I missed today, and this is a great way to start! Love the old packs, always takes me back! Thanks for the video sir, always appreciated. 🙏
There can't be very many unopened boxes left in existence.
These were the first pack of cards I ever opened up! I remember the last 2 cards to complete the set was Amos Otis and Expos future stars with Raines. Had to trade a Reggie Jackson to a friend for both
Me and my cousin started in 1977 tops baseball always looking for rose bench any Cincinnati reds players hope some time you can rip some 1977 thanks for a awesome video GOD bless you
He opened a box of 1977 Topps a month ago. Just search for "1977" on his channel.
Yep, this brings back many fond memories. I opened lots of these back then. Thanks so much for sharing this!
Enjoyed the video, thank you. 😊
Cards look good, nice assortment
The Raines was sweet! Saved the box!!
the bad gum was on the bottom pack! you got it. heat or moisture, i would gamble on lower right stack...3rd pack down!
Man, that bump wills card was crazy! I wouldn’t mind miscuts from 81.
The 81 Topps cards are really. Was hoping to you pull a Ryan or Murray. Thanks Erik for a great break.
I was. 7 yrs old and. Yes I buy packs of these Cards
Hate to tell you but I was on my 2nd wife by that time.
Mike schmidt is about 700-800 in PSA 10
Ron Leflore in a Expose!!! I thought he only played for the Detroit Tigers!!! He was plucked straight out of prison!!! Super Fast!!!
Love that Rickey! Found mine at my folks place…thought I had it in great shape…ahhh nope, probably a PSA 3…but I got one lol
No Nolan Ryan? Darn…
Seen Tom Hume on your card he shops at our card shop
I never sent in or tried for any of the inserts, but I did write Frank Thomas and I received a signed paper pic of the Big Hurt....I was 11 and thought that was the coolest thing! It was Frank Thomas enterprises lol
Love that Tim Raines rookie card and that second year rickey Henderson card
You got a couple Pete LaCocks in there. That’s beautiful
Yeah buddy. I remember buying these packs in like 1986-87 at Kenny’s Coin Shop in Lower Burrell, PA for I believe .75 cents!! Wish I woulda bought them all!!
Great videos. Can’t wait for the auctions!!
You rock Erik, thanks as always for the entertaining video. Keep up the great work! -Bob G. (Philly)✌️☮️
That Bob Sykes cardinals card still gives me nightmares about when the yankees traded Willie McGee for him. One of MANY horrible trades the Yankees made during the 80's.
25 bucks a pack for a second year Ricky Henderson. I don't get it. What are the chances it's a 10 out 10.
Hey Jabs. I LOVED this video my man. Thank you again for another daily 🔥 of a box. By the way that Bump Wills OFF Center card was pretty cool looking how badly mis cut and centered it was which I’ve never seen one like that so definitely was a first time for that lol.
Love the videos!
I am guessing PSA 8 on the Henderson...overall really nice cards. I built a NMT-MT set of 1979 Topps and the centering was a challenge. That was more than 10 yrs. ago and spent so much I doubt if I'm break even yet. Got the idea when I picked up a sharp Ryan at a show.
I can't believe it!
My guess is that Rickey gets a 7.
This Was Great Cards Ever
The first year I started buying packs was 1981
Steve Stone was an announcer with Harry Carry for the Chicago cubs
I would like to see a throwback Thursday of an early to mid 80s box at a card show with available graders on site to see what these cards grade for.
I want that AUTO
Love 81 Topps but damn, at around $25 a pack it's hard to pull that value out of a typical pack. I was surprised to see they are going for that much.
Yea, at this point you are clearing paying about triple the real value for the nostalgia of opening an old pack.
Nice packs
Ted Simmons might have been considered the best catcher of his generation if it wasn’t for Johnny Bench. He was definitely before my time, but when you look at his stats for his position it makes me think he was forgotten about a little too easily.
Fun break. Is the 1981 box available?
Hey, being a Pirates fan have you ever heard the story of Alfredo Edmead? He played for the old Salem (VA) Pirates back in the early 70's and died after an on field collision. Youngest pro player to ever die IIRC he was 17 at the time. I remember watching the Salem Buccaneers back in the early 90's.
Sad story
Just found a ton of 80-84 at a yard sale!!!!! Big rcs galore, corners soft tho…. Ugh!!
When did they start making the gum smaller?
Awesome
Sweet!
$1000 for that box? Did it come with a gold bar or a judge rookie auto psa graded 8?
Hell....it better come with a voucher for 100 free lap dances.
Whys this box so much for a Raines, Fernando and Baines rookie and a bunch of star cards not worth that much? I wouldn't of paid $100 for this box
Rains and Valenzuela are high number traded.
Question how much is it to get your cards graded?
$50 at Psa, $30 at Sgc and most other places. I don’t know what Beckett is charging nowadays or if they are even accepting cards. These prices are per card. It’ll take Psa probably 6 months to a year to get it graded and sent back to you while Sgc can do it in a week.
Wow. Who would’ve thought I could get absolutely nobody in three packs?
right bro…..I was thinking the same……I mean 81 Topps is about the same as 86 Topps, just second year cards & one rookie, I can’t believe the Henderson is that much in a PSA 10, I mean you could’ve got that card for a few bucks raw anywhere lol
you got a Dave Kingman…..80 cent card 😅
Steve Hart knew.
@@dwightschrute3716 yeah. I’m not sure what I was thinking 😆
My first year I got a pack. I was 6 years old.
I hate breaking pre 1985 wax, alot of commons in those boxes. i got an 83 topps from bbce back about 10 years ago, got a nice sandberg and gwynn but the other star cards were way off centered, i had more hits out of my 1985 topps bbce, 2 pucketts, 1 clemens, mcgwire, pete rose(2 of each) 3 don mattinglys. my 83 topps had an off centered ripken and an off centered henderson, the only hits i got were a sandberg(60/40 centering on front) and a gwynn( pretty nice, might be a psa 9) but any wax i had before that was trash.
Just out of curiously does anyone know why all the team logos are photoshopped on the front of the box but the cards have them?
Nice
Sunday night live Saturday showdown! P:EASE!
I used to combine all the gums and have a wad in my mouth.
“All the gums”…SMH
@@smartluck100 - haha! Didn't even occur to me, I won't correct it.
I bet you did...bwhahahahaha.
Mom used to make me...like we had to eat crappy cereal if we bought the box for the Post Cards.

Tom Herr I think is the last player to have 100 or more ribbies and less than 10 homers. In 1985 he hit 8 homers and had 110 ribbies iirc.
Cool
Hello jabs
I've never seen these in person
Leon Durham.
23:39 Ricky Henderson
Wonder if John Wathan will make an appearance😊
Kool
The pack that had the moldy gum had a hole in the wrapper. That's how moisture got into only that pack.
Great
Good
Yo!
I'm having a hard time finding a Psa 10 1981 stick of gum.
I watched Ted Simmons get elected to hall of hame
Do they still have 1981 Rack Packs?
