I remember opening 1981 packs as a kid. I was 11 at the time. Me and some of my friends would go collect aluminum cans from the parks and neighbors and then recycle them, and with the money we would go down to 7-11 and buy packs of these cards (yes 7-11 use to sell Topps baseball packs) . I still have mine to this day. Fun throwback!
No 7-11 near me as a kid but the locally owned deli had cards as well as far back as the 70's. 81 was my first year buying cards though as a kid. BMX bikes down to the deli for some candy and cards was always a good time as a kid.
For me it was riding my bike to UDF and asking the lady behind the counter if the new baseball cards were in. Same lady, every time, from 77 to 82. The excitement when she would say, "I think they did come in. She would go in the back and emerge with a sealed box and open it for me. Those are great memories!
Thanks for the memories. I started collecting in 1980. My older cousin started me in the hobby. He started in the mid 70's. Sadly, my 1980 and 1981 Topps were damaged in a move and my little brother using what remained to build forts for his Army men. I've forgiven him since then. I'm still a fan but luckily I took care of my other cards from 1983 to the mid 90's. Always a pleasure watching your channel.
In first grade I collected these cards. It was the first exposure to baseball and football cards and I memorized every stat of every player of religiously. Just seeing the faces brings me back to my childhood. 1981 set. I collected for years after, but none stay indelibly Stamped on my mind like 81 baseball and 79 nfl
Going through some of my old cards I bought in 2008 and I found a 2008 topps update Max Sherzer sleeved up in perfect condition. Been in the box for 14 years. They're going for $100 raw but thinking about getting it graded since it's in great shape.
Scherzer is a lock HOF. I live in Phoenix and you could win World Series with what the Diamondbacks have traded away for horrible return..including Goldschmidt..Dansby Swanson...Trevor Bauer, although he was distraction here so I guess they get a pass on that.
Lifting the top to reveal the packs is like peeling the plastic of a new electronic device, but even better 🥰. Love it, thanks to you and all the sponsors for sharing this.
Funny how you passed right over Pete LaCock! Best baseball name EVER!!!!! I like how that era of Topps baseball cards are all pointing the same direction and not backwards, sideways, upside down, etc.… I also wish would they would bring back that card stock.
This is the first year I collected baseball cards as a kid and I bought the heck out of these packs! I even talked my mom into buying a whole 36 ct. box, promising to do chores for packs. Man that was hard to see that box setting there and not being able to open the packs!!
Happy Birthday Gaylord Perry, and you pulled his card! I never really cared for '81 sets, but since the card industry is booming again they're getting more of my attention. Still seems kinda pricey for a 1981 Topps box, but, 40+ years old, can only go up! Some nice pulls !
Really enjoyed the box , I graduated h.s. in 1981. Saw alot my Brewers in there, meet Aaron, Stormin Gorman, Yount, Molitor and Rollie. Thanks for the amazing break sir.
After 41 years I got this set today. Like all the other kids my age I too purchased these at a little neighborhood store. I didn't necessarily care for the design back then but I love them now. Kind of like the 1981 football set that design didn't thrill me either but I knew even as an 11 year old they looked better than the 1980 cards. It seems with the 82 Topps football set and baseball set the quality got better. That's when I started delivering papers to earn my own sports cards but the 1981 cards were the first ones I bought. I went back and got all my football sets from the 1980s but this is the only baseball set I will purchase. The Fleer and Donruss sets were horrible. Thankyou B& B sports cards.
Haha I swear every first pack between 79-84 was a Jerry Remy, 2B, Red Sox. Good times. Loved that year of cards with the little hats on them. They even depicted "square" hats for the Bucs.
These were the first pack of cards I ever opened up! I remember the last 2 cards to complete the set was Amos Otis and Expos future stars with Raines. Had to trade a Reggie Jackson to a friend for both
Gonna do some catching up on videos I missed today, and this is a great way to start! Love the old packs, always takes me back! Thanks for the video sir, always appreciated. 🙏
Yeah buddy. I remember buying these packs in like 1986-87 at Kenny’s Coin Shop in Lower Burrell, PA for I believe .75 cents!! Wish I woulda bought them all!!
Thank you for the break Erik, really enjoyed watching and participating! Yes the Rock Raines RC will make its way to SGC next submission 🙂 Using the One Touch was a classy move! So I have completely switched from PSA to SGC. Think their grading is spot on most times and the turnaround time is fantastic. Last order from the day I sent to the day I received back was under 10 days! So I am a huge Cubs fan and my favorite pulls were the Rick Sutcliffe (second year card), the Bill Buckner (first year in Cubs uniform I believe), and the Leon Durham RC 🙂 Thank you for hunting down older boxes for the Throwback Thursdays series! Appreciate, db
@@randyworden5232 I am thinking a 10 @ SGC, you see the colors on that card? the centering was very good, corners looked good, surface as well, I paused the video a few times…..I think you got a real shot

That Bob Sykes cardinals card still gives me nightmares about when the yankees traded Willie McGee for him. One of MANY horrible trades the Yankees made during the 80's.
Ted Simmons might have been considered the best catcher of his generation if it wasn’t for Johnny Bench. He was definitely before my time, but when you look at his stats for his position it makes me think he was forgotten about a little too easily.

Hey Jabs. I LOVED this video my man. Thank you again for another daily 🔥 of a box. By the way that Bump Wills OFF Center card was pretty cool looking how badly mis cut and centered it was which I’ve never seen one like that so definitely was a first time for that lol.

I hate breaking pre 1985 wax, alot of commons in those boxes. i got an 83 topps from bbce back about 10 years ago, got a nice sandberg and gwynn but the other star cards were way off centered, i had more hits out of my 1985 topps bbce, 2 pucketts, 1 clemens, mcgwire, pete rose(2 of each) 3 don mattinglys. my 83 topps had an off centered ripken and an off centered henderson, the only hits i got were a sandberg(60/40 centering on front) and a gwynn( pretty nice, might be a psa 9) but any wax i had before that was trash.
$50 at Psa, $30 at Sgc and most other places. I don’t know what Beckett is charging nowadays or if they are even accepting cards. These prices are per card. It’ll take Psa probably 6 months to a year to get it graded and sent back to you while Sgc can do it in a week.
Hey, being a Pirates fan have you ever heard the story of Alfredo Edmead? He played for the old Salem (VA) Pirates back in the early 70's and died after an on field collision. Youngest pro player to ever die IIRC he was 17 at the time. I remember watching the Salem Buccaneers back in the early 90's.
Met Ray Knight and George Foster when I was a kid and both of them were kid friendly and signed autos for every kid waiting for autos after the game. Pete Rose wasn't friendly, he pushed me out of his way to get in a corvette with a hot blonde.
I met Pete at a card show in the early 90s and he was very personable...but even more so to the young kids..a huge smile would break out on his face. The hall needs to let him in....and oh yeah to your point I lived in Cincy and he was a skirt chaser...as bad as Mantle.
This was in Houston but I was Reds fan when I was a kid. My dad took me and a friend to see them. This was in 1976. Didn't say he was a bad guy just not friendly by pushing me. It was disappointing for me being a huge fan. But that same game I met one of the 2 biggest jerk in baseball I've ever met and he played for Houston, Cesar Cedeno. The other unfriendly jerk was Mariano Duncan who threw the f bomb at my step son for asking for an auto after the game when he played for the Phillies. I had the pleasure of going off on him. @@markwilliams6394 that's unfortunate. Cedeno I knew was a head case...never heard that about Duncan. Pete despite his brash exterior I think has learned over the years.
Yes, I would agree with you on the Pete thing. I'm sure he got a little better with age but he was still kind of young and living it up. I probably would have been the same way.
