      If it has practical application by all means but for such uses certainly a helicopter is more suitable?

      @ivor I think they drive the pilot there suit him up, and then the pilot(?) acts as a paramedic who might, as you say, call a helicopter

Or potentially even lower people to the scene for example where the slope is steep enough that the helicopter just wouldn't have a rope long enough to reach them without the rotors being dangerously close to the terrain.

      @@Valks-22 I'm sure I saw that it was a specially trained paramedic who could respond which would be quicker than waiting on a much more expensive helicopter which may already be going to other calls. Most of the videos I've seen have been in conjuction with Royal Marines boarding ships and rigs. I think the inventor was maybe RM.

      We could make them safer and more sophisticated. But it's allways going to have the problem of needing to carry human + fuel, and just brute force hovering through thrust alone being horribly inefficient.

      @@LK-ho1dg With our understanding of physics, there is no practical way to hover a human in the air without the current technology shown. So yes, for now we'll always have to worry about the jetpack having enough fuel and thrust to carry a human.

    For anyone interested, I happened to ask for the price for training a few Month ago, and they replied this:
    Flight Training is £5000 ($6500) per person per day + VAT. We host up to three pilot candidates in one day which speeds up competency as you learn together. Typically by the end of one day, most are able to achieve a basic hover with the tether visibly slack.
    Flight Experience is £2000 ($2600) per person per day + VAT. This involves a tour of the Gravity Lab, a flight demo by one of our Pilots and two powered runs on the tethered Training Rig to give you that mind-blowing visceral experience.

      thing is the danger of falling is it's all about velocity, falling from 50 feet is quite survivable (not walk away in one piece survivable, but leave the hospital after 2 weeks with a broken leg survivable)

      If it doesn't already, They could reserve bit fuel. When rider falls through sky, They could use the fuel in combination with height sensor and gyro to stop rotation and give a parachute effect. Although it would only work if you stretch your arms else you'd burn yourself.
      Then only danger would be accidently burning yourself / falling on back.

    I'm always genuinely impressed by those guys, because you're essentially lifting quite a lot of your body weight on to your arms for minutes at a time, while making millimetric adjustments to keep the thrust vectoring in check. Very cool.

      @@db5094 Even if the video of the pros doing it, they're leaning at something like 20-30 degrees from upright, so the vast majority of the lift is still coming from the back.
      There's a reason they've got a larger thruster on the back

    I think what caught my attention the most was how close the assistants could stand to Tom with the engines running and not get frazzled to a crisp…that suggests that when the bugs get ironed out, it'll need a lot less room to take off and land than one might initially think 🤔

    The man’s point of “human brains can learn this entirely new thing very quickly” is incredible. That’s one thing that makes us so very different from any other animal, and is also why I’m not that worried about “AI” right now - they’re not even close to being as adaptable as us.

      IDK if it's much usable with just 4 minutes of flight time. Keep in mind that you don't only need to get there, but also return to base, which means the range of operation is even less than 4 minutes.
