  • Welcome back to the Cozy Log Home DIY series! In today's episode, we're diving deep into the world of home construction, comparing two popular methods: log home building and traditional stick framing. Whether you're planning to build your dream home or just curious about different construction styles, this episode is packed with valuable insights.
    Pros of Log Homes:
Aesthetic Appeal: Log homes offer a classic, rustic look that is hard to replicate with other materials.
Natural Insulation: The thickness and density of the logs provide excellent natural insulation, keeping your home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.
Durability and Strength: Properly maintained log homes can last many generations, withstanding harsh weather conditions.
    Cons of Log Homes:
Maintenance: Log homes require regular maintenance, including staining and sealing to protect against moisture and pests.
Cost: Typically, building a log home can be more expensive than a stick-framed house due to the materials and specialized labor.
    Pros of Stick-Framed Homes:
Flexibility in Design: Stick framing offers more flexibility in architectural design and modifications.
Cost-Effective: Generally, these homes are less expensive to build and maintain than log homes.
Quicker Construction: The construction process for stick-framed homes is usually faster due to the availability of materials and ease of construction.
    Cons of Stick-Framed Homes:
Energy Efficiency: While advancements have been made, stick-framed homes can still lag behind in energy efficiency compared to log homes without additional insulation.
Soundproofing: These homes may require extra insulation to achieve the same level of soundproofing as log structures.
Join us as we explore these construction styles with real-world examples and expert insights. By the end of this episode, you'll have a clearer understanding of which building method suits your needs and preferences. I live in the PNW and you can cut down dead trees to use for logs... or use dead logs that are down for log homes. The issue there is going through the dead logs to see which ones are good to use. I have been watching countless videos on guys notching and building with logs, and those channels have exploded...but.... I understand the time limit with your busy channel and life. You can only do what you can do.

Cody. I recommend covering your logs with opaque plastic, such as lumber wrap, to protect them from the sun and the rain, if you are going to leave them for a while. It will prevent discoloring before you can get them treated.
I built a 3000² ft. split level home in BC in the 80s from scratch with 20" swamp spruce. Even my joists and purlins were logs with 1½" tongue and groove flooring. Logs present a lot of one off issues everywhere for wiring, plumbing, and scribing for fitting doors and walls. It's a lot of extra work. But far more unique and homey.

I remember you building the log cabin, watched the whole thing. I believe that many would watch but as you said, the world has changed. As to the setback, crazy that YOU buy the land and they can rezone it to the point that you can’t use it, BUT they will still tax you for that “river front property”. Even if YOU pay for it, it’s not truly yours. Be Safe Out There

Depends on the environment in the Pacific Northwest trees are everywhere whereas the MIdwest there aren't very many forests and what few forest there tend to be heavily protected besides both stick and frame and log home building concepts are the same strength so just depends on the environment and what resources it has available especially when it comes to places like the two tornado allies.

I think your next purchase should be a pompadour toupee....of course that'll take changing the diet of the hair "donors' to achieve such magnificence. Although I'm sure the cost per "piece" would be higher; a man of your stature and circumstance should be able to pull that off. Of course you'd have to work with your 'fabricant de chapeaux' to have the appropriate hat to complement such a hair peace but I think you could do it.
