Great reaction! I’m really glad you discovered her full vocal range which was little bit in the shadows with Aurora to favor a perfect harmony.
This recording was in fact made in Belgium, in a chapel of a cemetery from Brussels, the belgian capital.
Cathedrals are way bigger in fact.
As you suspected rightly, she is a total artist package.
As an instrumentalist, she plays beautifully autoharp, guitar, cello, piano, banjo, vocoder, …
She discovered autoharp when she was 14yo, because she was/is a fan of Joan Baez.
She likes to play mainly acoustic songs all by herself but has some great songs with 2 other girls ( electric bass and drums) as well.
As a songwriter, she took the lead and composed and wrote all songs of her second album (she did it for only 2 songs from her first one) and is now finsihing to record her soon-to-be-released 3rd album. Her second album Les Failles was elected best france newcomer album in 2020 and one year later Pomme was elected best female artist of 2021.
Her lyrics are very poetic, she is used to write sad songs but she said there is always hope in it, sometimes it his obvious and at the surface, sometimes you have to dig down to find it.
She also, as Aurora, has some connection to the nature but in her case she uses the nature analogy to speak about her state of mind or her own story.
This reflects in the titles of her songs. For example:
    - Les oiseaux/ the birds
    - les cours d’eau / the flaws
    - La lumière / the light
    - les Sequoias
    - La lavande / the lavender
    - Soleil soleil / the sun
    - …
I will post a separate comment with her french lyrics and the english translation for Les Oiseaux.
The song is about Montreal and the quebec region in Canada, how restful and uplifting this place is. She found there a second home and now lives 6 month there and 6 months in France.
I will also post a comment with some recommendations for your next reaction to her, you will discover how (multi) talented she is. I really believe she is as amazing as Aurora. They will for sure make a great pair if they continue to collab.
By the way, Billie Eilish told on a french radio she is a great fan of Pomme and transmitted her phone number to her.
Final note here: Pomme’s real name is Claire Pommet so you see where she found his scene nickname 😀 pomme means Apple in french.

T'as su m'accueillir dans tes bras, me guérir
    Lyrics translated in English
    The Birds
    Verse 1]
If the streets are so big
    It's to breathe
I have a bird in my stomach
    I transported it
    To you to save it
    When on your lashes falls
    A sailing snowflake
    It's the cold that dresses
    The roofs of the house
When the sky makes you gifts
    [Chorus]
It's an ideal place, for the birds
    They come to rest there
    When their heart is big
    Verse 2]
    I knocked at your door
    Without warning you
In the age of dead love
You knew how to pick me
In your arms to heal me
I will come back to stretch out
    Near the Parc Laurier
If you know to wait for me
    We will get married
Somewhere in the month of May
    Chorus]
It's an ideal place, for the birds
    They come to rest there
    When their heart is big
    [Verse 3]
To my ideal anchorage, after the chaos
I come to find you, like the birds
Ah, ah ah ah, ah ah
    Ah, ah ah ah, ah
Ah, ah ah ah, ah ah
    Ah, ah ah ah, ah
    Hmm, hmm-hmm

Pomme has such beautiful songs 🥹 they are so so well-written, I would recommend you to look up the translations to fully enjoy them.
French is a very poetic language when it’s “well used”. In case you didn’t know, there’s a sort of sub-genre in France (it’s kind of “dead” now) called “chanson à texte”, which is basically the coexistence of poetry and music. Lyrics are predominant in the song, and most are poems adapted into songs or songs written by actual poets (such as “Les Feuilles Mortes” sung by Yves Montand and written by Jacques Prévert, Léo Ferré’s “Verlaine et Rimbaud” and “Les Chansons d’Aragon”, etc).
I think this deep relationship with lyrics/songwriting kind of forged French people’s and singers’ love for impactful lyrics with an emotional delivery. You’ll hear less “big voices” in France (as in singers like Aretha Franklin, Christina Aguilera, Bruno Mars, John Legend, etc.), but more vocalists who adapt their vocal technique to support the lyrics. Sometimes minimizing it to express weakness and fragility.
I’ve come across many non-French people who would disrespect some of our greatest (old) French singers because “they lack technique”, but I think these people just don’t have the chance to connect with the message the singers want to share. Perhaps the musical approach is just too different in France.

Fascinating context! Thanks for sharing. Any other contemporary artists you'd recommend who exemplify what you're talking about particularly well?

    • @n0-n4m3e
      @n0-n4m3e 2 роки тому +3

@@RustyGonzo Sure! I have plenty song recommendations with different charms:
      - *Corps* by Yseult (“Body”) - the song is about the struggles of loving yourself and your body as you are. I think the emotions are especially well delivered even if you don’t understand the lyrics!
      - *La Femme Chocolat* by Olivia Ruiz (“The Chocolate Woman”) - the song is a whole metaphor of, well, sex LOL but the lyrics cleverly “censure” it by using chocolate and its image of “pleasure” as means of conveying the message. Also could be interpreted as a woman worrying about gaining weight and the possibility of her lover no longer loving her because of that.
      - *Mon Coeur, Mon Amour* by Anaïs (“My Sweetheart, My Love”) - representative of irony/sarcasm in French music 🥲 it’s a “hate” song towards couples, from the point of view of a (petty) person who’s single! Also mocks the way loving couples behave lol (the lyrics are funny, but it’s even funnier in the live version)
      - *Désolé pour hier soir* by Tryo (“Sorry for yesterday evening”) - another unserious song haha, but it’s more of an example of storytelling in French music. It’s basically a song about a man discovering from his friends of all the shameful and humiliating things he did the night before, when he was drunk!
      - *Mon Frère* by Daniel Lévi & Ahmed Mouici (“My Brother”) - it’s part of the 2000 French musical “Les Dix Commandements” (“The Ten Commandments”). It’s a powerful and emotional dialogue between the two brothers Ramses and Moses, that eventually leads to their reconciliation and separation ( here’s a performance of it: ua-cam.com/video/mdpA5E6q_cI/v-deo.html ).
      Other artists I recommend:
      - *Tim Dup* - mostly for his lyrics, as they’re basically poetry (his style is a hit or miss since it’s pretty experimental at times ngl)
      - *Francis Cabrel* - famous for his touching ballads and beautifully written songs! He’s quite famous in France :)
      - *Indila* - peculiar vocal technique, I especially recommend her 2014 album!
      - *Juliette Armanet* - another singer with a peculiar voice! I think she’s more representative of the French pop scene nowadays.

Thanks for all this context and recommendations! I will dare make a VERY bold comparison, but when I first heard Pomme's "On brûlera" I felt 'something' that reminded me of Edith Piaf's "Hymne a l'amour" - not the voice, but something about the way both use it to interpret each word and deliver emotions. I didn't know it was a French thing, but it's amazing to know, because now I will be able to read further and find more music. Stuff like this makes me extremely grateful of understanding French :)

    • @n0-n4m3e
      @n0-n4m3e Рік тому +1

@@auroradlg154 Oh I see what you mean! Actually I’m pretty sure one of Pomme’s inspirations is Edith Piaf (along with Barbara) so you’re not that far off!
There are many things I could say about Pomme, but one of the things that made me love her is the deep connection between human and nature in her music. Just listening to the simplicity and poetry of her text, coupled with the mostly acoustic instrumentals and her soothing vocals gives me the urge to go into nature or just admire the world around us. I think her music is very humane and that’s what makes me connect with it more!
By the way if you want to dig more into the French music I mentioned, I recommend digging into the indie scene rather than the most popular artists. Tim Dup is a really good one already (his texts are chef’s kiss honestly, just pure delight by themselves), but I would also recommend Pi Ja Ma, Léonie Pernet, Voyou, Sofia Nolin, Foé, Alma Forrer, also Thérapie Taxi for a more “mainstream” sound (and a more “vulgar” tone to their texts lol).

The kind of cathedral you're talking about (big gothic ones) is especially found in northern France and Europe, in the south these are a bit smaller roman style, but beautiful as well.

Sorry I just left you a long comment on the video you made about her duet with Aurora. Don't worry your pronunciation is perfect and she can also write in English :) Her evolution is stunning but I'm still looking for live videos with a good song and that"s not easy... By the way she's very creative and her universe is very rich and deep. She's a composer and a songwriter, also a producer of her own music. Her universe is kind of magic and full of poetry and emotions. Thank you so much for sharing this.

Hello Valerie, I first got to know and love Pomme through AURORA. I don't understand a word of French. But I do not care. Her beautiful voice and the wonderful music are enough for me. When I have time, I look for the lyrics and let Google translate them for me. I'm not sure that's always right. But that's how I understand a few things. Many songs are sad.
I can recommend the following songs:
    - On Brûlera - ua-cam.com/video/ySAsCIyp90Y/v-deo.html - It's about lesbian love
    - Pauline - ua-cam.com/video/vDn4tf0-CpI/v-deo.html
    - Une minute - ua-cam.com/video/JdoUHEwNtQI/v-deo.html - Pomme plays a guitar and choir
    - "Göttingen" - ua-cam.com/video/dhrBINKuTE4/v-deo.html - Pomme with an orchestra - a declaration of love to the German city "Göttingen"
    - Désenchantée - ua-cam.com/video/8i33JhPCsMA/v-deo.html - Pomme live with the guitar - title "disillusioned"
    - Grandiose - ua-cam.com/video/6BStGmBt3a8/v-deo.html - live
    --The song starts like this:
Since I don't have the right
I want a child in my belly.
    I certainly should sometimes
Hide this lust, so great and threatening.
Ever since my friends lied to me
Tell me that I am like the others
I want a child in my belly
That we love each other, that we have a (Grandios) great life.
    -- (chorus)
(Grandios) Great the life I invented
    To you,
The life that is sold to us well mapped out.
Such a life does not exist
    ah...
    Have a nice day and
    Greetings from Germany
