This video was really very helpful and informative in getting in to shooting, yes it’s a bit out of date with some of the facts but it was filmed a few years back now. Thanks to this video i applied for my SGC “ Shotgun Certificate “ it’s not as complex or intimidating as you may think applying for a license. I hope this helps anyone out there thinking of joining this sport.

If a sportsman true you'd be
    Listen carefully to me …
    Never, never let your gun
    Pointed be at anyone.
    That it may unloaded be
Matters not the least to me.
When a hedge or fence you cross
Though of time it cause a loss
From your gun the cartridge take
    For the greater safety's sake.
If 'twixt you and neighbouring gun
Bird shall fly or beast may run
Let this maxim ere be thine:
    "Follow not across the line."
    Stops and beaters oft unseen
    Lurk behind some leafy screen.
    Calm and steady always be:
"Never shoot where you can't see."
You may kill or you may miss
But at all times think this:
    "All the pheasants ever bred
Won't repay for one man dead."

Laws outside the US are crazy hahah. I never realized it till now. In New York I need nothing to buy a shotgun. No license or wait time. Just go in, fill out a form, they do a background search to make sure you're not a wanted criminal. Comes back ok, walk out with the gun. No requirements on storing in your home either. Kind of bonkers if you think about it. Then again, you rarely hear about a crime committed using a shotgun. Always a handgun. For handguns there's a wait time.

I'm amazed at how unbureaucratic and easy it seems to be to get out hunting - learn to shoot and get in some practice at a local clay club, pop down the cop shop to pick up a licence and hey presto, off you go... But 2 specific questions: 1) If you're after vermin (which was mentioned in the video and I assume foxes and rabbits fall into this category), you'll not be shooting at above a 45° angle and 2) what is the shot made of - hopefully you'll not be spraying lead pellets all over the countyside?

    • @TheBCSledder
      @TheBCSledder 8 років тому +2

Suggest you teach a friend with mini shells or a .410. Forget flying targets until you get the sights down on paper ones.

12 or 20 bore........new guy or not in the know. Yes they are NOW the most popular. For years........the 16 bore was king of the upland world in your part of the globe. But it fell out of favor because of the mods done to the 20 bore. But a heavy 20 blows-out its pattern at range and has a long shot string. Something a 16 bore does not suffer from.
We in the 16 bore community are looked down upon and poo pooped for the lesser amount of shot thrown by our weapons. But if you look at driven Pheasants, the load to use is usually 1 oz. of whatever size of shot. 16 bore is perfect for 1 oz. of shot. Best loading for the gauge.
16 bore fell-out of vogue because of the 20 bore. Supposedly lighter and better handling than the old 16 that your grandad had. But usually Grandad had a very good 16 bore.
In the States, it is much the same. 16 has been passed-up for super 20 bore. Which will blow the center of the pattern out because of projectile stacking. The best loading and shot for bird/once is a 16 bore with 1 oz. of charge. Unless you are going for waterfowl. That changes everything.

oi bruv I just applied for me shotgun license so I put on this 17th century peacoat to talk to youtube in the least threatning way possible. I hope govna at Scotland yard will allow me to have such a devastating weapon. Cheers

From a perspective of the OTHER side of the pond, ........you must have pretty daft idiots that want to shoot. Most of this I learned from relatives or from being at a gun club. But then again, we have the people who would be screaming 'Reset' after a bad experience. This is not a video game. Do not expect your skills to transfer-over to the real world. If you want to make that headshot on a Red Deer, you must practice a lot. Like for two years to get to where you can place the bullet within one inch at 200 yards ALL THE TIME. Takes time and money. And a lot of practice. Not for the faint of purse. The same for shooting game birds. Birds are really harder. Deer just stand there.
Safety and etiquette are learned from your elders. Listen to the drafty old dodgers or you will FAIL! This is not COD! This is real life and if you goof-up and trigger your gun while someone is in the path, you will get to see what your grandfather's saw on the beaches of Dunkirk.
    Enough of the nasties.
Listen to what your coaches are trying to tell you. Practice what they tell you to do. Then go to a shooting range to practice. Listen to the coaches there. Shoot a lot of shells.
The more you shoot, the better you get. After you break 19 or so on the course with ease, then you are ready for live game shooting. Not before.
    Have fun!
