Update so far...as I can see for us not saving anymore cash but showing how much we use in detail. For us don't think we can do anything more to save money bar turn everything off
Good to know you are already optimised though.
I have only had my smart meter for 3 days but the person who fitted was very kind, helpful, and polite
Great to hear.
I noticed that if you have an issue with your account and Octopus have to sort stuff out like mine was ,the mini details are lost on the app and you have to reinstall.
Very useful as it gives near instant power flow and allows me to monitor my solar energy flow without the 5 minute delay my invertor has.
Thanks for the info
My Smart meter has lost signal to the WAN. I wonder could this be a way of transmitting Smart Meter data back to Octopus via the internet?
Can you link it to Home Assistant?
Yes I believe so, but not something I have done personally.
Is it working better with EV charging via intelligent Octopus Go tariff? with this tariff it can schedule smart charging outside off-peak hours. Although it is being confirmed by Octopus if that happens then will be charged on off-peak rate rather peak rate but in reality the usage cost in Octopus app is not reflecting that. I have to wait for the monthly bill to see what i been charging exactly. Octopus said if that happens then they will refund the extra cost, not sound ideal to keep tracking down what happening every month.
The home mini doesn't really help with working better with any particular tariff, it just replaces the In Home Display, and gives you better access to real time info, although not the tariff / pricing.
I personally use Intelligent Octopus GO and confirm when it does the peak charging you do get billed at the cheaper rate, but like you I am often dubious how easy it is to track that.
Is it possible to have an Octopus IHD and an Octopus Home Mini working at the same time, can they co-exist?
Yeah no problem at all.
Had my smart meter fitted two weeks ago. Last week it said I used £21 for the week. I pay between £350 and £500 a month and I have 16 solar panels. If the IHD is correct I have been being overcharged for years.
Is your account showing as in credit though? As unless you are being billed highly based on estimated costs, the money is still available, just an inappropriate Direct Debit is setup.
I got mine a coupleof months ago. Theone thing I find really annoying is showing how much i'm using £££'s, for instance in Live view I can only usage in Wh. For days, weeks months and year ts just inconsistent. ie I can see costs for this week and last but not the week before, the week before that is fine. There's nothin Octopus can doapparently after multiple conversations in X. Thinking about a rPi with a small display that uses the API, or see if there's a Home Assistant addin
Cheers for sharing, its still certainly more of a beta thing, but I think its better than the IHD.
Very useful video. I have two questions, firstly whilst I see you need to enable bluetooth on your phone to connect initially does the mini subsequently link to your phone via wi-fi/mobile network once setup is complete allowing bluetooth to be turned off (I don't leave bluetooth on as it flattens my phone battery really fast). Also is there any evidence to show that the Octopus mini is secure and doesn't pose any risk to network security?
Thanks for watching.
Regarding the first point, after the initial setup you phone doesnt need to be connected at all.
The second point is a good one, and to be honest I dont know. I have an IOT VLAN setup on my network, so all those things are connected there with only Internet access, so something I have slightly less concern about to be honest.
Like a lot of bluetooth devices, mine comes up on my phone but wont pair. Tried 3 times so will have to leave it for now.
Disappointing, worked first time for me.
Can the Home Mini export data to other devices, such as a Raspberry Pi, for further off-line analysis
I believe it can integrate into home assistant.
Got mine today after a bit of silly problems (me being daft) I found the screen in the app to scan the QR code all set up now.....and here we go
Enjoy :)
Great video thank you. I've booked my Octopus Smart meter installation. If I switched suppliers in the future, would the IHD or the Octopus Smart Mini (depending which I choose) still work? Could I opt for both an IHD AND an Octopus Smart mini do you know please? TIA 🙂
The IHD should definitely work, but the Smart Mini communicates back to Octopus, so wouldn't work with another supplier at this time.
@@SpectrumGeeks thank you!
Does the mini use less electricity than the display monitor? I turn the display monitor off overnight but assume it’s best to leave the mini on all the time?
To be honest I don't know for sure. I do have a USB energy meter, but its still boxed up somewhere.
However, I would assume it uses less for the simple fact it has no screen to power, however you know what they say about assumptions :)
I have a geo app, and it works similarly to a mini app. Anyway, I signed up for the mini a while ago. I may get it soon as well.
Fingers crossed.
I requested one 1 month ago and got it few days ago , worth filling in tne form or contact them by email to see if they recieved your request for one
Hi, thanks for this clear information. I have just set up ours on my phone & wondered if I can also connect to my wife's phone by using the same procedure so that we both have access?
If you install the Octopus app and use the same credentials it should work fine.
@@SpectrumGeeks Thanks, will give it a go.
I had smart meters installed by Octopus yesterday (2nd April) and the engineer left me with just a Mini and no In Home Display unit. Which was fine by me - it's set up quickly and works fine.
Excellent, the IHDs do seem pretty pointless to me, but appreciate not everyone geeks out about these things :)
@@SpectrumGeeks he did mention that I was 'obviously technically literate'.
I guess IHDs are good for those who can't be bothered with apps?
@@FFVoyager or those that don't have home internet, still a few people that don;t
Don't suppose there is any smart home connectivity with it ?
Afraid not.
Wondering what is the point of it or the IHD for that matter. You use what you use. The same with smart meters, never seen the point in them unless you have solar panels and send excess energy onto the grid.
Its handy if you like to track your usage, as well as understanding how much energy you are actually using. For example just last week when I took a look in the evening before going to bed I saw the house was using more energy than normal, turned out my son had turned the TV off but the playstation was still running.
@@SpectrumGeeks I see where you are getting at, but I still don't see the point, as you use what you use.
As for devices using energy when you don't realise they are on, I think the majoirty of people know what devices are left on.
That’s just it though… a lot of people don’t realise they’re using a lot of energy or what devices add phantom load. An IHD cane sometimes provide insight into it and shape better habits. It may not be the case for you, but that doesn’t speak for everyone.
I have a home mini but mine not working I think ist smart meter as home display never worked. Octopus is looking into it. Glad to see what it could do
Might need to be re-paired or something.
@@SpectrumGeeks Thank for suggestion tried to re pair . I also downloaded latest app . The mini is on my network and only half meter from smart meter . Looking forward to see if octopus can rectify.
I enjoy watching your u tubes and am starting on home assistant journey. Thanks again
@@andrewdeans2179I had a issue with mine too , octopus said they still had my old smart meteron tgere system which was interfering with the new one so once the removed that and unpaired the mini I went through the reset process and it worked
