ARP Odyssey vs. Minimoog ROUND 2: The Rematch!

  • Thank you, everyone, for your comments on the ARP Odyssey vs. Minimoog Funk Bass Face-Off! I decided that it would be a good idea to do another round with a more even comparison - the sounds are not 100% identical, but they're closer, and I basically played the same bass line on both synths (although I got carried away with the Moog ;P). To further level the playing field, the Odyssey was using the Mk2 (Moog clone) filter, and I defeated the envelope retriggering by patching Gate Out to Trig In to duplicate the Minimoog's legato response.
    Which one did you like better?
    What would you like to see me do next?
    The drums this time were provided by the venerable LinnDrum, but I still used the funky DMX hi-hats.
    Support me on Patreon! I spent all my money on synths and now I need to eat! :)

      Thanks Flux! I kinda like this particular ARP tone on this one better as well... I wish I'd had time to really get them closer like I had the previous day! Shoulda filmed it right then. They can sound nearly identical on certain tones (the Moog is always cleaner though, even with its overdriven filter input)!

    • @Fluxwithit
      @Fluxwithit 8 років тому +9

      mootbooxle yeah I think it's that muted diode over drive of the arp that makes the round funky tone appealing to me. The moog will cut through the mix more but the arp tone is just all sex on the floor bottom end lol. The hairs around the edge show clear signs of 1970's bush... a different brand of sexy back the. ;)

      Hey Moot, were using the (Korg only) overdrive feature of this ARP Odyssey in this particular patch??? I didn't think you were. BTW, I can get really close to this sound on my original Model 2800 white-face Odyssey even though it only has a 2-pole filter (even though you were using the 4-pole ladder filter in this patch).

      Most vintage analog sounds great along finally with a few convincing reissues, with the difference being programming. As with the other clip, I think the arp patch is better.

      I think a major point is that playing minikeys feels cramped, even thought you're a great player. So the minimoog version is better played, but the karp rocks

      Thank you! :) You know what, I kinda do too. Live, I use the Odyssey strictly for bass. But the foundation of most of my studio tracks for years has been either Minimoog or something imitating a Minimoog! It just sits perfectly in the mix.

    Mini is like the funk from wearing your dress shoes all day. Arp is like the funk from wearing your sneakers all day. Mini's a little politer a little darker. Arp's a little nastier=funkier.
    I'd like to hear you compare them on a creamy prog style lead sound I think Mini would win that?

    Christ, great playing. I felt like the Moog had a livelier sound coming in, but that was likely because of some filter settings. Doesn't matter. They're both legendary, and very different. I love them both.

  • @EricBBarker
    @EricBBarker 4 роки тому +2

    I feel like the tones could be made even closer. The Mini had more filter emphasis and contour, a bit more "quack", as it's known for. My holy grail would have been something about in the middle: Mini with the filter tamed back just a hair. Also, the mod wheel pitch LFO just plays a lot more funky, IMO. I love those mod pads, but the way you walk the mod wheel on the Mini is just perfection!
    Fantastically funky playing, btw!

    If I must cast a vote, it's gotta be the ARP, for me, but man, does that mini do it to me in my ear drums....I bet the ARP might set just a tiny bit better in a live mix. Oh, who knows😄 I'm almost more focused on your kick ass brilliant playing!

    • @mootbooxle
      @mootbooxle  8 років тому +1

      Thanks very much Corey! They definitely sit differently to one another in a mix. The Moog usually requires no EQ at all - it's just perfectly balanced! The ARP sometimes needs taming a little bit, but that's not a shortcoming, that's just part of its character. :)

    I'm thinking that the real winner is your playing!
    The Moog seems less dense & slightly more complex. Whereas the Arp is a simpler pallet... but more robust!
    Who can choose?
    You don't have to! Lucky guy :]

    • @mootbooxle
      @mootbooxle  8 років тому +5

      you're too kind! You described it very well, at least how it's presented here. I kinda wish I'd kept the Moog with just a single oscillator so there wouldn't be the phasing with the second osc blended in just a little. I had the sounds dialed in a lot closer the previous day, but I was in a hurry to film this before a gig in which I needed both synths so I didn't take time to really nail it. The next vid I do with both synths might be a little more academic...They look very different to one another on an oscilloscope! It's something to see.

    As much as the ARP has a fatter, deeper sound, the Minimoog sits better and is (to my ears) a more robust and interesting tone. If you A/B, I'd choose the ARP in the short-term, but when it's in the mix for a while, I appreciate the Minimoog tone more.

    The Moog got a short win for me on this one. Still I love the Arp. On some fast licks it seems the Odyssey keyboard makes it more tricky, less precise. Like if it gets in the way of your playing. I wish they remake a full size Odyssey one day. Great playing and dope funk contest !!

    Both synths are superb! Prefer the arp slightly (I own both) Build quality on the moog is better and sounds like a moog should. Arp feels cheaper, and IS cheaper, but just has something special about it that sonically i prefer

  • @nicholasfaith8999
    @nicholasfaith8999 6 років тому

    as a user/fan of both for many years, I've always considered them better suited for different sounds. with all the vco's on the minimoog engaged and cranked the odyssey is much, much thinner. the 2600 holds it's own extremely well but, the odyssey doesn't have the same weight in the low end. I've always considered the odyssey much better at mid range/aggressive leads than the mini. now that the reissues are out of the arp odyssey, Ive been thinking taking two modules and a really good keybed and building a wood/metal case so four odyssey vco's could be played from one phat keyboard. would have to rewire the pitch pads to one side or, a by pass so one side could switched off to respond to the other. also been looking at the schematics for the the moog sample and hold 1528 module, I think it would be a great add on. and while the modern cp control processor has some s&h and cool stuff to add, that original S&H processor from the 70s was really nice and unique.

    Both instruments have their pros and cons. If you want a fat bass that sits well in the bottom of a mix, then use a Minimoog. If you want the bass to be sharp, punchy and prominent in your mix then use an Odyssey. It's really apples to oranges here. :~)

    MiniMoog sounds "osc-driften" so it's make a lite "flanger" effect thus making the sound "fatter".
    Odyssey sounds just "dry" compared to Moog. And I think you better match the rythm with Moog (or Odyssey has some delays or slow attacks somewhere).

  • @MrPlayfilms

    In all fairness the Arp odyssey appears to be vintage and if so the Minimoog was a reissue, Bernie Worrell preferred the vintage Model D, seeing I’m a vintage connoisseur I’d like to see more of a match, the Korg odyssey would of been appropriate for this demonstration also different choice in patch programming concerning the Minimoog.Thank you Caesar

    Arp won this one (and the first match IMO)... Whether or not it was the patch that was responsible, the moog was much more nasal sounding and less pleasant with less character. The Arp also had more punch, despite the patch not letting the Arp's grit shine through as much. Thanks for this second comparison, it was interesting to hear the ARP holding its own. I don't own either, but it kind of reaffirms my suspicions from other times I have heard the ARP that I think the Arp is definitely my personal preference.

      Yeah I agree. They both sound really great, but on the Moog sound there was just a little to much resonance, that thinned out the sound just a little more than the ARP sound. I do really like the Moog smoothness though. It's a wonderful synth.

    • @mootbooxle
      @mootbooxle  8 років тому +3

      +MacXpert74 You're right. That's a typical Moog filter behavior...The ARP tends to keep the bottom end with the filter resonance cranked a lot more than the Moog, which makes it great for funky bass! The Moog can blow holes in walls with the resonance on zero, though. :)

      Yeah, I think that would be great! I have an old p-bass with flatwounds that I have no trouble getting funky with, but it's difficult to translate my bass-line sensibilities to keyboard instruments. Part of it is that I'm not as good on keys as I am with strings, but there are some stylistic differences in the phrasing of funky bass lines on keyboards that are elusive to me, and it would definitely be helpful to get it broken down by a guy whose style and playing I like.

    Not sure if it's the envelope setting, alone, but the odyssey has a much more transient envelope, from the sound. The moog sounds to be a bit smoother with the way that harmonics pas through the filter. Maybe the secret is to layer them 😎

    • @mootbooxle
      @mootbooxle  7 років тому +1

      Sauce_Aux that's a good observation. In this demo, I was trying to play to each instrument's strengths, and "smooth" is definitely the Moog's strong suit, but quite the opposite for the ARP! It can do smooth, but it's much better at dirty, brash sounds that cut through a mix. The Moog can scream too, of course, but it's the king of smooth!

    Heroic that you can play those thin Korg keys! I look forward to the module with velocity responsivity. Enough with these toy synths my Japanese heroes. We're not all equipped with your perfect miniature digits. Although, different women have different tastes...🤔

      Haha!! Thanks, I think! I'm used to playing harpsichord, which has the same sized keys (at least mine does). I checked out the module version - it's really nice! Very well built. The sliders are much stiffer in movement than the keyboard version, for whatever reason.

    Killer playing !! My 2C: If you put those two on a big system in a club, it's not gonna be even close. The Mini is so much more punchy and clean for basslines, no wonder it was THE choice for virtually all early 80s boogie productions. The ARP is very funky and has more lowend, but its "speaker farting all over the place" type lowed. It can be a thing, but if you try to make it work in a loud compressed 80s mix, double it with slap bass, add two guitars, percussion and of course a wall of vocals and horn blasts, it's gonna disappear. The moog will still hit like a freight train and you just have to bump the 100hz ish a bit. BTW - an excellent example of how ridiculously huge a single ramp Mini OSC can get... "I'll Be Good" by René & Angela !

      @@SlikkTim definitely. Minimoog is my bass of choice for probably 3 out of every 4 tracks I’ve produced in the last 8-9 years! I was really into the Odyssey for live playing for years, but eventually even that was supplanted by Minimoog, then I got really into the Pro-1 for bass for a good while, then I was using FM basses…it always comes back to the Mini.
      Odyssey has a weird DC offset that does some weird things in the subsonic region.

      @@mootbooxle Exactly ! I love the Pro One but you need to allow that bratty mf most of the mix. It's great for EBM type stuff. (Also it was the weapon of choice of the classic Ed Rush & Optical releases, although probably tweaked into oblivion in their EMUs.)
      The other "Magic" bass synth is the Juno 6 (on par with the SH101). I've done a ton of recordings with those and its amazing for electronic production.
      But in my opinion, the Moog bass is the only thing that will keep up once you start piling the arrangement up with "actual" instruments.
      You know, one day an in demand thrash & death metal producer from the Bay Area told me, as I was asking him tongue-in-cheek if he might be using a JCM800 for his next production, he replied, shrugging "Eh... as a producer, you come to learn some things are just not meant to be fucked with." I feel exactly the same for Moog bass ahah !
      How do you feel about Oberheim bass though ? I'm using it for a late 70s jazz rock project right now and I think I'm really digging it. Something about a 4 unison, 12db filter, I dunno. It's edgy yet thick.

    • @mootbooxle

      @@SlikkTim Big fan of Oberheim sounds in general! I also like good ol Prophet 5 unison bass for some things. A lot of those sounds are great as a complement to the main foundation bass tone.

    The resonance (emphasis) on the MOOG was higher, giving it added 'q', but either way, it depends on the sound you want. The MM sounds creamier and weighty, but the ARP has that dirty funk feel.

    the odyssey sounds FAT dang and very woofy, though the moog would be better in some contexts like where the bass should be clearer

    • @mootbooxle
      @mootbooxle  8 років тому

      Yeah! the Odyssey is fat city, it's kinda funny considering the Minimoog is regarded as "THE fat synth". I don't even have to EQ the Mini usually, but I do with the ARP. I left them both alone for this video tho. It's only fair!

    • @mootbooxle
      @mootbooxle  7 років тому

      JRussoC on which synth? The patch is set up a little differently on each, even though they sound similar! The ARP is using a single sawtooth here, while the Moog has sawtooth with a tiny bit of square mixed in in unison to add some beef. Quite a bit of resonance is used on each. The main thing is to have the filter envelope amount set fairly high. The sustain level of the filter envelope is roughly around 50%. Attack at zero, and adjust decay to taste. The actual filter cutoff is set pretty low, allowing the envelope to have full control over the filter cutoff shape. Hope that helps!

    Wow, this is like asking which of your kids you love the most! I have to say that I love the ARP just a tad more here, and it's probably because I would have said the Minimoog if you'd asked me what bass to use with funk. But here, the ARP just bounces like a frigging rubber ball, and the Minimoog seems a bit sterile or something. That's just me, tho. I do have an ARP and a Moog Sub Phatty so I have at least some basis for comparison, too. Either one of these synths can kill a funk line. Nice playing, too!

  • @funkmike

    Man, as in your previous video--they're both awesome. But the ARP has the edge for playing fast, greasy funk basslines. The Moog is for slower smooth jams.
