The reason why this happens because Japanese people can not pronounce L, so they use the closest thing they can make of it, R. For ex: “Jet Gatling gun” is pronounced in Japanese as “Jetto Gatoringu” See how the L was replaced with R. And your pronounce it as “Jet-toe-gat-or-ring-uh”

    • @aleanddragonITA

      The confusion is caused because
Zo & Lo are the same Kanji
So both Zoro & Zolo are pronounced Zolo
I read the Raw/Untranslated version of the Chapter where the bounty of the Main Characters are shown
And they are written with using our Western Alphabet
      And is Zoro not Zolo
I guess that the best way to translated it would be to write Zolo when it is pronounced & Zoro where it isn't
Zolo in Speek Bubbles & Zoro when it's a Descritive/Narrative Bubble
As Speek Bubbles represents someone pronouncing it where the Descriptive/Narrative would need the Western Spelling which Oda himself showed being Zoro

Happened with enel as well, in the anime they pronounce it eneru, Japanese syllables always end in a vowel (except n) so in order to write the name enel in Japanese you have to add a vowel at the end. Also there is no r or l sound in Japanese, it’s a weird combination or both sounds as well as d. So Enel became Eneru

It is sort of like how you cannot use Eternia because of He-Man in North America, or the word Edge because of copyright.

There’s no L in Japanese, so when you’re reading an English word like (for example)
Luffy, his name is ruffi,、ルッフィー…多分)、「ー」をありませんけど、知りません。So technically Luffy’s name is ruffī but we call it luffy. So same with Zoro but in reverse.
Because of how pronouncing “ra” and the following ra ri re ro involve letting the tongue touch the top of your mouth, it sounds like “La” and so on. You can search “how to pronounce r’s in Japanese” if you’re interested.

In french the first tomes of the one piece manga had GOOFY AS FUCK NAMES like "Terrence Sabrelong" (Terrence Longsword for Zoro)
    Pipeau (Liar for Usopp, ironic),
    Monkey D. Corentin,
Colonel Fumette (Sergent "smokery" for Smoker)
Or straight up DAMIEN for Chopper (if I remember well it's a Damien is a common french name for deers in french fiction)

Simply stating, in japanese the word or pronunciations "L" doesn't exist
"L" can be pronounced as eru
In luffy's case , the first word is Lu which is pronounced Ru
In zoro's case, its just the four kids dub's doing

I rather buy an original One Piece manga in Japanese than a VIZ one. Even though, I wouldn't be able to read it. That's how much the VIZ translation disqusts me. They've had over 20 years to get it right, and only have failed. Names and Proper Wording Matter!
It's not like edits in reprinted editions are a brand new idea in the publication industry. Look at different copies of The Hobbit and you'll be quite surprised.

even though i prefer "Reverie," i figure "Levely" is correct because during the anime's episodes about it, people were seen holding signs that said, in english, "LEVELY"

It’s also because Zoro is very similar to another popular swordsman named Zorro, with 2 “r’s.” They likely wanted to avoid copyright infringement.

Huh. I always thought it was so there wouldn’t be any kind of legal confusion with the character “Zorro”, a fictional swordsman clad in black created in 1919 (Antonio Banderas played a version of him in the 90’s). Who knew?

This isn't quite right. While the Japanese "ro" sound kind of sounds like the "lo" sound, it also sounds like "doe." Think of how you roll your "r's" in Spanish. So, while some people think it's a debate because it is a nebulous middle ground, there are right and wrong ways of romanizing Japanese. For example, no one says "enies robby" for "enies lobby" even tho it uses the Japanese "ro" sound in lobby. This can be hard with translations like "mother flame" and "mother frame" so there is reason to speculate with translations, but when it's something long established clarity will eventually rise. As well as "reverie" is an actual French word, where nobles gather in Mary Geoise, a place with a french name. Levely not only sounds stupid imo but isn't a word in english, japanese, or french. So tldr zolo bad

Though R and L a pronounced and writen the same, let's also keep in mind some characters/places are named after English or other European words.
So, Levely, Raftel...etc. are phonetically correct, but don't really make sense.
For Zoro/Zolo, I guess that doesn't really matter, unless he was named after Zorro the Masked Hero

4kidz One Piece is the worst thing I've ever heard! Lol it's so freaking corny and cringy I couldn't watch a full episode. I hated Sanji's voice actor the most, he was like some creep from NY

These debates for the names are just people mishearing it. Raftel isnt right, the name is Laugh Tale. The Katakana for it is "ラフテル" which is pronounced Rafuteru. Dont go off of the English dubs, go off of the Japanese characters such as the Kanji or Katakana

Oda borrowed the name as a homage from another excellent fighter, namely Zorro (the masked guy dressed in black that carves the Z with his Rapier). So "Zoro" is the only correct pronounciation despite the problems with L and R in japanese, since the author's stated intent was the homage.
