Hi Kim I have a slightly off the track question. In one of your videos you said for phrasal verbs stress the 2nd word like "pick UP" "go OUT" "take AWAY" what if there are three parts like "put up with" "get away from" which one to stress?
Hi Rivnat! For phrasal verbs that are three words long, you will stress the second word: put UP with, get AWAY from, give UP on, etc. Great question - I didn't want to make the video too complicated so I didn't talk about them. 😀

Couldja plz make a lesson on more feasible techniques to fast grasp native spoken content in songs or some movies. I mean it's ok for me to listen to Ted talks or Nat Geo Vids. Yet, when I come across such content, I just mess it up. I don only wanna understand audio highly-processed material cuz I know this wouldnt sound natural. Spent a lotta time workin on ma accent and learning loads of reductions. Still, I assume I'm miles away from the level I wanna ace. Really, I'm jonesin for takin in all spoken English. In order to better decipher native speech, you need to train your ear to hear the syllables that receive the most emphasis. In order to sound natural, you need to work on English rhythm and stress. My most recent videos explain this in more depth so be sure to check them out.

When "best" is linked to other words, the "t" is absorbed into the "th" sound, as in "That's the best thing that ever happened to me": bes-thing.
Yes, we tend to link words that end in the same consonants or consonants that have a similar mouth position. In some cases, the sound can even change, but it's more important to focus on the reductions first!

Hi Mary! As you know, intonation is extremely important, and it takes practice to get more comfortable with the rises and falls mid-sentence and at the end of sentences. You'll also need to practice sentence stress so that your overall intonation sounds more natural. If you want to practice at home on your own, you can find an article in English and practice reading it out loud with attention to stress and intonation. There are many different American accents. I speak with the general American accent, although you can hear my regional dialect in the way I pronounce certain short vowels. Remember, I'm an educator and I know how to speak clearly to be understood. However, if you follow my advice, you will be able to improve how you sound by focusing on what's important for clear communication.

That's an interesting question. English speakers tend to rest their tongues on the roof of the mouth. A dentist or a speech language pathologist would probably have a more thorough explanation!

While most Indians do not speak English as a first language, some do, and many Indians have been educated their whole lives in English and are near-native speakers. Because of the influence of other local languages, this gives them a regional dialect with its own characteristics and accent. In particular, Indian English tends to be syllable-timed with different intonation patterns, which is what you probably hear. Remember, even within English-speaking countries, you'll hear a lot of regional accents, some of which are quite strong. The Boston accent is one example. Other countries which have many native speakers who speak a more "global" variety of English include Singapore, Nigeria, the Philippines, Jamaica, Belize, and many others! Even New Zealand English and South African English can sound really different from the American/British accents. While these videos might not appeal to you if you're interested in working towards an American accent, they do help a lot of people who use English as a lingua franca, or a language of communication.
