    Yesterday, I put out the word to our six kids and their families that will happily use some of my stash to make them napkins. I made 24 yesterday, and I'm just getting started. We've used cloth napkins for many years, and most of theirs are looking sad. I hate the saying, "She who dies with the most fabric wins." Nope, she who uses her fabric to help make the world just a little nicer before she dies wins over and over again.

      I don't like that saying, either. It's just an excuse to hoard fabric. Whyyy??

      We have 5 kids(now 8 grandkids “. We were poor. One salary ( a pastor). No joke, a financially tough one. One of the things I did was cloth napkins. Each person had a few of their own. Being “poor” can make you quite clever. 😊

    I love precuts. But the thing about them is that they’re so pretty it’s hard to decide what pattern to use them on. So they sit there.

      Just make one.😊 You might be surprised and find yourself making another right after.
      I waited 3 or 4 years since I bought my first jellyroll that ended up only having 20 strips in it. I wanted to do a Jelly Roll race style. So, I collected my scraps, bought fat quarters, and filled the gaps. I ended up with a 60 x 80 inch top. And I'm ready to make another with some other scraps I've decided to cut into strips. I'm thinking of a Half Log Cabin for the next one. Fast, easy, and nice to look at. Not many seams to match, either. I'm hooked on the strips, and fat quarters gives me enough to cut into several half strips that coordinate.

      Many Lutheran churches have a quilting mission, where they make quilts ftom donated fabric and thread. They are sent to a warehouse in Minnesota,and from there they are distributed around the world wherever there are disasters. Oh, this one really hurts! I have too many kits of embroidery and quilts. I really want to make them, but I doubt I’ll live long enough to use them all. What a delima! I need the space back. My local donation center doesn’t take craft items or fabric. I happened to think today that there’s a sewist in the area who arranges sewing retreats a few hours away. I’ve decided that I’m going to contact her to see if they have a swap table. If so, I’ll pass them along to her so that people who will love them can have them. It’s still hard to let go of them, though.

    I no longer buy pre-cuts, for exactly the reasons Karen listed. I still have one layer cake to use up, and that's it, thankfully. I found some nice free online patterns to use them on Donna Jordan's videos from Jordan Fabrics. I'm sure there are lots of other sources as well.

    I sort almost all of my fabric into "kits" upon purchase. I keep them in clear boxes on my shelves, and that means I have no traditional "stash" of fabric sorted by color. I am always looking for patterns and when I find one for the box, it moves from a "kit" to my list of actual quilts I hope to make in the next few months. When Im almost finished with the quilt I am working on, I get out the box for the next quilt and match the fabric to the pattern to see what else I need, and then order that so it will be ready when I am. By the time Im almost finished with a quilt it is invigorating to look at the next project and it motivates me to finish the one I am on so I can get to it. Also, there is no down time after making a quilt to figure out what is next, unless I want a break. I find this system efficient and works the way I like to work.

    UFO's and kits are not a big problem. I have a problem in saying NO to anyone who asks ' can you use this unwanted fabric in your charity quilts'. As a result I used up a lot of my time and energy last year on projects that didn't give me a lot of joy. Sounds harsh but this year I hope I'll learn to say no. Am loving the challenge again. Karen, you're a treasure.

      I feel the same way. Although I don't typically buy precuts beyond fat quarters, which I find really easy to just add to my stash in the right category. I have been given lots of no longer wanted fabrics by people and fortunately I find that if I haven't used them in 2 years, out they go. But you mentioned feeling the pressure to work on things and you weren't feeling the joy. I'm getting better at that, but last year was tough for me. We had a really rough 2022 financially, both my husband and I work from home. But we both took outside jobs while continuing our home jobs (I machine quilt for people) and everything got really overwhelming. I was starting to feel really miserable quilting for people because I couldn't touch my own projects and everything was just getting dumped into my sewing room. This year as I started decluttering after Christmas I had to make some decisions about how I handle things on the sewing/quilting end and I feel such a sense of relief and peace. Now I'm excited to finish up and get back to sewing and quilting and I will be more judicious about gifted fabrics. It's not that I won't take them at all, but I'm only keeping what I want and getting rid of the rest right off the bat, and I will do charity projects at MY pace. Lots of groups, i.e. senior centers and quilt guilds, are happy to take on the fabrics

    • @pegasusquilts

      I sort the gift fabrics right away and donate those I don't want. When I do charity quilts for my guild I stick to very simple patterns or UFOs I've lost interest in. And alternate them with things I do like.

    I have a bunch of kits from two of my favorite designers, for similar reasons: I like the finished result and thought it would be easier to buy a kit with all the required fabric. BUT... I was at a quilt retreat showing off a lot of my tops (I like piecing, I don't like quilting, so I store my tops until I need a quilt for a gift, then I get it quilted by a longarmer), and I realized that a lot of the tops I had made from kits, I just had no emotional attachment to. I didn't have to put any thought into it, I just cut what was given to me and pieced as the instructions said. That's when I took a long hard look at my kits and realized that I'm just not really a kit person. I like the challenge of going through my stash and coming up with my own fabrics. I've started listing my remaining kits on eBay to rehome them to someone who really wants them.

    • @TLStitches
      @TLStitches 6 місяців тому +6

      I experienced something similar years ago, but not concerning kits. As a young mother 35 years ago, I started making quilts from scraps from years of garment sewing. I was having a blast! After a number of years I decided to join a quilt guild. I noticed many of the ladies there made quilts from a fabric line, rarely did you see a scrap quilt in the bunch. I started feeling like I needed to 'up my game' and should only be making bed size quilts made from all quilt shop fabric that was perfectly coordinated. It took a while before I realized I mostly had zero attachment to these quilts. At first I thought, well, that's a good thing, because it means I'm not being materialistic. Lol But then I noticed it wasn't that, it was because I was feeling more like I 'had to' do things a certain way or nobody would like them, so I was no longer enjoying the process itself and that's why there was no connection or attachment to the quilt.

    • @donnavamos8099
      @donnavamos8099 6 місяців тому +1

      @farciemacd and @TLStitches you both said it perfectly! No emotional attachment because with a kit, you really can’t put your own personal stamp on your work. It’s so much fun to “shop my stash” and see what I can put together. I may decide that I need to fill in a few blanks with a trip to the LQS, but my stash is always a great place to start. It warms my heart to use a loved piece of fabric! ❤

    Where do they all come from??
    Do they reproduce in the drawer/cupboard????
    I had a good look - thankfully they are all good versatile colors that work well with everything.
    I am definitely going to keep them!
    Fabric bundles... Oh yes - lots of them! Whenever I am visiting North America I am getting some (and I travelled a lot!)
    Much to my delight they cooperate with the above mentioned rolls - did I have that in mind when I bought them?
    No clue!
    Kits - I found an absolute darling one with bears! That one will stay, some others I am going to sell - I fell out of love with them.
    And all those Layer cakes....i guess they need another day to evaluate... 😳
    Thank you Karen for your great hints and help to dig, work and refind all those treasures.

    I'm all for precuts and kits when someone is starting out - when budgets are limited and the focus is on skill building. These days, I have a few FQ bundles and only one layer cake. I've got a handful of charm packs that don't take up much space and will get used in quick projects. This year I'll be using three panels I purchased without coordinating fabric. And that's it. Over time my yardage stash grew because I loved the artwork contributions I saw in the fabrics, and from that I learned I'm a modern quilt girl. I no longer buy precuts because they tend to be too 'themed' for what I need. The only exception I'd consider (and only FQ's) is Tim Holtz. Or Jason Yenter. And Seth Apter has my attention.

    I have rescued my new fabric pieces for quilts many times. When a Rings That Bind quilt project became too wasteful (of my fabric, batting, and time) I took what I had made apart and reused the fabric in other quilts. Very little ended up being wasted this way. Sometimes the classes I paid to learn a new method in did not go well (because the teacher did not do her research, or make the projects herself, before she advertised her classes). My class money wasn't wasted. I learned not to trust that teacher anymore; and, I don't sign up for any classes in that quilt shop anymore.

    I'm one of those quilters who occasionally buys precuts, but they have to speak to me. I can think they're all pretty, but unless an idea pops in my head that says "this will be perfect for a such & such" I don't buy it. I struggle with the price of fabric in general, and I can't visualize that stack of 10" squares equaling 3 yards,
    However, I do cut some yardage and my leftovers under a half yard or so down to precut sizes, because I do use 2.5, 5 and 10 inch squares the most. My 5 and 10s have their own plastic totes, but I discovered that my 2.5"s fit perfectly in a regular size Velveeta box. I decoupaged the lid with fabric crumbs and store all of my 2.5s on edge in it. It's a little wild, so it's easily seen when I'm searching for it.

    This is my year to get my sewing room cleaned. My aunt passed in 2017 and my uncle gave me half of her stash. I’ve made about 20 quilts out of it and this year I’m really paying attention to the declutter challenge. I’m tired of walking around boxes and some of her fabric choices are not mine. She was a brilliant quilter and I would have loved to sit with her and ask her about all of it. But alas I can not. She would buy kits and sew. My half of her stash filled three SUV loads without any room but the driver. I have broken a lot of her kits and taken fabrics for other uses. But the rubber made tubs need to get cleared out. 30min at a time.

      @donnavamos8099 6 місяців тому +1

      @BeckyHicks-ox8mw don’t be scared of sewing curves! My advice is to watch some UA-cam videos on sewing curves, and then practice on some scrap fabric. I made an oversized queen DWR for our daughter and son-in-law 9 years ago as a wedding gift. It was from a kit in batiks purchased through Fons and Porter. Took me 5 months of sewing also still every day after work while DH made supper.
      Remembering what my Mother had taught me, I put the ) curve on the bottom and the ( curve on the top. Pin, matching the corner points, and centres. Any more pins than that tend to get in the way. A pair of curved tweezers works well to bring the upper fabric out the fabric on the bottom. (Curved tweezers may have come with your sewing machine.) In place of curved tweezers, tape 2 bamboo skewers together about an inch up from the points. That will give you 2 points of contact to “persuade” the fabric edges to come together.
      I hope this helps and that it made sense. You CAN do this!! 🙌

    I have no kits. However I have a couple layer cakes and multiple jelly rolls fat quarter bundles and charm packs. I have deligated😅 space for them. My problem is deciding what fabrics go together when making a quilt. Buying these items take that problem away. I have watched your videos several times even down loaded the pages and printed them out. I struggle. It just doesn’t gel for me so I use these items to be able to make a quilt. I find quilt patterns and choose according to the colors and buying instructions displayed. I can’t “see” the quilt in different colors. I even cut up my stash into strips and squares those sizes as I know then they will get used. Each year I have enjoyed the changes I made thru your challenges. I only have 1 kit - from my current favorite designer. I don't usually buy kits, mostly due to the cost and the fact that there is always a fabric, or 2, in there that I don't like.
    However, I have a shelf full of precuts. I have 4 layer cakes (3 with a quilt pattern attached), and numerous jelly rolls and charm packs. WHY did I buy them as I like to prewash my fabrics and you can't do that with precuts and I don't want to combine washed with unwashed. I sometimes buy charm packs online just to see what the line of fabric actually looks like. The jelly rolls? - no explanation. A moment of weakness - the need to buy something? Even though I have had these for a while, I just started cutting a charm pack this week for a sew along. And yes, Karen, you are right!! They are not all the same size and some of them are not 5"! I am having to spend too much time making sure that the squares are the same size. I may try to use some of the jelly rolls or maybe trying selling them online, and I will not be buying any more precuts!

    I inherited a bunch of half started projects, went through them once and divided things I knew I would never finish into my stash... Finished four of them... And have decided to wait a few more months before going through them again. If I am looking for something to do one day, I might pull one out and make a different decision... And I'm okay with that right now.

    A Fat Qtr bundle of batiks from Tuesday Morming was made into masks in 2020, and a half Christmas jelly roll from Connecting Threads was just turned into a large throw top this past weekend.
    The precut I do prefer are fat qrtrs, and now, jellyrolls. What's the point of mini charms? I'd rather get a fat qtr or two that read-solid, cut them myself, and use them as eye resting spots on strip quilts, or corner stones for larger blocks. The only other thing would be hexie quilts, but, I have plenty of scraps for that. I don't need to buy anymore "scraps". Besides, if the charm and mini-charm quilt packs have one piece of each pattern, that won't help with my hexies, being 8 of the same fabric around a center (diamond shapes). I have enough scraps for that idea.😊

    When I decided to start quilting, I went a little crazy and bought a whole bunch of layer cakes (on sale)! So now my goal this year is to use them up! I'm just finishing a quilt of churndashes using one layer cake plus a few extra "slices" from another. It looks really great! Sort of scrappy but all coordinated. I plan to get through 2024 without buying any fabric--just use what I've got.

    I took out all the precuts I bought last year but didn't use. I did make plenty of blankets, I just didn't use them all. I was a little amazed at all I had bought. I decided to assign a quilt to each precut. I'm pretty excited. Some are pretty easy so I can fit them in when I need an easy project. It's nice to have a plan and will help me not buy fabric I don't need. I'm not cutting until I'm ready to focus on it. Wish me luck.

    I’ve also committed to use up scraps, which include an old jelly roll. I’m following a free online monthly class so I will learn new blocks that are jelly roll friendly and if I screw up, we’ll, it wasn’t my favourite fabric to begin with. It will end up being a donation quilt one day so I see it as a win win. I love m’y pre it’s and can’t seem to part with them , as many folks can’t . ❤

    As part of my 2024 declutter im looking for ways to use up my charm stash. I do have two go to patterns. Donna Jordan's Beads quilt which is a variation of Chandaler is a great pattern for charms. Another great one is 2 charm packs, a yard plus.... from Moda Fabrics. I got it in a kit and have since used it multiple times even with my own precuts.

I found that some designers make a pattern and some fabric manufactures have free patterns for the fabric line of my precuts. This has helped inspire me to use my stash of precuts and feel confident that I’ll feel good about the project result.

    To me, precuts are boring! Using scrap management methods (cutting favorite shapes and storing them sorted by size) gives me far more variety. I've only ever bought one jelly roll, and I've been unable to figure out what to do with it as most of the motifs are so large they don't fit on the strip--even though it is a double width one! (5"). I bought it on a trip to England back when fabrics actually designed in the UK were thin on the ground and I wanted a souvenir.

    I think I'm the strange one in this years decluttering group. When it comes to "fabric for quilts" I tend to do the reverse of most people. I see a pattern I like and then I buy the fabric for it. So, I have a pattern, fabric, and thread - basically everything but the batting - stored together in a plastic container. And because I like simple designs that mostly use squares or rectangles - I find that precuts work great for them and are easy to store - my biggest issue in my sewing room is the yards and yards and yards of impulse bought apparel fabric for shirts, tunics, and/or pjs for my husband and kid. The last time I went through it all - as it's mostly stored in 4 40 gallon water-tight Hisky storage bins from Home Depot - I had something like 200 yards total mostly in 4 to 5 yard pieces. The fabric stash took over the room... and is why the space hasn't been painted like it desperately needs to be in three years.

      Can you use some of those 4-5 yard pieces of fabric for quilt backings? In my opinion, backings don’t have to be 100% cotton especially if the quilt is to be used, abused, washed and loved until it falls apart! I’ve also included some of the ‘shiny’ fabrics (taffeta, moire, etc) into quilted items, after washing them to be sure of color fastness. Made a quilt over 20 years ago for my daughter from flannel that was originally intended for nightwear using Trip Around The World for the center which I tied using crochet cotton at each intersection with a wide border on which I hand quilted a very simple design. She still has it….

      @@catherinemarshall5845 I have plans to use a couple of the large pieces for projects for my daughter... I have three or four fleece pieces that will make excellent quilt backings. Of course, I'd have to get them away from the cats first. :)

    I'm no longer a fan of 2-1/2 inch strips. They are too narrow and it takes a lot of them to make a quilt. I wish fabric manufacturers would make 5- or 6-inch wide strips. There were some batik ones for a while and I loved them, but they disappeared.
