    This will help me write a Fingerprint comparison algorithm. thanks
    There are many fingerprint recognition algorithms available to the public but none of them categorizes the templates for faster 1:N comparison, which is the goal for my algorithm.

    Thank you so much. I have a test on this tomorrow and this might have just saved my bum from failing. My teacher forgot to post the notes on this to her website and I really needed help on this. So thank you again.

    I used Photoshop in this video to demonstrate how fingerprints are compared, but any software can be used. You could even open up two MS Word windows, import the images, and then use the drawing tools to place the points. The AFIS software that you see on TV helps find an unknown subject. It doesn't actually do the comparison for you. (Contrary to what happens in EVERY police drama on TV.)

    But how do you describe your comparison of the two prints without giving a unique identifier to each point? For example, know print points K1 and K2 can be compared to unknown print points U1 and U2, both being at the same rough angle off the axis of the loop's longest point, both demonstrating the same orientation of the minute type, and both pairs demonstrating the same number of ridges between the two points?
    Or is it not practice for professionals in this field to document their analysis in this level of detail?

    Digital print..may change with time and injury...How many points of difference can there be...between one taken on a clear healthy hand..and another..60 years later..
    How many points of accuracy can there be..to be valid..80%..or that means exclusion..or inconclusive?
    Thank you
    This analysis ..is valid also in art..where I will use it..

    I'm doing a science fair project with the testable question: Are fingerprints inherited? I'm going to compare the fingerprints of siblings, parent and offspring, and unrelated people. Do you guys have any tips and do you think this could be an interesting topic?

      Since identical twins do not have the same fingerprints, it would be interesting to see if there are any similarities like basic type (arch, whorl, or loop) among relatives. Good project!

    • @RayForensics
      @RayForensics  8 років тому +1

      It is an interesting project. Overall patterns tend to be inherited, but the minute details are always different. Identical twins have the highest correlation between patterns. Fraternal twins have the next highest correlation. Siblings next. Other relatives next. Finally, unrelated people have the lowest correlation between finger patterns.

    When you're marking them are you focusing on the white lines or the darkened lines.

    • @RayForensics
      @RayForensics  7 років тому

      You kind of have to look at both, but most of the time the darker lines are the ridges and the lighter lines are the furrows. Some of the Example videos talk more about looking for bifurcations and endings.

    I have two thumbprints here that I am trying to see if they are the same person, I am not having any luck with this, can you you please help me out here, can someone please show me what I should do. I have watched your videos, but, I am still, at a loss, not really getting any finished results or answers. It seems almost like a simple thing to accomplish but when you start really working on it your self it starts to turn into something I cannot get to the bottom of. Can I send the two thumbprints to you and you can use them as possibly as a demonstration of some sort, or an example for other people to learn from?

    • @RayForensics
      @RayForensics  7 років тому

      Absolutely! I'm just about to record another comparison video and I can demonstrate with yours if you want. Go ahead and send the images to me.
      Make sure that the images are at least 500 dpi (1000 dpi would be even better). JPGs are fine.

      Hello, The two thumbprints have been sent, they should be in your email.

    • @RayForensics
      @RayForensics  7 років тому

      Can you try again to get higher resolution images. These were only 72 dpi. Photoshop should give you the option of using a higher resolution if you're pulling the images from a pdf file. You can also zoom in super close and then use Ctrl-PrtScn to copy the screen image into your image software or even a Word doc.

    • @sunlight2605
      @sunlight2605 7 років тому

      Hello, Just wanted to let you know that I have used Photoshop to change the "dpi" settings on the two thumbprints and I am now working on sending them to your email. Thank you. The "dpi resolution settings are set at 1000. Please let me know if there is anything more I should do if there are any visual issues with the two thumbprints. Sending them now.

    How can you be certain there is an ID there when the left print looked like it had a delta and the other print did not?

    • @RayForensics
      @RayForensics  5 років тому +1

      The delta is the formation that looks like a Y in the lower left section of the right print. It's present but not as clear in the left.
      All of the features in one print are present in the other unless the edge of the print cuts off and the feature isn't present. So I think that you're asking, "How can you reach an ID when there is additional information that wasn't transferred from the skin?"
      Every fingerprint comparison has an edge where detail is no longer transferred. The same goes for all types of forensic evidence. DNA only looks at a couple dozen loci and not the entire genome, for example. In my view, the question then becomes, "When an examiner reaches an ID based on the limited information in a given comparison, how often are they incorrect?"
      Research and testing has shown that to be a very small number. Not zero, but very small, and even smaller when someone else double-checks their work.

    Hello, my question is if thumb impression is given to scanner and it is recorded in scanner memory. Now next time if I keep thumb upside down or exactly down by 180 degree will it recognize as my fingerprint only? and how photocopy of scanned fingerprint is matched with actual fingerprint?

    • @RayForensics
      @RayForensics  8 років тому +1

      If a trained expert is comparing the fingerprints, then they would know how to rotate the prints so that they can be compared side by side.
      If a scanner of AFIS system is comparing the prints, then it needs to be programmed to try comparing the fingerprints at any angle. Most systems only compare the fingerprints as they are scanned or rotated about 30 degrees in each direction.

    • @olusegunadewusi2845
      @olusegunadewusi2845 6 років тому

      The FP Operative will manually rotate the FP pattern and scan. The system will immediately match / identify the pattern as identical to the one in storage.

    If anyone could help me - how exactly do I tell where is the beggining od the ridge and where is the end?

    • @RayForensics
      @RayForensics  5 років тому

      Good question. You can really just view them all as ridge endings. A ridge that looks like it's beginning is also just ending from the other direction. (That sounds really philosophical.) In a similar way, while a bifurcation is when one ridge splits into two ridges, it can also be seen as when two ridges combine into one ridge.
