  • Today, I had a crack at pruning a Fig tree ‘Ficus carica’
    family: Moraceae
When it comes to pruning a fig tree
Step 1: You start by removing any dead, dying, damaged and diseased branches., plus any crossing branches can be removed.
Step 2: You can start to look at the size and shape to want.. In my case, I wanted as many branches as possible for maximum yield, however you can prune harder to fix your own requirements.. Eg, small size to make it easier for you to pick your fruit from a standing height, just make sure you prune to the newest bud.
Step 3: Once you’ve pruned off the unnecessary branches, you can now look at the shape.. you want a vase shape, with buds facing outwards from the tree and having the middle of the tree completely clear, so no branches growing in towards to centre of the tree..
Step 4: Once all the unnecessary branches are removed and you’ve the shape of the tree done, walk around the tree to double check your cuts are smooth, on a slight angle and not jagged.
For best results, fertilise by using an organic fruit fertiliser and apply to the soil underneath your fig in late winter/ early spring..
