  • To celebrate June on the Range, my pulp deep-dive this week dips a nervous toe into the snake-infested boots of the Western pulp magazine, from Dime Novels and spots in adventure stories, to the first dedicated title in 1919, and through to the eventual demise in the 1960s.
The magazine I'm looking at in particular is "Exciting Western" from the Thrilling Group, and the issue is from September 1948.

This was terrific, Gavin! I really enjoyed seeing all of the magazine covers. I had no idea that there were so many western pulps. I also enjoyed your deep dive into the individual issue. Well done, as usual!🤠🐴

"Hudson River Cowboy" -- I had to laugh, as I can see the Hudson River from my living-room window. But I can redeem myself by all of those long summer trips my family took; I think we hit every Western state and many National Parks, as well as the Pacific Northwest. So I can call up vivid images in my mind even now of the different landscapes.

Haha - all I have to call on is 2 weeks on Oklahoma, and having watched every episode of Northern Exposure :)

Great deep dive... I just read my first Max Brand this month and I've learned so much about this man. He is a fascinating study. Thanks for adding to that study.
Those covers are so good too. An era gone by for sure.

Thanks. If every one of those magazines was as good as the one I read, we are missing a huge canon of great work..

I just read my first “Jubal Cade” yesterday, and Edge turns up in it to help in a gunfight halfway through!

Max Brand was writing 20K words a day according to fellow writer Frank Gruber!

@genrebooks23, what it takes to output 2 million words a year! Truly unfathomable!
