Apart from mentioning the unsung concept artist of Thomas, Robert Gauld Galliers, I do admire the bit where Ringo Starr did photoshoots with the models! It's absolutely charming!
These videos are amazing. I remember watching Thomas the tank from the first seasons and I love seeing how they got created. Top quality videos from your channel mate. Pure class 👍
3:01 - "This was due to both of them never appearing in an episode together, and it stayed that way for the rest of the model series." Rusty to the Rescue: Am I a joke to you?
0:19 I can see some pile of coal spilling on the train model table since the last time on the Thomas and Friends episode, they had "Thomas, Percy and the Coal (Double Trouble)" Thomas and Friends season 2
Percy's Promise and Double Header were the only 2 episodes to not be cancelled forever, as they would be held back for Series 3, the latter of which was renamed Time for Trouble. It was pretty hypocritical of Britt to think The Missing Coach would be too confusing for young children to understand; Donald and Douglas swapping their tenders to confuse Fat Controller. The Diseasel had a similar premise; Bill and Ben having their nameplates remove to annoy and confuse Boco. So how did Britt think The Missing Coach would be too confusing for children, but not think The Diseasel would be too confusing? Hypocrite much? He's how Series 2 would've been closer to being perfect; -Remove Thomas, Percy and the Coal, The Runaway and Better Late Than Never and either write Barry the Rescue Engine in the book's place or hold the stories off for a later series. -Adapt Percy's Promise, The Missing Coach and Bulls Eyes. -Adapt 2 or 3 of the following stories to make up for the severe lack of Thomas-centred stories; Stop Thief, Triple Header, Thomas and the Important Visitor, Unhappy Landing and The Fat Controller's Engines. -To avoid having 5 Percy-centred episodes in a row, hold back Percy Takes the Plunge for Series 3 instead. -Either hold back Woolly Bear for Series 4 instead, or make Thomas and the Missing Christmas Tree a 10-20 minute special.
You know, more adaptions could have been done to fit in order if they could have had 28 episodes per series like Series 10 or even 30 at the most. I'd say there should have been 30 episodes per series then we could have had the the rejected stories adapted,
Thomas and Friends season two is one of my favorite seasons in the early classic era of the show it had a great variety of new characters and episodes including my favorites the Scottish Twins Donald and Douglas, Boco the Diesel and Daisy the Diesel railcar thanks for sharing this interesting video and look forward to seeing more the behind the scenes videos 👍❤️
Thomas and Friends is British because it was created in England and it resembles the United Kingdom trains because of the characters' red buffer panels and six-wheeled tenders and all the train cars' wheel quartets. The long flat cars, the Sodor Mail wagons and the express coaches are the only cars with eight wheels to match all the American train cars.
They are quality, love the nostalgia I feel watching this. Season 1 & 2 make you feel like you are watching a real life railway. The real life models can’t be beaten
I really do love Thomas & Friends when I was a little child! I used to have all of the VHS tapes of the show all the way up to the first of Season 7! Also, you did a great job with the documentary of the second series of the show; this season seems actually very interesting to me, especially when I saw nearly all of these episodes for the very first time! Oh, I even want to point out a few things you may have gotten wrong: 1. T&F Director, David Mitton stated in an interview just before he passed away in 2008 that the actual replacement episode for "The Missing Coach" was "Thomas, Percy, and the Coal." David also said that he was in full possession of the rush tapes of all the seasons he directed, so I don't know if someone else took over possession of the tapes after he passed away, but hopefully one day, we will see the day in which the Season 2 Rush tapes will be released to the public for our enjoyment like with Season 5! 2. Yes, the Elsbridge station was ONE of the last sets to be filmed during production, but NOT the last one. The last set they used for filming of Season 2 was the Eslbridge sheds where Percy crashed into the brakevan in "Percy's Predicament." I did not want everyone to come to various conclusions on which episode was filmed last minute, but I wanted to confirm this so every and/or anyone does not become confused.
The numbers on the engines make part of the series for little kids. The show began with a live-action model layout, it then transitioned to CGI animation and now it became a 2D toddler cartoon.
i personally think thomas and trevor was the replacement for hellu twins. y would britt commission a book from chris just to use half of daid book. thomas and trevor is seriously a stroyy that came out of nowhere
This was interesting, a lot to learn about the second season. It was sad that 'The Missing Coach' was cancelled as I thought it would be a proper introduction for Donald and Douglas. I always thought 'Percy Takes the Plunge' was the last minute episode to be filmed. But great job on making the video.
I have an idea of how to make S2 work, if episodes were swapped or still be in that very season: like Percy's Promise can stay in this season, but Bulls Eyes could be in the placement in between the third and fourth adaptations of Branch Line Engines. Unhappy Landing could be in the place of The Runaway (as we already have Breakfast, Ghost Train and Woolly Bear in the same season, but Thomas & Trevor and Missing Christmas Tree could still be a part of it). That way it could still be a perfect balance to break in-between Thomas and Percy's episodes and it won't be such a pickle for the crew. The Missing Coach I understand and I agree with Allcroft that there was very little action within the story, especially since it was both confusing and complicated as this takes place before D&D had their nameplates. I enjoy seeing the draft, but still.
I’ve always wondered how the other thomas seasons would have looked like had clearwater features never closed down. I’ve imagined the seasons would have looked more like season 2’s aesthetic.
I mean you have to remember apart from Robert Cardona. The crew pretty much stayed the same! So I think we pretty much saw what would have happened either way. Tbh is clearwater had stayed open. I don't think they would have done another season of Thomas. Mitton wanted to distance himself from the show and only because of TUGS failure did he have to return to escape bankruptcy
I honestly don’t think the Missing Coach would’ve been too confusing, it’s more confusing how the twins didn’t get a proper introduction to how they appeared on the railway. Plus they already had their names on them before the Fat Controller suggested they would have their names painted on them in the next episode. There were other episodes that were so out of place and the most confusing episode at the time was Percy Takes The Plunge, especially when he was talking to Bill and Ben who are yet to be introduced about an experience that hasn’t even happened yet. That confused me as a kid big time and Percy’s Promise was supposed to have been in season 2 and ended up being pushed into season 3 in a desperate attempt to save it. So, if you ask me, it seems like they didn’t really realise at the time or didn’t think we would be able to realise it because it is a bit messy when you rewatch it. Percy’s Promise should’ve either been after Percy and Harold or The Runaway and then that’s where Percy Takes the Plunge fits nicely. Also you will noticed at the start of Saved from Scarp that the build up is similar to what would have occurred in the Missing Coach episode. Before Edward comes in, you see James on the turntable and that was supposed to be him complaining. Saying that, they were lazy and used clips from previous episodes into new ones. For example, Henry’s driver and fireman in season one were once again shown and used in Percy and Harold’s race. Now that was something I didn’t notice as much as a child due to both engines being green, but when you play the two episodes it’s pretty obvious.
I did a TUGS one after this. Which is out now. As it's very important to the production of Thomas too. Not sure when Season 3' video will release. But hopefully before Christmas!
Something that I believe would have been very interesting was what if the crew made series 3 in 1988 instead of tugs? I believe it would be quite different from what we received!

Lovely video man! It was great to watch this with you. Cheers!
Thomas in the early seasons is a work of art. Feels like you’re watching trains on a real life railway that can speak.
Cheers my dude!

Season 2 feels so raw and unique to me
The train models are the best for me

I guess budget wasn't quite there with the show yet. Surprised they never did it later on though!
