Water wheel, gatro - a device that transforms the energy of the flow or fall of water into other useful forms of energy. It usually consists of a wooden or metal wheel with paddles, baffles or tanks around the perimeter that are moved by the force of the water. Water wheels were in common use from the 3rd century B.C.[1][2][3] until the 20th century and are now rarely used commercially. They were most often used to drive water mills, tools used in sawmills, paper mills, forges, smelting machines in the textile industry, crushing of output, etc.
At the end of the eighteenth century, John Smeaton described the physics of water wheels, which contributed to a significant improvement in their efficiency[4][5]. Waterwheels were eventually supplanted by smaller and more efficient turbines, an invention of Benoît Fourneyron, which could withstand a higher hydraulic thrust than conventionally sized waterwheels[5].
The main factor limiting the feasibility of constructing a water wheel is the availability of flowing water or the feasibility of constructing a canal or dam to impound water. Modern hydropower plants use a drive that uses the gravitational flow of water, analogous to a water wheel.
