I'm wondering if it might be Japanese Red Pine. Not like the stuff we're used to in the west. Very resistant to rot, used traditionally for bridge piles, with an oily texture. Having said that, I've just looked it up. It's in Hishino, in southern Japan. Haven't come across any info on the timber species, but found out this: Originally built about 250 years ago, but famous now mainly for three aspects: 1) that it's a rare triple-wheel system; 2) that it's made without nails or other metal fastenings; and 3)...that it gets completely rebuilt every five years! So I reckon our original thoughts were along the right lines!

これって例えば数百mのプール水路作って水汲み上げて循環させたら永久機関作れますよね
まあ水の補充は必要でしょうけど水流使ってポンプで井戸から組み上げれば井戸が枯れない限り動き続けるし少しの発電と畑の水も永遠確保出来る
天気に左右されにくく川と繋がってないから水害の影響も受けにくいし発展途上国では有効なんじゃないですか
水路の始点と終点にはため池があったほうが水流の力が増して安定しそう、、、あー考えだしたら止まらなくなってきた(笑)
中村哲先生のDVDと風をつかまえた少年の映画を見てここに来たのでより深く考えてしまいますね、、、この辺でやめておこう。
