I'm a Kanej shipper and read the Six of Crows duology, and I love AUs like this one. Seriously, you don't realise the point of AUs is to demonstrate how one can use editing to manipulate relationships which don't exist. It's not easy and most of my edits are AUs. ALSO Eric Heisserer has acknowledged that the Crows are noticeably aged up in the show, making the age gap between him and Alina irrelvant.
