I hope you won't take what I'm about to say as weakness, but watching this brings tears to my eyes and chokes me up. I was in the Army overseas when this incident took place. I listened to the Cubs games on the Armed Forces Radio Network or Short Wave Radio, whichever I could find the games on. I listened to this taking place, and I remember the announcer being very intense and graphic about the two protesters coming out onto the field and trying to burn the flag. I was livid! I was hoping to hear that players were beating the hell out of those two protesters. I was a medic in the Army, and I had seen way too many guys who had lost limbs, were burned beyond recognition,or were otherwise going to remember for life their sacrifices they had made protecting that flag and what it stood for. I wrote to Rick Monday to tell him just how much his actions meant to those soldiers and the veterans of every that we've fought in, as well as those who served in peacetime as well. On July 2, 1976, I got a letter at mail call in a Chicago Cubs envelope. It was a letter from Rick Monday saying how he felt about our flag and all it stood for.He thanked me for letting him know that it mattered. That letter is among my life's treasures in a plastic envelope where I keep my important papers in a strong box. I am eternally grateful to Rick Monday for his actions, and maybe that he got to the flag before Tommy LaSorda got to those two guys and beat the living hell out of both of them. Thanks to everybody who feels about the flag the same way we do. God Bless America.
DrShambano Thank you for your dedication, service and fidelity to the principles of liberty that the flag represents to patriots and defenders of the constitution. It is never weak to have the emotion behind that sacrifice wash over you.
DrShambano Weak? Not even a little bit.but very patriotic. Thank you for your service. I only regret that we don't have as many Americans who feel the same today. I was just a kid when that happened but I remember crying from the emotions of pride when Rick Monday scooped that flag up and took off with it. I will never ever forget that.

I briefly spent time with Rick in 1977 . When a young fan asked Rick for an autograph he kinda' thumbed through the book and asked the young man if he had his mom's autograph, do you have your dad's autograph, do you have your teachers autograph ? After he asked the questions he told the young man that he would sign his book but he thought that since his parents and teachers were more important than he was the young man should get their autographs. The boy said "yes sir I will"' Great guy with tremendous humility.
I have watched this Rick Monday video numerous times. I was a Marine stationed at MCB Quantico in April 1976. I have said it before Rick Monday; that day, you did your Corps, your Country, your family & yourself a great service that will never be forgotten. Rick, I remember you for another thing. Robbing Bake McBride of a home run in the Bottom of the ninth at dodger stadium.
I was a Phillies fan. To me, you will always be a robber and a patriot.
I was in my AIT at Fort Polk at that time. This is the first I heard of it. Great job Mr. Monday.
Lasorda was nowhere near saving that flag. Thank you Rick Monday!
A class act, Rick Monday!
I think Rick Monday made the most amazing save in baseball history. Rick Monday you did real good. Thank you for your service. Semper Fidelis Marine.
How do I forward this to Gwen Berry?
Rick Monday should be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom AND the Congressional Gold Medal as well.
I did not know this until today! Thank you Rick Monday!
AMEN Rick! Back then as a 13-year-old myself, you became an all-time favorite of mine! IMUA!!
I have seen this 20+ times and still tear up
I was watching that Sunday afternoon game on TV. I was very proud to be a Chicago Cubs fan that day. Rick Monday was one of the best players the Cubs had back then.
I wish we can have players like this today
Watched Rick Monday play for the Cubs throughout my youth. What a great steady ballplayer. Well done Rick.
America's Game. Played by True Americans (and a few others)! And Rick Monday is a Great American any day of the week!
I have always been a huge fan of Rick Monday because of this. What a great guy and what a wonderful thing that he did. I am so glad somebody had video of it.
Who in their right mind would dislike this....? Those 233 should move to a different country.
Wow. You're so fucking close, but yet so far
@@tomshea8382 Maybe you can say what you really mean.
@@MMPPunch Saying that those who object to displays of patriotism should "move to a different country" is a lot of un-American fucking bullshit. Hope this helps!
@@tomshea8382 Yes Tom, that Helps... my original statement still stands. Burning the American Flag is disrespectful, and those that chose to burn it do not deserve to reside in the U.S. Many do not understand the disrespect. That is my opinion, and I served my country like a few of us do in order to protect our freedom.
@@MMPPunch Maybe,
1) Maybe,
2)you're dead fucking wrong. Protest isn't illegal, nor has it ever been grounds for deportation
Of all the calls Vin Scully has called through the years and he has had so many great moments this to me is the #1 moment for me. To see that happen I lived in the Chicago area was in school when it happened don't even remember if WGN tv did a broadcast of the game then but I thought really 2 punks go on the field to burn a flag? And Monday comes out of nowhere to save it. As I recall mayor Daley wanted to put the flag on display but Rick Monday said no I want to keep this flag what a great moment and a great save
If you're gonna burn the flag don't do it around me- Robert James " Rick" Monday
He saved it from being burned he didn't avoid it. Did you watch the video
Thanks Rick!! I was a little kid then.... but had I known about it, I would have bought every pack of baseball cards I could find... until I got yours - and framed it in an American Flag.
God Bless you Rick - and the U.S.A. :)
Thank you mr Monday for saving the American flag🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🌹❤️👍
I watch this every so often. Today, I opened it because of the MLB sellout to the CCP.
God bless Rick Monday and all patriots. We have to stand up for what is right, and renounce what is wrong.
Rick, if you see this, thanks from a Cubs fan who remembers this play. For all my years of watching the North Side team, this was its greatest moment.
