Johnny If u wanna eat different varieties of food u should go around Srilanka specially not stuck in south n southeast. The other thing is u go and eat where all the poor eats and complain about it won’t make sense. Try to spend little more money as a tourist than a poorest of poor in Srilanka(South +East)
Try to eat at BARITH "hotel" in Pottuvil. They have got amazing food. located in this street you filmed this video but you have to go little further north, like 200 meters.
I'll try to find it, but BARITH isn't on google maps. I'll keep an eye out next time I drive there though.
Add to your content - that fruit with a dry taste is called "Laulu" in Sinhalese and check this link for more infor in Wiki - en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pouteria_campechiana
Furthermore biriyani will be expensive according to the location. The best so far is in Colombo Dehiwala to taste authentic Malay Biriyani is in Dehiwala, Hill Street, Malay Restaurant... try the Chicken Dum Biriyani...
There are more to try in Sri Lanka
"tho se" with saambaru and curry leaf sambal....
"Pittu" is a starch base steamed cake like... you need to try it with Beef "Ba Bath" you can only find in Colombo but in Muslim Restaurant like Pilawoos... There are more in Tamil Restaurants which are very good and fresh is in NuwaraEliya town for the Tamil food...
For the Authentic Sri Lankan Native Food you need have them in a Village... for this you have to prepare a tour guide to point out the locations....
@@JohnnyFD Yeah they aren't on google maps. 😀 let us know if you find it.
Not even 2 years ago and Johnny has matured so much, channel is vastly different and actually making a difference compared to this older stuff
That man said : In blood there are two cell types. Red and white. And that fruit good for white blood cells. That mean it hellps improve immunity ;)
The fruit is called "lawalu" Custord apple
@@tubemonster12
I have not found lawulu in the market 😮
Gosh They just find it just like that 😭
"Laulu" not is famous in sri lankan fruit market & it has grown time period.

The yellow color fruits we call Laulu ,its contents In the numerous countries where it is cultivated or sold, it is known by many vernacular names; canistel is common, as are variations on egg fruit and names referring to its yellow color. In the Philippines, it is called chesa, tiessa, or tiesa. In Sri Lanka, this fruit is known as laulu, lavulu, or lawalu.
Chicken Biryani is usually about Rs. 400 - 500. Since you got extra chicken perhaps they charged you more. Rs.600 is reasonable in Colombo
Arugam bay is predominantly Muslim area. Hoppers are more of a Sinhalese traditional food. So you want get that many hopper spots in eastern towns. Also, we don’t eat rice in the morning. Mainly bread with Sambol or lentils or potato curry or Rotti, pittu, string hoppers etc.

I can’t believe you’re able to live like this during covid. I thought only New Zealand was able to open up to this extent
We were locked down for more than 2 months, but we did it early and now get to be free. =D
Srilanka almost similar to New Zealand in cotroling covid 19 situation . Interesting fact is, there is over 20 millions of population which is more than 4 times higher than New Zealand .

Hey Johnny, Yeeey... a food tour finally :) Was gonna ask you to do one actually ;) I think the one which looks like cucumber is called "kakiri" in SL. Love your vlogs! Keep it up mate ^^
Yeah it called kakiri in Sri lanka.
Yellow fruit is canistel fruit or egg fruit... good for eye health, digestive system, immunity system... cheers 🍻 enjoy SriLanka 🇱🇰
Johnny, Sri Lankan’s do not boil the chicken. You are eating at all the wrong places. Chicken is generally cooked in its own juices, covered, with spice mixture. After 15 - 20 mins or so, it’s uncovered and cooked low and slow before adding coconut milk at the end.
Maybe I've just been unlucky at choosing restaurants, but 90% of the restaurants I've eaten at in Sri Lanka has cooked the chicken this way. The way you described would be delicious!
@@JohnnyFD Hi Johnny. Try some food at some local places where they cook authentic village style cooking.
Johnny FD That’s how my mom makes it 😁.
When British were in srilanka they had hotels with restaurants. Later people went to eat in the hotels. And opened their own restaurants, but called them hotel instead of restaurant. I guess it must be lost in translation.
It's so nice to see our country admired by you bro, thanks for sending this message to the world, enjoy and stay safe
Hey Johnny!
Try the “Lump Rice”, you may have to try it in Colombo. It’s a dish invented by the Dutch origin Sri Lankans. The Variety of SLn food is quite diverse. You may find
these dishes in Reputed restaurants. Next time try a Sri Lankan Buffet at a reputed hotel/ restaurant.
I've heard of this! Made by the Dutch Burghers. I've been looking for it in the South and East but haven't found it anywhere yet. I'll see if I can find some Lamprais when I go to Colombo.. =)
@@JohnnyFD Hay Jonny, for authentic Lump Rice 'Dutch Burgher Union' at Colombo 4 is the best place. Make sure to call them and order in advance.
@@JohnnyFD if you go to Colombo please try the dutch burgher union. It has amazing lampraise. It's fantastic
Johnny FD try it in the dutch burgher union cafe in colombo 114 reid avenue or Rasa bojun colombo (u cn find it in uber eats too)
He’s at it again🙌 This is the Johnny FD gang lets gooo!! 🔥🔥
laulu fruit
Canistels are rich in carotene, B group vitamins and essential minerals. It is a low fat fruit that provides high levels of protein and fibre and fair levels of ascorbic acid. Just like all the other yellow-orange fruits, canistel is a rich source of provitamin A carotenoids.
fun stuff! glad you enjoyed it, but no you did not get ripped off 😹 because the meal price includes a small piece of chicken but the other piece of chicken he served was a full leg with thigh which is the usual rate for a bbq chicken or whatever it is. For a good biriyani though I would recommend Big Bite Biriyani in Mount Lavinia. That spoon though, i feel ya lol i have the same problem too when traveling around sri lanka and I'm Sri Lankan! (gonna have so many haters probably) but I guess that's the whole part of the experience.
Thanks for the insights! I'll checkout Big Bite if I'm ever in Mt Lavinia!
Another entertaining video (especially the fruit section)! Is this a pre-covid video? I ask because I thought that Alyona left Sri Lanka a few weeks ago...
She just left a few days ago, we've been hanging out this whole time. =)
I don’t think you got ripped off, that large chicken piece alone might have cost around rs.300 give or take. But boy that is not what you call a biriyani 🤣 It looked like just yellow rice 😅 If you get a chance, visit “Hotel de Buhari” in Colombo.. They have the best Biriyani in Sri Lanka.. And it’s not that expensive either 😊
I look forward to trying the Biriyani at Hotel de Buhari. The best I've had so far was at Zam Zam Hotel in Weligama.
@@JohnnyFD You mean Buhari in Maradana, Colombo? That's worth trying indeed. bdw, The yellow fruit is called LAWALU. Also known as Canistel and egg fruit. Rich with vitamins. Good for skin, heart, etc.
Yep you should try them out!
yeah !!!
hotel de Buhari is the best ...
Hotel de buhari is the worst when it comes to briyani. You get authentic briyani in 1. Chanas Briyani wellawatte , royal briyani wellawatte and thalapakatti. Cholas in wellawatte serve pretty authentic briyani too. Buhari is just another yellow rice restaurant.
10:25 it is called Lavulu. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pouteria_campechiana
He is trying to say it is good to increase the white blood cells, which is good for fighting infections and curing injuries. Pretty knowledgeable.
I agree with your sentiment about local mom and pop restaurants needing lessons on how to present and serve food. I hope they learn soon. They kinda stuck in their old ways.
Thanks for promoting Sri Lanka.
1.That yellow fruit called "Lavuluppalam" in Tamil as your local friend says, "Lavulu" in Sinhalese and yellow sapote (canistel) in English
2. That polythene wrapper for lunch packet is commonly called as lunch sheets :) . Alternative natural wrappers are also used occasionally banana leaf, lotus leaf, they augments flavor and aroma .
Enjoy your stay and travel :)
Thanks for the info! I'm happy to help promote a great country.
I really really miss Sri Lankan food !! 😭😭Saw your Pasikuda vedio ! Glad you got your upgraded room ! Rock your time in the paradise island ✌️🌸
Hi Johnny, you are becoming a rice and curry connoisseur , like the sri lankan version of "The Chicken Connoisseur". For authentic rice and curry in Colombo, I recommend Nelum Kole restaurant in Borlasgamuwa (has better selection) or B-leaf in Boralasgmuwa. These are in suburban Colombo and they are not touristy at all. If you do not want to go far from the centre of colombo, try Upali's. The food is a bit more expensive and you may see a few tourist there, but it is still very authentic.
Thanks for the suggestions! I've added all three to my "want to go" on google maps.

Johnny FD,
That Yellow fruit is. *Pouteria campechiana* Local name is - *Laulu fruit*
if you need more information - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pouteria_campechiana#:~:text=In%20the%20numerous%20countries%20where,laulu%2C%20lavulu%2C%20or%20lawalu.
@9.01 this fruit is called Egg Fruit and locally called Laulu Fruit. Native to Sri Lanka, Philippines and Indonesia.
The food looks really good where are you in Sri Lanka ?
I'm on the East Coast in Arugam Bay.
Love your video ... Tks for promoting Srilanka .. hope you enjoyed your holiday👍
I did! Thank you!
That place on bucket list...never happen but love seeing it..awesome. love see the big waves.
Yellow fruit is lavu in singhalese. It's exactly like you said Johnny. I love it. It's not sour at all. Did not know until Palan told us it increases white blood cell count. Wow.
Actually in srilanka they call restaurant as hotel amd biriyani mean flavored rice chicken egg..and that guy who explain about white blood talking about himoglobing
Lawulu or canister and another name egg fruit contains vitamins "A ,B mostly.
Thank you for showing my country to the world. Love your videos. 👍
10:38 He is talking about white blood cells and red blood cells. He says that fruit is good for white blood cells which keeps you safe from infections.
The yellow fruit is called lawulu in sinhalies. It has a dark brown pit. I had one tree in my backyard.
at 9:14, that yellow fruit, we call it "lawulu". it's a delicious local fruit!❤ & it has medicinal values also !!❤
people dined in hotels for special occasions and dinning in hotels had it's own status and it was a big deal going into a hotel and dine, due to quality and standards,so the brand HOTEL had impact among smaller business individuals and start naming there restaurants adding the word hotel into it.
I can see the history behind that. It's like having brunch at the Marriott, or dinner at the Ritz Carlton. But those are actual hotels, usually 5 star establishments.
The yellow chalky sweet fruit is called La-olu. Which is endemic to the island
You can check out “Yamu” to get some good tips on where to eat. Some of the foods you have tried seems to be sub standard in terms of authenticity and quality. Good luck 🍀👍🏼
Thanks for the tips! Looks like great places on www.yamu.lk/

You need to try the Sri lankan, Black Pork dishes. also try the cadju curry. The Dutch sri lankan lampries. Sri lankan Crab, lingus, ( Sri lankan Sausage).
Very nice program anjoy dear...full around for sri lanka very beutiful country sri lanka my congratulations ..just try to go for katharagama site all so 😍👍
And, rice packets are suppose to be wrapped in banana leaf, btw. Not plastic.
There is better western foods in the tourist strips from Hikkaduwa to Tangalle. You were there. You know. But, they may have been closed due to the lockdown.
Hi Johnny hope you are having a nice time in Sri Lanka. You must try DHURIAN....One of the BEST fruits Xx
I don't need to try Durian fruit. I can smell it from where i'm sitting. 😂
@@JohnnyFD😂😂 but if you haven't tried it yet, then I insist you at least try once it's heaven-sent

Thanks bro Coming to my country and good explanation about our food. Thanks bro...
Sounds like drum music while making dinner.. awesome.
Thank you for coming to Sri Lanka....🙏god bless you both...🙏🙏
Thanks for being here 💙
At 18:00 dude put that food parcel on top of the plate. That's why the plate was provided. This way you dont have to worry if the plate is washed or not. Abd it's not plastic bag, its degradable product, ecofriendly.
I'm glad to hear the wraps are biodegradable!
Their are so many deferent varieties (food) in Sri Lanka. Deferent parts & communities of Sri Lanka cook deferently..
My dear friend if you want to try real srilankan food plz visit colombo where you have plenty of options including some super street food.
I'm looking forward to trying it!
@@JohnnyFD hopefully you should enjoy them!
Just had a Donner kebab from a Kurdish take out in England. Wish I was eating the chicken egg plant and onion salad. Muslim hotels Sri Lanka have their unique flavour. If want a change ,you could try the vegan dosai from the Tamil place or singhalese place for hoppers. Thank you so much
3.23 dude just giving you a death stare 😳 😜 by the way food looks Yummy ..👌take care FD !
In Srilanka restaurants are sometimes call hotels.
1 actually you didn't get ripped off it's kinda normal price but yeah may be 50 rupees more but it's not a lot!
2 the fruit you have been arguing with you friend should probably be cucumis melon ( kakiri) well got to give it to her it's from cucumber family!
3 the other fruit is lavulu which is good for immunity system!
4 the hotel 😂 it's basically means rice shop i guess!
Thanks for the insights! The Kakiri actually ended up tasting a bit like cucumber inside. =X
One point for me! 😁
Great great and thanks for the nice genuine views of my country. Just to let you know some of the food you ate is actually not authentic or I should say substandard. So always try local places.. ask locals for a good place. And even it’s sad to say it’s very difficult to find good restaurants in popular tourist towns. It’s always the same anywhere in the world. Again..great work 👍. From London
Thanks for the tips!
Enjoy ur time brother .love from sri lanka
It's been great so far! Thanks!
Always be careful when you eat at the street restaurants. Because sometimes the cutleries and plates are not properly washed... Make sure to double check the quality of the food and the cutlery and plates. Have a nice time
I've never been sick here from the food in over 6 months and I eat at these places everyday. =)
Great vlog, but actually the chickn isnt boiled separately in water first its boiled with the spices and water in the one go
Use the sri lanka 🇱🇰 flag to your video. You can get more video. Sri lanka youtube first. 😍
Thanks for the tip. I've added two Sri Lankan flags. Maybe i'll get double the views. =)
@@JohnnyFD ua-cam.com/video/Aq03xCRJiYQ/v-deo.html see video. She is one of the poplar youtuber in sri lanka. Make a food review video. Good luck and welcome to sri lanka 🙂
If you travel to down south you can easily find really tasty and authentic Sri Lankan foods.
Where in the South? I lived in Weligama for 3 months and also couldn't find really authentic Sri Lankan food.
Thanks For visit our country ❤️ Brother ❤️
Been watching your food videos this morning...now I'm hungry for some Indian type foods...yum
👣
Get some!
Great ! i feel the taste ! Love my country !
Yellow dry one of fruit we called lawulu.english word egg fruit
In srilanka most of the resturants are called hotels
That biriyani looked so good. That $3 something price wasn't that bad.
Trust me that is one of the worst Biriyani plates i've seen.. You can easily find far better biriyani for $2
thanks from coming to srilanka 🇱🇰 bro❤❤❤❤😍😍😍😍
schnitzel 😂👌 once in a while hey why not lol..looks fantastic...miss chiang mai markets though all my som tum and liver salads haha
There's actually a lot of schnitzel on the menu here at western places for some reason. The only problem is that it's always paper thin and mostly breading. Nothing than real Austrian or German Schnitzel.
Johnny FD lol yeah getting the schnitzel right is art 😍 I can’t do it man, tends to burn haha! Much love from Australia moite...probably gonna head to sri lanka soon as it seems to have easy peasy visa restrictions
You should try some sri lankan sweets
Brilliant video. The reason they are called hotels is due to colonial times. When the British arrived, they built large hotels, and they were generally the only places you could actually sit and dine, so over time the locals recreated smaller restaurants selling much tastier local food - but the name hotel stuck.
That makes sense! Great insights.
Lol like if you heard the owner say don’t take that leg piece with your hand. The waiter then used the buffet grip.
Biryani is not a traditional Sri Lankan dish, It came from south Indian when Muslims are migrated. And it's nutritional dense is very low. A traditional Sri Lankan rice & curry is highly nutritional, and cover huge varieties of vegetable and very little flesh in a single plate.
Biryani is part of Sri Lankan cuisine, whether you like it or not. The origins are from Central Asia, but a lot of countries have been influenced and have their own biryani now.
Be very careful when you visit restaurant in Nuwaraleya (K2 Restaurant with a picture of European chef in front) at the centre.....don't forget to ask for menu card with price mentioned on it and order from that menu only, don't go for something offered out of the menu, or else you will be ripped off....I had to pay Rs.300 for a Chapatti/flat bread that was not worth Rs.50. So be very careful don't get ripped off because you are tourist.
Dolphin Kottu is something you should try
Love Sri Lanka and the people, cant eat the food it’s so unhealthy diabetes is a big problem in Sri Lanka due to all those white carbs unbelievable how much rice they give you, there’s a really good food place on the left just after you drive across the bridge to pottuvil local buffet place always busy
Strings ( string hoppers) !!! Must !!
The yellow fruit call , egg fruits, itis 6 health benafits for body , please check
Also that fruit cal canistel fruits
He is saying it’s good for replenishing your white blood cells. I think we called it butter fruit when we lived in SL.
Butter fruit is Avocado. This is “lavulu” mate.
Hotel in India and Sri Lanka means restaurant..
Hi johnny u did u eat cashew nut curry.it's very.delicious.And healthy.
What about McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Burger King etc?
lol please man, this is SL. That stuff is expensive here
In the bigger towns there are McDonald's,pizza hut burger king and KFC but as Johnny says they are expensive and pay US prices
Not overchged thts normal price with extra 1/4 chicken

Hi Johnny.. that Buriyani is not worth for LKR 680/- with extra chicken. They have over charged.
You didnt get ripped off in the first place 🤣.. Prices were reasonable but there are better biriyani options here for the same price. But anyway you found it good so i guess its a win win.
Great stuff
Welcome to srilanka ❤️🤩😁✌️
Try string hoppers
