The best convention is the one that you can get to! Look for local, small cons, especially if they're not too far away from home since they'll be cheaper and a good way to figure out if you'd like larger cons. If you like smaller, local cons, try one of those. If you don't mind large con, consider Anthrocon, FWA, BLFC, or Texas Furry Fiesta and the like since you'll never run out of things to do! I've got my own list of favorites, but it really also depends on your budget and ability to go places. Keep in mind, many cons have hotel booking periods and you might not be able to get to some just by virtue of having nowhere to sleep.
