Flush Valve
Diagnostic
The toilet's flush valve assembly is most often the center of any leaking in the toilet's tank. It has moving parts that seal and drain, so as such is prone to be highly affected by corrosion or deterioration. The flush valve assembly consists of the Overflow Tube, Seat, Flapper Valve, and the Sponge Gasket. Each of these parts will develop problems over time, causing an internal leak that is hard to trace. Whenever the flush valve is going to be replaced, the sponge gasket and tank mounting bolts should also be replaced at that time.
To replace the flush valve the entire tank will have to be removed from the bowl of the toilet, exposing the sponge gasket and the nut holding the valve in place. It may be difficult to identify which of these parts are malfunctioning because any defect may be too small to see, for this very reason, whenever the flush valve, sponge gasket, or tank mounting bolts are worn-out, all of these items should be replaced at the same time.
Thank you for squeezing the sponge to demonstrate it's sponginess - I needed that! ;)
April 6th 2020. I could never imagine myself needing this video. Thanks a lot.

Lol I need right now
Omg!
Same here 😂adulthood
Why not..
I need this now lol
Finally a channel that details everything - first time looking in a toilet and I now know exactly what the problem is and what I need in order to fix it.
THANK YOU 🙌🏻
🎮🔥
I never thought in my life that I'll be using youtube to fix the house toilet but yeah, thanks it helped
OMG....this looks very professional....but so wrong on some points.....that black washer thats thicker on one side than the other?...is an overflow washer for a bathtub!
I'm 56...been a plumber since Jr. High....now a Master/ Journeyman...most so-called plumbers overlook a simple adjustment in the fill tube...(the flexible tube down in the overflow)...they will tear apart the whole thing and never get it to stop running.....this guy has no business making this video...this would take hours...(notice the edits)....and with plumbers charging about $100.00 an hour? I could have this toilet completely rebuilt ...(if necessary) in 45 mins....completely. There are more "Tricks to the trade" in plumbing than any other.
I recently replaced that black washer in my tub. Thanks for your comments.....
Averageskill poor

These 2 videos in the series helped me do my first toilet repair! Total cost for parts was $65 and hiring a plumber would have been at least $200+. Thank you!
Am I the only one that thinks all of this is unnecessary? My toilets rubber flapper is not sealing well. So instead of being able to replace just the the rubber flapper. I have to disassemble the tank and replace the whole valve assembly and related hardware!? Huge design fail!
I agree. Flush valves usually last as long as the toilet.
i like how this guy has PLENTY of room to access his toilet! Not so on mine....
May 4th 2020.Same could never imagine watching this very useful thanks
STOP !!! Before you do all this purchase a new FLAPPER - many times this is all you need to replace and it only takes a minute. A plumber once told me buy KORKEY brand flappers - I found this to be good advice.
Your into is 27 seconds. I'd strongly recommend shortening it.
JL Faverio there is over 1.5 million views i doubt your advice is needed
The best tutorial on the internet. I'm a 58 year-old female and had a great time replacing my flush valve thanks to this video!
Oh yes, and the pride of a job well done :-)
great video… i’m still getting a plumber✌🏾
If he screw up, the next video will be how to replace the carpet in the bathroom.
This would be me!
Follow the easy to follow steps....amaze myself!!
Thanks..
well explained and demonstrated. Did it in one go. thanks so much.
This video came out 8 years ago and Im still working on this issue...I watch the video every day like my dad says to do but I JUST. CANT. DO IT! #JUST KIDDING # PIECE OF CAKE BRO
@@TheMiwaro dumb joke
Exciter yeah I just wanted to make it seem like I COULDNT do it but then actually it turns out that I really CAN do it. So cray.
I used this kit and the replacement gasket on the bottom was too thick, holding the tank too high to get the nuts back on the bolts.
Yeah because I have all of those items!
@Mr23skeedo1
1. Fluidmaster.
2. Adjusting the height to the flush valve would affect the amount of water in the tank which in turn affects the flush. So if you have any issues with your flush then just adjust the float to allow the tank to fill with more water.
HomeownerSeries how to adjust the float in order to feel more water in the tank
Fill more water in the tank
thx! i finally fixed our home toilet flush with this guide
Didn't have a clue how to replace our flush valve, but from watching this video, I was able to replace it completely, and knew exactly what I was doing. Thank you so much for uploading this.
July 21 2020 : Came here to double check I didn't forget anything on mine before I turn on the water.
my toilet is in 1 piece. cant remove tank. what do i do to replace valve?
Look up the model and a tutorial for that model.
i just finished replacing mine after watching this first. good job!
Good job. very E z to understand. Nice video.
Very helpful. Thanks a lot for this video. 😊
You should take the silly warning off at the end.
Why would you care if someone was to copy an educational video that any one can find in a plumbers hand book any way?
That would be like me making a video of how to boil water, then threatening people to not copy the video.
@cuby1954 The flush valve could also be not sealing correctly. On our channel there is a diagnostic section playlist for toilet repairs. Take a look at it to find other problems.

I'm replacing the flush valve every year. the water here is just to hard in north texas.
with hard water will the flush valve clog/refuse to fill
Why did I come here thinking this video was about flushing your insides
Thank God for this video, or else I'd be trying to untwist the main valve without dismantling first for hours
The overflow tube & "theat" 1:40
carpet in the bathroom?
Should I replace my flushvalve with a korky/ fluidmaster one or an oem kohler flush valve. It's a kohler with a standard flapper not the piston one.
June 19 2021 I was in panic mode 😂😱 thanks saved me
Correction: At 2:28, that is NOT a flathead screwdriver. It is a slotted screwdriver.
I have an unusual question -- What is the free-floating 'screw' inside the inlet of a Kohler toilet fill valve for? It's immediately inside the bottom of the tube, where the water supply connects. It looks like a small auger and has a copper bushing on one end. I appears as though it spins as water flows past it, but it does not seem to serve any purpose. Any thoughts or ideas?
Who the fuck carpets a bathroom?
We have universal flush systems to easily install now. This vid is outdated.
When I grow up I hope I get to fix a toilet.
April 2021, my poop is stuck lmfaooo
You just saved me a plumbers fee! Thank you!
Thank you so much. Your video saved me a ton of time and money.
or just buy a new toilet
Thanks to the video it was a breeze
Which is best place to get all these parts?
It’s taught me nothing
My bathroom is flooded from toilet when I flush 5 times
Thank you for your time and advice. I appreciate it unlike some hecklers in the comments below. I apologize for the rude people.
thanks! this is really helpful. I haven't actually tried to fix my toilet, but now I understand lots more!
Why bouther to metion "buy them at the hardware store"?DID HE EVER SHOW HOW TO REPLACE IT?
Schinks hardware in Duquesne PA, 15120 will walk you through any and everything
They can't redesign these parts, making them out of aluminum (or composite) so they last for years ?
No. Aluminum will corrode and get stuck in place. They used to make them out of brass and those did last a long time but you're screwed when you need to remove one 70 years later. I prefer plastic because it doesn't break down.
Also to add; The part of the flush valve that the water fills into is actual ceramic built in to the toilet so given what I know, I can't replace the flush valve as there really isn't one. Just a flapper hooked to the flusher and a ceramic valve for water.
I have a very old toilet that requires excessive jiggling and a forceful upward jerk on the handle to prevent it from either 1) constantly running or 2) occasionally refilling after the water leaks
The flapper valve doesn't mate with any sort of gasket or seat inside the back of the toilet. Instead its sort of oniony shaped and the pointed end goes inside the valve while the wider end meets up with only ceramic. Could this be why it requires so much coaxing to prevent water waste? Thanks!
Please consider Wearing gloves
Thanks for the great video.
TWO QUESTIONS:
1. I like the replacement valve you used- what brand is it?
2. The original Valve on my toilet holds the flapper real close to the tank bottom. Replacement Flush Valves seem to elevate the flapper an extra inch or two above the bottom of the tank floor. Would this cause tank capacity problems for me? Do I need to get a valve that is low like my original one?
Thank you.
The brand is Fluidmaster.
2021 thank u SO MUCH
Why would you want to show how to build a toilet
Can you help me? My flash value is sticking do I still have to replace it or can I clean it?
Nostalgia when I was a kid
Excellent
ya
Thx
HomeownerSeries >>
Thank you very much.
Totally and completely helpful.

Wrong video, and yes it's 8 years later
THANXXXX ☺☺☺
In your list of needed tools, did you forget the extra large wrench for the large, plastic, flush valve lock nut ?
Or are we only supposed to hand tighten that ?
You need a wrench for that.
