Everyone is telling me to look into leadership or something that will allow me to "climb the ladder" and I'm just like naw. I prefer the classroom, it's my passion and where I enjoy being. Moreover, consider the economics of it. $1 usd has a lower purchasing power today than it did 30 and 50 years ago. @@Jasminemarie94 facts! preach!! and something else to keep in mind is we dont know the perks of working there. it's not always about the money, but the connections. my brother works at an average job car shop and doesnt make much BUT.... by working there he has access to all of the car supplies/parts etc he needs. never has to pay for repairs, etc etc. he makes good money on the side because of that and they pay for his school.

I think part of the issue with people today, and my generation in specific is that we ourselves are struggling to be home owners and car owners and make something ourselves in order to sustain ourselves and our families. My personal experience, I want to continue to strive for more not because i want to be rich, but because right now, i can't own a home and i'm barely making my car payments, and i know that with what i make right now, in this economy, there is no way that i will be able to raise a family. So when we see situations like this, we put ourselves in his shoes and feel like there is no way that he could be content with that. But good for him for being able to own a home and raise his family and have a job he enjoys. Not everyone has the same journey.
Only commenting on two points...one of the hosts remarked that his employer should have offered him advancement, etc.(paraphrased). How do we know that they (employer) didn't. Some people like the dependability of knowing what is expected of them. That is their comfort range. Many years ago, while in college I worked in a restaurant and this was the case with an older worker. She loved her job and didn't want to upset her life. She came and went each day knowing that she did the job and didn't have to worry about tomorrow. She rejected advancement because that messed with her contentment. (her comfort zone) For every one person that hasn't been offered advancement, there are hundreds, thousands, everyday that are afforded that opportunity in small and large companies. The problem I have with this show is that there should be more diverse opinions (if they're going to tackle social and political issues) in the mix. Its too much "group think" and VERY one-sided. This is the reason that I have stopped "regular" viewing (youtube) and only catch an occasional clip.
People don't do their research. This man works in a wealthy neighborhood and has a excellent reputation with customers. He probably rings in well over 50k a year from his salary and tips. He started off cleaning at the shop then he worked on cars. He has aching back sometimes but He loves what he does;been offered different positions(that pay more) was even offered a position as co- owner but said no. He owns his house, goes on vacation and cruises and pays his bills and gets off work and able to spend time with the family. I think this is sad. A dish washing job can only be so hard and he must have perfected that craft a long time ago. I do not admire people who do not want more for themselves and who do not want to grow and be challenged in every aspect of their lives. My mom was a branch manager for years and years, she owned her own business for a while, but after my dad died (they werent married when he passed) my mom decided she wanted more time to spend with us and our kids so she closed her store, went back to the bank, asked her why shes just a teller, she told me, ive been the big boss before and I don't want the stress, I just want something to help pay bills and give me time with my family.

Not disputing that he is best fitted doing the job he enjoys. The main concern is He SHOULD NOT be making minimum wage after 50 years of dedicated commitment to someone else's success. And don't talk about him being content with the money he makes, because if that was the case he wouldn't be walking 90 minutes to get to work. Either he would have bought a car or moved house. Also if he was making enough money, he and his family could have eventually opened up their own restaurant, after all it is his passion. If the owner truly saw his value, they would offer him longevity pay and seniority. Because of him this business is saving thousands in such costs: employee turnover, theft, retraining and job know-how. Moreover, consider the economics of it. $1 usd has a lower purchasing power today than it did 30 and 50 years ago. He's getting the same pay, and having a lower standard of living because he can buy less things since prices always go up. Poor man probably could not even afford to put his child through university. This is a clear case of a hard working man being taken advantage of.

Wadges are important too however.... it costs to live, so a living wadge is important. Groceries, utilities, home repairs etc all cost. Home ownership is extremely costly when your home it getting older, not to mention general maintenance.

He works in a WEALTHY neighborhood and has an excellent rep. That means beaucoup money sweetie. Not to mention Chicago cost of living and homes were WAY lower than they are now 50 years ago. It's entirely possible to have bought on a waitstaff salary back then.

@@Jasminemarie94 facts! preach!! and something else to keep in mind is we dont know the perks of working there. it's not always about the money, but the connections. my brother works at an average job car shop and doesnt make much BUT.... by working there he has access to all of the car supplies/parts etc he needs. never has to pay for repairs, etc etc. he makes good money on the side because of that and they pay for his school.

If the man is happy let him be. I promise you this man knew and still knows how to manage his finances along with his wife and could stop working today if he wanted to. I think part of the issue with people today, and my generation in specific is that we ourselves are struggling to be home owners and car owners and make something ourselves in order to sustain ourselves and our families. My personal experience, I want to continue to strive for more not because i want to be rich, but because right now, i can't own a home and i'm barely making my car payments, and i know that with what i make right now, in this economy, there is no way that i will be able to raise a family. So when we see situations like this, we put ourselves in his shoes and feel like there is no way that he could be content with that. But good for him for being able to own a home and raise his family and have a job he enjoys. Not everyone has the same journey.
Only commenting on two points...one of the hosts remarked that his employer should have offered him advancement, etc.(paraphrased). How do we know that they (employer) didn't. Some people like the dependability of knowing what is expected of them. That is their comfort range. Many years ago, while in college I worked in a restaurant and this was the case with an older worker. She loved her job and didn't want to upset her life. She came and went each day knowing that she did the job and didn't have to worry about tomorrow. She rejected advancement because that messed with her contentment. (her comfort zone)
For every one person that hasn't been offered advancement, there are hundreds, thousands, everyday that are afforded that opportunity in small and large companies. The problem I have with this show is that there should be more diverse opinions (if they're going to tackle social and political issues) in the mix. Its too much "group think" and VERY one-sided. This is the reason that I have stopped "regular" viewing (youtube) and only catch an occasional clip.

I get the whole "he should be paid more" but I think being content and being compliant are two different things. If he loves what he does and is happy with what he does then leave him alone. What do you mean "someone help him...he should want better for himself" He loves what he does. My dad is and has worked as a mechanic for 45 years. He started off cleaning at the shop then he worked on cars. He has aching back sometimes but He loves what he does;been offered different positions(that pay more) was even offered a position as co- owner but said no. He makes as much money as He needs to support his family and He still does and buys what He wants. He owns his house, goes on vacation and cruises and pays his bills and gets off work and able to spend time with the family. People have asked him about it before and he said he wouldn't have it any other way.

I think this is sad. A dish washing job can only be so hard and he must have perfected that craft a long time ago.
