The theme is called Arena and was composed by Murray Munro. It was used for football shows on the pre-merger BSB Sports Channel between March 1990 - April 1991 and on the post-merger Sky Sports channel from April 1991 up to just before the start of the Premier League in August 1992.
I always remember the Sports channel. BSB’s alternative to Sky Sports. I remember watching the Everton v Liverpool FA cup replay, the 4-4 game, on the Sports channel.
Looked far less polished in those days, but for the price you couldn't complain. Sky Sports like the previous BSB Sports Channel was initially free, then was only £5.99 per month when it did go to a pay channel, in 1993 IIRC
Notice they're still using the original ident jingle and Tommy Vance announcement - although the animation on the globe has already been altered to reflect more accurately the shape of the countries. Also, the opening bars of that snooker trail make me think it's the 1992 Sky One "Irresistible" campaign with Cathy Dennis' song...
