Our defence manufacturing has improved a lot lately because of the govt intervention.The NEGATIVE LIST made by our govt was a master stroke - these items could be easily manufactured at home & another is by DOING AWAY with middle men in defence deals.We are only exporting less sophisticated defence items at present but at least we have made a beginning.Some defence items made in India,like war ships,tanks, helicopters, armoured vehicles, artillary items, missiles etc are worth mentioning.We are FOCUSSING on this crucial sector is itself a GREAT ACHIEVEMENT.
This allows for Israel, Russia, France, the US, UK, S. Korea the opportunity to invest in the "made In India" system which means that these countries will still be involved tine the Indian Military Industrial Complex

I agree that as Indian we have can come a long way but I feel the defence industry in India is still budding and It will take its due course of time to mature and we have to learn from our mistakes And too much push at once in atma nibhar bharat may backfire .. suppose if we ban the import of certain defence equipment like hardcore defence mechanism such as fighter jets which we are procuring from france and europe ..or like nuclear powered submarines which we still are outsourcing will lead to devastated consequences as somewhere there are still emergency procurement of defence good by armed force as still there is a lack of trust in between parties..for example the full fleet of Dhruv helicopter were grounded because of technical glitches...so I think we still need to give time to learn and grow rather than just put pressure on armed forces to procure local ...that might lead to dissatisfaction among senior armed forces leadership

Such reading as I have done indicates that sine 2015 Premier Narendra Modi has spurred the development of twelve different missile systems for the three wings of India's defence forces. Each has had its own Indian inventions in software as well as up to 85% of the hardware as well. Due to Modi and Rajnath Singh the percentage of indigenisation has been going up gradually only in the last Nine years! Modi Sarkar has encouraged India's private sector to undertake R&D, given them incentives such as tax breaks and concessional supplies of minerals and metals. For the first time there is focus and intelligence in the way India is doing this vital job. Thanks Modi and Rajnath Singh.

And finally we need more foreign collaboration especially TOT is key areas like jet engines, navigation and stealth technology even if it's outdated we can slowly work our way out

India defense sector as well scientific reserch has assumed its gallop under PM Modi who only took strong and fast track initiatives and allocations in the budget with developing strength of neighboring countries and teeming threats including Turkey and low level of high joint defense and action by Islamic countries and long term projects with additional spending on defense. Congress did nothing or less much to put India on its foot keeping in view of emerging strategic challenges in world politics and geopolitics based on their natural resources.
