one thing Plugin Alliance did on their plugin , in comparison to the SSL Native one , is that the Channel Strip from Brainworx its 2 plugins form SSL Native, you get the saturation characteristics and the Channel Strip in just one plugin, and SSL Native sells those two options separately , also the TMT non linear approach of modeling I found it amazing, so just consider those two things, Brainworx its basically 2 plugins from SSL Native in one BX plugin.

Their lindel plug is nice, allows you to swap between characteristics withing the plug, maybe SSL will add 4k 9k etc
I think it's the way around. PA SSL G and E series are 2 separate BX plugins.
The SSL is using the same algorithm of the C200/300 digital consoles inspired by the 9K series consoles while the Brainworx emulates the 4K. Both sound great, thanks for the video.

VERY important point. The SSL is not emulating the 4000 at all. The Brainworx is specifically emulating the 4000.
4k never had decent pres incase anyone got suckered into buying a SSL2 I/O
Actually it is the 4000 G & E you choose which one by pressing the E button.

Hey Dave, great video. Question, are you setting the sound up on the SSL first, and then matching the settings on the other plugs? If so, if you got things sounding great using one of the others first, and then matched the settings with the SSL, it's possible that you may like those others better?? The plugin alliance one probably needs to use the channel feature as you said to maybe "overtake" the ssl. At any rate, I like your input on these things. Thanks again sir.
Hi Richie.....yes, I set up the Solid State first to sound the way I wanted and then set the other to the same settings which is not "completely" fair and I realize that. Like I said in the video if I were to just use the PA plugin and dial that one in I think I can get it sounding amazing as well. Also, keep in mind these two plugins are modelling two completely different analog desks so there is that variable as well.

They both sound amazing. However, the fact that you can throw the BX 4000E on every channel and use TMT to randomize all instances to create a slight variation from channel to channel is pinnacle. It creates this amazing depth to your mixes. Brainworx for the win.

Thanks for taking the time to make these videos. I’d just like to say - The plugin Alliance version is a great deal at 49. If you sign up for there email newsletter they email you deals. That’s how I got it. I’m a musician not a mixing engineer so it’s fine for me. I also have a good bit of other stuff so with this it covers a few mores bases for me like sound toys - slate Vms. Only think is I wish they had a way of just turning this into a view like softube so you could see it as a parameter eq.

I do get offers from plugin companies all the time. Most of them I pass on. If I do get NFR's then I disclose that in the video and that does not sway my opinion one bit.
I agree with you David the Solid State Logic has it in the bottom end and that is where almost all of us out here need as much help in the bottom end as we can get great job David

Thanks for the review but for the people who got doubts about these plugins how a copy can be better than the original coming from SSL? If you want a Ferrari will you buy the original or a copy?
All these plugins in this video are very good and sound a bit different. It's up to you to decide which you like better and if you feel the Solid State Logic plugins are better than go for it! I love the Solid State Logic stuff. I use them a lot in my productions.

I’m a relatively new subscriber-love your videos! This and your part 1 are fantastic and I found very fascinating! I recently bought bx console n and really do love in particular their TMT tech and the THX dial. I really did want to hear what happens if you pressed the “random all” button (such a cool time saver) to set all the instances to a different random tmt channel and see if that popped the 3D sound out compared to the solid state logic on your song. Either way, keep making great videos! Love it!

As pleasing as the SSL Native was on the ears, I'm slightly leaning toward the BX version.
Con:
May have to tweak the EQ to cut some of the initial harshness or add some warmth to help shape the overall vibe.
Pro:
up to '72' different modelled channels on an SSL desk is amazing. All other companies model '1' channel.
My verdict:
BX4000 is expensive for sure, but worth the wait for it to be on sale. Can't afford to let EQing be a setback.

I got a code from PA and can get the bx_console E at USD49+VAT during the next 24h or so. Would you say that at this price it's a no-brainer to get it? :) The SSL Native is EUR279 and requires physical iLok, so I'm not even looking at that one...

I have to amend my original post. I agree with Dave on this one. The SSL Native sounds better than the other options as I have both and my ears have changed and become more adept in proper listening.

I own both of these and the top end of the SSL Native sounds smoother and more expensive. I originally thought that the TMT would give me an analogue summing effect, but I ended up not actually liking it. I own a lot of PA plugins they are top notch but there is something magical about the SSL Native plugins, there is a clarity and punch and presence that just sounds expensive.
I agree. The SSL Native has a sound that is not quite in the other channel strips
I agree with you. I deal with Hip hop, Rap/Trap and Reggaeton and to my ears SSL plugins are a most have for those genres. To me the SSL Fusion are the best and then Plugin Alliance in my opinion.

This is wonderful. It actually shows your skill as a mixer because both mixes sound exceptional. What has always been amazing to me is how the first duende plugins actually achieved such a smooth top end. I use to tell myself that the frequency range is higher. However I have tried models of ssl plugs that went higher than 16 k and they didn’t sound as smooth. Limited research will show that the solid state version is really a port and not an emulation. What expert they are to achieve that sound in digital. Simply amazing.
The waves cla mix hub I welcome because the saturation is driven by the input and not a drive knob. Plus it lays out nicely on a certain control surface. Also with the waves when you adjust input the actual input meters register and shows the increase. It is just hard to resist the obvious though. All plug-in makers say they 100 percent accurately model a gear but never compare their plug-in against that gear live. The beauty of the ssl version is that it is a port and for some reason sounds better without added saturation knobs etc.

I wanted to say you should really state which plugin you made your original mix settings on. So, did you mix with the SSL to begin with and then duplicate the settings on the Brainworx or visa vesa? i’m happy to see your opinion. the SSL does sound great, but would be interested to see how a mix that begins on the Brainworx ends up comparing on settings duplicated on the SSL. You ever compare SSL to the Renaissance plug ins? They still make the renaissance ones right? That set out to be SSL and ended up kinda sounding better... from what I remember in 2006.

The SSL bus compressor seemed to be very similar to native instruments one by soft tube. I really like the ssl channel strip but I have the PA one and it might do until there’s a sale. To be Im honest though I’m thinking there’s better channel strips than the 4000e

I seem to notice you are driving the input of the SSL Native. Maybe 4-5db? However, you seem to have raised the “V-Gain” in the bx SSL (which is noise), and not the input. So the bx SSL is receiving a lower level input. But both plugins have the output turned down a bit, but seems like you refuced the Native a little more (prob compensating for increased input). Thanks for this video man. I just got the PA strip for $30 for Black Friday and it’s honestly amazing. I worked with ssl consoles for years and it’s very close. I will see if I can get the ssl brand one on a Christmas sale and real see how much better it is to my ears in person.

I, like many others, have received lots of vouchers and crazy discounts. I bought both the BX Console SSL 4000 E & G for less than a 100 bucks about 3 weeks ago when they were on sale !!! I have all the Channel Strip emulations you've mentioned in this video except for the UAD one and i must say that the BX ones sound so much better to my ears, in my opinion. I use them on every mix. Maybe i will try the UAD someday when i get the UAD stuff 😀 BRAINWORX FOR THE WIN!

I got this BX SSL for 29 bucks. Not sure what to think about its compressor, it needs 10db more input to work the same as Waves original SSL channel. Also not sure how accurate the original Waves SSL was, but MixHub and EV2 compressors still sound very similar with each other while this BX one does not work the same, it has different treshold and knee curves.

Listening on my iPhone speakers and you’re right. The Native has more depth to it than the Brainworx. But the difference is in the single digit % range. The differences aren’t great enough to have a CLEAR winner. You can get the same sounds out of either of them. I’d like to see you do a part 3 of this test with the new SSL J channel.

I'm also trying the SSL Native vs PA - I also find that the SSL sounds nicer at the top end, matching the EQ settings the PA sounds shriller. I also watched your other video with UAD & Waves. I wonder how you set up the EQing in the first place. I set up the SSL first and then matched the settings on the PA. I wonder what have happened if I'd first dialled in the PA - maybe I would have thought the SSL was a bit dull? However, I did back off the HMF gain and it still sounded a bit shrill. Interesting. Thanks for doing this.

Thanks again for another great comparison. If I listen on headphones, the SSL does have a smoother top end, but the BX is more 3D. It gives more of an impression of a live sound as opposed to a studio recording.

Replying to my own post :-) Listened on my studio monitors Focal Shape 65's today and I hear the same more 3D ness on those too. To my ears, the whole mix just comes more alive on the BX SSL. Maybe it's the TMT modelling that is opening it up.

Just got the BX one on sale. I have used the BX Townhouse and the SSL Native Drumstrip and happy with both, so the selling point here was the price. Basically whoever had the offer at the right time won. Few things though about the BX: I tend to use x3 and /3 settings a lot, and I am a bit of a gain person, the TMT is a good addition, ABCD comparison as well, and then there's a fader, not a knob! And, what's not a functionality issue, but a great feature is that you can collapse the BX to half size so I can have, say 8 channels on the screen, and comfortably mix them, by enlarging the one I am tweaking, which is a bit of a game changer!

WAVES gui too small in Studio ONE 5. BX and SSL have large gui necessitating a 4k monitor (or two). ONLY BX talks to Studio ONE to allow a concise parameter (non-gui) list to drop down when you hit expand/collapse on the INSERT list. I am really surprised SSL does not, considering it is a $1500 plugin set! OR am I missing a setting in SSL to allow it to have a parameter list show in Studio ONE 5 ???
Waves does have a resizable GUI if you have version 12 of their plugins.
What doesn't get mentioned (I don't think) is that the SSL programmed plugin is NOT from a 4000 console but their live console. The Brainworx one is from a 4000 console. Heartburn from a lot of people that have the Brainworx one is that the input gain knob adjustments aren't registered in the metering.

I only have the Waves version (I'm not a UADer). But I am certainly intrigued by the Plugin Alliance strip...especially those cool, unique features. But since I have a hybrid studio (and thus spend too much money on the external hardware gear than I should), I will need to wait for a good sale on the PA product before I can pull the trigger.
I am going to demo the PA unit soon. I like to look for unpublished side features of plug-ins and try them in unconventional ways (a la David Gnozzi). So I am eager to see if using the PA SSL-E for "V-Gain" only can make this plug-in a good saturator go-to, and how the standard features react to various drive levels.

Thanks for these. There's a flaw to how you've done the comparison though in that you'd have to do the actual mix with one plug-in and then match the rest, which places them at a disadvantage as you're not actually mixing with them. I suspect you mixed with the Solid State Logic one and then just matched the settings for the rest by numbers rather than ear.
yes, but its just a comparison to hear the differences. If you want to get down to the "neddy gritty" then I suggest that people go demo these yourself and mix with each of them and see which you like best. Thanks for watching

what was cool is that both plugins seemed to open up the mix. For me my ears went straight to the expanse of the guitars and I felt as though the BX was a bit more detailed and clear making it sound a smidge wider maybe, maybe bigger, more separate and less muddy. This via youtube so who knows. I think you nailed it saying that with a little bit of dialing you can prob get them to sound closer. I didn't feel as though the bottom was "missing" with the BX, just placed nicely because above it was so clear where the SSL Native seemed almost cloudy in comparison, but again...youtube and I could be way off...overall they both sound good. Plug-in boutique has a sale on the channel strip 2 and bus comp for $49. Also, I love both. BX always comes with the extra features and I love them for it and I agree with you. But idk it’s something about getting SSL channels direct from the source but u can’t go wrong with Brainworx or direct from SSL.
All the different SSL channel strips out there sound really good.
I really hope bx can implement some kind of control over TMT. It's a good idea, but the variation from channel to channel is WAY wider than what would happen on a well maintained desk, it should be controllable/scalable.

Great video - thanx!!! Recently I saw a video, where they tested the actual frequencies of pa/bx 4000e. And there is a shift between the numbers of the knobs for the frequencies and the messured (actual) frequencies. For example the highs: the knob was 5k Hz and messured was 7.5k Hz (it varies from the tmt channels). In the high mids: 2k was actual 2.4k. In the low mids: 500Hz was 940Hz. To compare the plugins will be unpossible if not messured physically. Can you tell me your thoughts about this phenomenon!!?? THANX!!!!
No idea and I was not aware of what you are claiming. If it is true then the plugins will def not sound the same. I tell people who get sooooo emotional about plugins is go try it for yourself and see which one they like. A good mixing engineer can use any of these plugins a still achieve a great mix.

I just paid 24.99 for the bx SSL. Plugin Alliance has some of the best deals. Also during valentines day SSL had a deal gor the channel strip and the bus compressor for 49.99 so I couldnt pass that up.

Plugin Alliance always has specials. Right now BX 4000E is $49! I paid $149 for it. You review is spot on. I own both of these plugins as well as the UA version. The SSL Channel strip doesn't produce any distortion and that is one reason it sounds cleaner. The BX offers the character and non linearities of the older consoles, including the compressor. The UA version is not in the same league. PA also has the Alpha mastering compressor $49. Anyone reading this, by them both. I've never seen them advertised this low.

I have all of these plugins. I was told from SSL that their plugins do not have console emulation. the Plugin Alliance does.
However, I agree that the SSL Plugins sonically have a better 3D sound and more warmth on bottom end and a nice sizzle on the highs, more than the Plugin Alliance.

Great job as always, David. I agree that the Solid State Logic is still the winner of the one's you've matched head to head. Here, the Solid State Logic has more depth of field and a remarkably smoother top end, the PA/Brainworx offering is harsh on the top in comparison. Maybe there would be more depth of field in the PA if you had hit the random button on the TMT so that all the channels had a different modeled channel. I have all of them reviewed except the UAD, and regardless of what you do the Solid State Logic just has a better sound field whether matching settings or trying to match sound or even just trying to bring out the best aspects of each. I have done all this on my own when trying to decide which is my goto.
I do have one that is better than the Solid State Logic and I'm mentioning this as a shoutout for people to try, I am not asking you to do yet another comparison. Acustica Audio has a product called Sand2 which is modeled on an SSL console. It has a better overall sound and incredibly more depth of field than the Solid State Logic, but it comes at a price. That price is that it is a CPU hog, that there is a delay in sound whenever you change a parameter, that before putting it across all your channels you will probably need to freeze tracks or render those tracks and commit. But because each incremental change on any parameter is a completely different sampled impulse response, and hence the delay when changing a parameter, the sound is to die for. This Sand2 channel strip also comes with separate plugins for each section of the channel strip so you get the channel strip plug, and also get separate compressors, separate EQs, and separate preamps. So you get a plugin suite with Sand2 as well as all other AA channel strips. I urge those wanting the best sound regardless of the overhead and workflow headaches to check out Acustica Audio's Sand2 for SSL emulation amongst their other superb offerings. The depth of field is astounding and the overall sound is nothing short of superb. Rant for AA over.
In the overall grand scheme of things, my own opinion is that the Solid State Logic Native Bundle as an annual rental simply can't be beat for the average person with the average audio production computer. The sound is quite good, the depth of field is very nice, and the price as a rental would take you over 8 years to buy them all and that excludes any update costs or additional plugs that might be added in the meantime. Solid State Logic for the win.
All Great points James and thank you for your thoughts. I did try to demo the Sand2 but I did not see a demo available so I did not bother with it. But like you said.....people should check that one out as well if they feel the need. All of these channel strips can be tweaked to sound great and it's all a matter of personal taste. There has traditionally been a runaround with demoing Acustica Audio plugins. The current Aquarius installer is needed to demo or install any of their plugs. First you need to navigate to Sand2 on AA's site, the trial page, then use the Aquarius installer under the Purchased tab to install the trial. It's weird. If you still want to try it, I'll provide a link to where you need to click a button to authorize the trial. You probably need to have an account, I don't remember:

You need to activate one of the preamps in order to get color in the EQ, otherwise it will be clean like a digital EQ.
It is my impression that the Brainworx sounds more spacious and clearer, not only brighter. Probably EQ can get the SSL to to that point, but it sound effortlessly on the bx.

The SSL Nuende channelstrip is not based on the 4000 E channelstrip. It is based on the SSL digital consoles channelstrip.
I know and said that these plugins are not based on the same model console so of course, they will sound a bit different.
I've found it really hard to move on from the Waves SSL to the Brainworx one hah , something happens to me in the low end since I'm the type of guy who tends to crank up those nobs! that could be the saturation characteristics of the plugin doing its thing, overall I hear something different so maybe I'll produce a track or mix it only using BW's :)

I have no intention to buying more SSL plugins. You can problem demo that for yourself
Plugin alliance has great plugins, great loyalty benefits for customers, and they provide great alternatives to things that are popular in the UAD and Waves ecosystem. I've been turned off from waves and their new upgrade models, so getting great alternatives from PA was nice. UAD resources were also a problem so I'm glad to have two options between SSL and PA for channel strips, that let me free up UAD for other plugins that are more unique to the UAD system.

Great Video! - I'm just deciding which SSL strip to get and this was a huge help, cheers.
To my ears using a pretty decent set up with analytical headphones the Native plugin sounds the most natural and has the most analogue character and depth and highs were a lot smoother than the BX plugin - so I'm gonna go native - just my two cents.
Just wanted to say that I wouldn't pay too much mind to any stupid or negative comments - you do an excellent and honest job in my opinion, you could do the perfect video and still get those kind of things - If I'm being honest, I thought you perhaps came across as being a bit too affected by it (which will probably just make em worse) and went on a bit too long at the start of the video, I kept wanting you to get on with the comparison a bit sooner - hope you don't mind me saying, all the best.

You forgot to mention, that Brainworx version has mix knob and highpass filter on the compressor and also switchable E/G style compression which I love, and also now recent version has analog button, so you can turn of the analog flavour If you want to, and also it has 2 types of eg you can click that eq type button where you can choose black or brown knob version

I understand the MixHub but the CPU hit only makes it an occasional plugin like any other. I think I have a fairly robust pc as most plugins run without issues. The BX SSL is great as well. You really cant go wrong with any of them
If the Native gets you 99% of the way to the real thing. The BX gets you 95%. The differences are so subtle.

SSL sounds more professional but the Brainworx has something interesting going for it, feels like the Waves from the other video but less cheap. I'd feel like I'd have to "open" up the SSL mix a bit by adding more and wider stereo effects, but the Brainworx already has that, especially in the mids.

Very glad I caught it on sale! Got it for $49 ( Alliance one). I love the layout and the V-gain feature but I don’t think it’s worth the full price, like you said. The one really good thing about alliance that I’ve seen is that they are always having sales on stuff like this.
