- 📜 History of the End of the Samurai: The Last Samurai - The chapter of history for the samurai is coming to a close. The Three Great Nobles of the restoration have fractured. Saigo Takamori returns to his land and vows not to get involved in politics but that in itself was a very strong political statement. And not a promise he could keep as dissident samurai and other factions flock to his military academy. One final battle will put an end to the last of the samurai. Or will it?

Not least in how to Japanese media, samurai may be their equivalent to cowboys in the US (and the Warring States period is as popular among their filmmakers as the Wild West in the US). And of course Samurai or Shogun is a popular element in Japanese restaurant names in the West.
Speaking of cowboys, the movie The Magnificent Seven is based on Akira Kurosawa's movie Seven Samurai.

Togo, in his time, was more famous and admired than Meiji. British people, in particular, hailed him as a modern day Lord Nelson. That is high praise indeed.
A lot of the colonial powers are starting to see Japan as part of the great powers club (something they have not yet extended to the USA at this point).
Germany is still publishing "yellow peril" tracts but especially after the japanese victory in the Russo-Japanese War, the other great powers are starting to see them as the natural power of the region.
During the Boxer Rebellion, a large contingent of the international expedition is made up of Japanese troops.
If I remember correctly, he accepted that he was equivocal to Nelson, but stated that Yi Sun Sin was still an even greater admiral

Imagine unironically being part of a dying aristocracy.
Something similar happened to the knights of Europe. In Germany many fell to banditry as a way to sustain their lifestyle, while other countries, such as Denmark, would employ them as civil servants.
The real dying aristocracy is the heian nobles. They have been around for much longer, but were relegated to court roles and culture during the shogunate. The samurai class is upstart warlords compared to them.
@@theposhdinosaur7276 The knightly class in Europe is a bit smaller, I think. At this point there is a lot of people in Japan who count themselves as samurai.

Americans-let’s make Japan a modern country to trade with
Japan in 1941- Attack America
America- who had that dum idea
America never had the intention of making Japan modern, they just wanted Japan to open its border for trade, without limitation, which was a negative thing for the economy of a non-industrial country like Japan.
America probably never predicted that Japan could develop itself, the Russian defeat at the Russo-Japanese war was a shock for western nations, because up untill that point Westerners believed that no non-european nation could develop enough to contest with western powers.
Japan kind of underwent a condensed form of what the west had slogged through- the internal fighting to unify into one state, the modernization, the phase where they colonize everything, then bam, 1945 and there’s a new state
Sometimes i think we butt into other countries business too much.
