The first four and a half minutes of this video discuss character ideas & character creation while the remainder touches on some story spoilers.
Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden in available now on D&D Beyond: dndbeyond.link/RIme
This conversation was part of a larger Todd Talks around Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden, where they also discussed Dark Secrets, Dangerous Magics & Disturbing Creatures ( ua-cam.com/video/bVB7dbVVdrY/v-deo.html ) and took a deep dive into the books design ( ua-cam.com/video/N0kDBdDWSzk/v-deo.html ).

Could you avoid giving such misleading titles? "Player Advice" sounds like something that is addressed to players, and yet, the video is filled with spoilers. At least give a spoiler warning at the beginning of the video, as well as in the title and description.

I really like the show but why have a video that is titled as being Player Advice that has a spoiler warning for the adventure so players shouldn't watch it?

I've got several characters who would be equipped for this sort of adventure...
...but I'm inclined to make a character who is completely unsuited for surviving in the frozen north, or a survival horror story.
I'm thinking a naïve Bard, who's spent their whole life living in the city of Waterdeep, and decides to become an adventurer to experience all the stories he's obsessed over when he was growing up...a Lore Bard, maybe, or an Eloquence Bard; somebody who is a talker or a storyteller, and doesn't really have any business surviving in the wild.
If he happens to get the "secret" that he's a Drizzt fanboy, well...that'd just be remarkably on-theme.
He goes to the Icewind Dale because that's where Drizzt started his grand adventures...and he believes it will be exciting & fun.
...and just watch everything devolve into horror & trauma.

I think Frost Maiden and the books to follow are setting us up for Forgotten Realms 2.0 and D&D6e, because the some of the alternate endings are RIDICULOUS and very cool at the same time.

I'm playing a Fathomless Warlock with a single level of Sea Sorcerer and the Midwinter Child secret...reflavored the tentacles as snowmen, changed a couple of the patron spells because the patron was Ice Spirits
    That's right, I'm playing Elsa.

Just helped my friend create a character for this: he's a lizardfolk artificer (armorer subclass) who is basically going to function like Iron Man. The poor guy is gonna be a newt creature who is coldblooded, so our lore thing is that him being KO'ed is just his armor breaching and him being exposed to the ambient cold of the environment, putting him into shock.

Ranger with Artic as favored terrain would be an ideal choice.
While that's my first choice I'd probably play a GOO Warlock/Open Hand or Four Elements Monk multiclass.

Only watching the first few minutes. But after watching Lovecraft Country, I was inspired to make a character that really leans into that Cronnenburg/Lovecraft style with a changeling deep one warlock. Current plan is the character didn't grow up as a changeling, but slowly became one through the process of delving into knowledge that they probably should have stayed away from. But hey, in for a penny, in for a pound.
Would probably need to run this by the dm first though.

If I play this camping I would probaly DM. But, if I had to make a character I would do a warlock (maybe fiend, because fire powers) that was selected as a humanoid sacrifice and made the pact to save their life.

I like how Icewind Dale nicely ties in some of the rules and systems from Saltmarsh re. undersea and shipboard adventures.
A very nicely done sandbox campaign.
DMs Guild contributors are going to go NUTS with this one.

Spoilers? Books you should look into if your players do the crazy shit they're talking about where you change the world forever
A second edition book, Netheril: Empire of Magic, and a 3.5 Book Forgotten Realms: Lost Empires of Faerun could help you out.

In almost every 5E adventure, there has been a mysterious black obelisk. For example, Storm King's Thunder opens in Nightstone, a town centered around a black obelisk of mysterious origin. There's one in the Whorlstone Tunnels in Out of the Abyss, one in the Tomb of the Nine in Tomb of Annihilation, etc. For the most part these have been easy to write off as just being part of the strange and mysterious ruins that are common in D&D, but their descriptions have been intentionally consistent so that they could all be connected to each other in the future.
This adventure has an actual resolution to that mystery.

ULTRA SPOILER IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT HOOT HOOT PUT IT ON MUTE
The players are given the opportunity to use an Obelisk in a fallen Netherse city to go back in time almost 2000 years to a time before the fall of Netheril. I truly hope that my players do this. Roleplaying a campaign where the players can try and stop Karsus from unleashing his spell to usurp the god of magic would be amazing.

I was looking forward to this season of AL; even had two character concepts fully fleshed out for the setting. Then WotC rolled out the new seasonality rules. Now I can't play either of them because of the new race, alignment, and class restrictions they've implemented. At this point I think I just won't participate in AL anymore. Good job WotC, thanks for killing the fun for me.
